Kalustyan's 5/19/2006

For ethnic chefs this place is a godsend. There are so many spice options it can give one a headache. Then there are the rice choices. Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to wander the packed aisles when you head here to shop. Sure come with a list (why not?) but don't be surprised if you double what you planned on spending. There are so many tempting goodies for fans of Indian cuisine. more

Kalustyans 5/11/2006

Kalustyan's is an Indian/International food market situated in the middle of "Curry Hill" in Gramercy Park. If you enjoy cooking and want to dabble in Indian cooking from any region, there is nothing you can't find in this shop. As the saying goes, if they don't have it, you don't need it. Along the narrow aisles, you will find a dizzying array of spices and accompaniments for the amateur, as well as the professional, chef. If you're not starting from scratch, but want to sample Indian cooking, that's not a problem wither. The store features a variety of curry and cooking sauces from numerous brands, both domestic and imported, ghee, curry leaves, and assorted Indian groceries. The one downside is the staff, who for the most part aren't too talkative or helpful in explaining some of the products they stock. In fact, their own website does a better job of doing that, but it skims over the amount of product they have. Thus, it's best to come prepared and know what you want. And if you like spicy: take a bag of the punjabi mix with you as you go. more

Unbelievable selection! 12/8/2005

Kalustyan's has one of the largest collection of unusual spices, legumes, exotic vegetables and other ingredients that I've ever seen in one store. I love to go in just to browse because I know I'll find something I've never tried. Although it's mainly focuses on Indian cuisine the store stocks a variety of ethnic ingredients. more

stuff you wont find elsewhere 11/16/2005

if you like creating an internation kitchen in the home this store in the 20s/lex is a must go destination. you really feel like youre walking through a bazaar in the middle east. they have spice and ingredients i guarantee you wont find in your local food emporium. the prices are really quite good too. you'd be nuts to use those mccormick spices when you can get the real deal here... more

the place to go for exotic foods 9/13/2005

i came back from a trip to turkey and had a craving for adana kebabs like you read about. and since i like to be adventurous in the kitchen i figured i'd give it a try myself. but i couldnt find any of the ingredients til someone steered me this way. their spice selection is better than you would find in any middle eastern bazaar. they have good cookiig supplies and even a cafe if you get worn out from shopping. if you are planning on doingn any type of cooking relating to the middle east this store is a must. more

Sweet taste of Asia 8/20/2005

Like wandering through the spice markets of Asia in New York City, Kalustyan's is a delight to shop at. The nuts, dried fruits, spices, etc are all top notch quality. The cashews are huge, and so very tasty! They carry products from the Middle East and even India! At the back you'll find good stainless steel kitchenware. more
