Editorial review from Citysearch 2/23/2014

RUDE RUDE RUDE RUDE RUDE service. Eat here only if you would like to be mistreated by the owner. We waited for 45 minutes (which we expected). When a booth in the back became available and we asked for it over the counter, the owner/waitress told us it was reserved for parties of five or more. She told us it ""would be a while"" if we did not want the counter next to the door.\r \r There were at least 7 groups of 2-3 waiting in the crowded foyer and not a five top on the list! We continued to wait and the rude owner/waitress acted completely put out by being forced to negotiate her way around the waiting groups. When she realized that it was ridiculous to keep an unused table open, she rudely told us she was going to seat us this time but that this was generally a reserved table. I pointed out that there were no five tops and she flew off the handle! She told us if we did not like it we could go down the street! Why she did not just seat us and be done with it I will never know but I have never ever had an dining experience like this. No vegan eggs are worth that.\r \r We proceeded to go to Wild Abandon on Belmont where there was minimal wait, it was cheaper, the staff was delightful and we had a wonderful brunch. \r \r Since I have told this story, people have come out of the wordwork to tell me how rude this woman (chunky blonde) who apparently owns Juniors has been to them including chastising them for asking for decaf.\r \r Go here only if you want to leave your dignity at the door. more

I have been to this place a few times 12/21/2011

I have been to this place a few times since it very close to the place I work.... I keep trying to give this place chance after chance, but every time I go here, the waitress,( a tallish thin lady with blondish, light brown hair) is a total and complete BITCH, its like, if you don't give a 5dollar tip for a 7 dollar take out order then all hell is going to break loose in this angry woman's life.(she obviously hates her job) BEWARE> I normally give 2 dollars for take out but DAY-UM! I have had a sit down breakfast here, just to be ignored and then scoffed at when I asked for a box. Do yourself a favor, unless you plan on waiting forever and getting less then low grade service, with an ATTITUDE, then skip this spot, its not worth it.. and its pretty pricey! more

Eggs! 10/16/2010

Best vegan eggs I've ever tasted. Loved the vintage atmosphere and the friendly service. It was a great place for my kids too. more

Good food, good prices, friendly service 6/8/2010

This is the breakfast place nearest where I live, so I've been to Junior's quite a lot over the last four years. In 2006-07 I had some issues with very slow service and somewhat small portion sizes, but as of the last two years the portion sizes have been large (but not overwhelming) and the service has been friendly and reasonably fast. They used to be cash only, so I was glad when they started accepting cards and I'm more than willing to pay 50 cents extra to not have to run down the block to the ATM (when they first started taking cards I was politely and apologetically informed about the fee many, many times, and really didn't care much about 50 cents!). Of course any restaurant you go to will have varying service depending on who is working at the time, but I've had a lot of good experiences at Junior's, and none of the bad ones described in other reviews. They've even let me eat there within only a few minutes of closing, when some other restaurants will turn you away, especially if you're eating alone. Great place! Pros: Great food, friendly service Cons: Occasional slowness more

Awful service 2/28/2010

Had a horrible experience at Junior's. After a great deal of drama trying to split the bill between two credit cards, being told rudely that there was a 50 cent charge per card, the e cards were then charged wrong - with little apology. When we were done getting payment settled and waked out of the restaurant, the waitress charged after us screaming that we hadn't tipped enough! It was my fault, I hadn't meant to snub her, but with all the receipts flying around I had done my math wrong and only tipped $2 when I should have tipped $6. But is that a big enough error to come out of the restaurant screaming at me in front of everyone I had been eating with and everyone who was waiting for a seat? I was so shocked I upped the tip and didn't say anything else - but I was very embarrassed and the more I think about it, the more appalled I am by her behavior. The service was hardly good enough to raise that kind of fit over $4 and if she did want to check with me and see if we had been unhappy with the service she should have quietly pulled me aside, not made a huge scene. I won't be going back to this restaurant. Pros: decent coffee Cons: terrible service, only so-so food more

Excellent! Fresh Food, Great Menu and Friendly Service. 2/9/2009

So nice to be served by people that obviously don't hate their job. I went in on a Sunday at 10am, the place was very busy but everyone was smiling and I was happy to wait. My food was perfectly prepared and tasty, I would highly recommend Junior's. Pros: Great Food, Friendly Service more

...think twice 12/2/2008

had an awful experience because who goes out to breakfast awake enough to realize they are cash and check only. after waiting forever and getting our hopes up on the elaborately delicious descriptions of food we were disappointed with our food, the service, and the bill. if you are a vegan it could be worth those things--i can really see that, but otherwise get a bagel sandwich at Kettleman's Bagelry just down the street. Pros: veggie choices in abundance Cons: everything else more

Avoid this one 10/30/2007

What a terrible experience! We watched someone wait 20 minutes just gor a greeting and water in the nearly empty cafe. Then another half an hour for overpriced eggs. When the waitress took a guy's food before he was finished (without asking), he tried several times to get her attention. She responded by embarassing him in front of us and the other group in the cafe. I couldn't believe how the waitress treated the guy!!! He wasn't even being rude or unreasonable, but she had taken his plate away while he was still eating! Then she attacked him and insulted him and I will NEVER go to Junior's again just from seeing that whole episode. That was some of the worst service I have ever seen in my life, she totally just ruined this couple's day- and she was clearly in the wrong. The food was decent, the decor is cute, but the attitude was terrible. Cross this one off of your list. Pros: Decor is cute in a 60s kind of way Cons: The ""service"" is horrific more

gorgeous-looking french toast 6/23/2007

Great food. The most beautiful presentation of french toast I've ever seen (fresh fruit french toast). Pleasant service. Go early to avoid the wait. Child-friendly (they have some kid books and toys to keep the little ones entertained at the table). Pros: tasty food, pleasant service, lots of choices on the menu, kid-friendly Cons: long wait on weekends after 10 more

Savory Breakfasts 4/25/2007

Let me say that I dig the decor in Juniors quite a bit. Gold is the main color here & the place gives a feel of kitsch & luxe at the same time. The waitstaff was direct and friendly and all quite lovely little hipsters that you could feel okay having your granny meet. I must admit I've been there twice & had the same dish. But it was so good the first time I couldn't help myself. I had a potato dish called the Spicy. I added an egg & a side of chicken apple sausage to go with it & experienced a kind of breakfast bliss I have not known in a while. The potatoes are cooked to a browned happiness and the home-made salsa was some of the best I've ever had from anywhere. Infact many breakfast themed places could take a lesson from Juniors on how salsa should taste. And when I cut up some of the sausage & put it on the spuds...Oh joy indeed! Tried the Spicy without the chix sausage & it was a bit more flat than the the few days prior, but good all the same. My dining partner liked her breakfast too but I forgot the name of it. What was interesting too was how darn good the toast was. I got the italian both times & the toast light & cooked perfectly with just the right amount of buttery goodness. When I went to Juniors this past Saturday the place was busy yet nothing was compromised & my other 3 dining companions finished theirs meals completely and all were very happy. I'll go back soon & maybe try something else. Pros: Food, service, funky decor Cons: can be spendy to get all your taste bud desires fufilled more

Exactly Right 2/26/2007

The portions are perfect for a HEALTHY person. Big even. Hipster service that isn't hipper than though, I thought that was nice. Excellent fresh food, a lovely neighborhood gem. Yay Juniors. more

Average at best. 2/17/2007

When someone asks for vegan food, it would be nice to NOT get butter on toast. Also, less grease and salt would be good. Maybe increase the mini sized portions a bit? more

Best service and great brunch (vegan options too) 12/16/2006

I love Juniors. It is comfortable and tasty. The staff is the best and most consistent in town. The new owner is one of the servers which I think adds the familial touch and keeps all of the service above par. Owners changed a year or two ago (i think) and I know they tried changing the menu a bit, only to go back to what the people loved. They have tasty vegan options for those who partake and they don't taste gross (vegan french toast on the list). The scrambles all around are awesome!! Pros: service, tasty breakfast, decor Cons: more options?, sometimes a wait, sometimes a little slow more

Great to go with kids 11/9/2006

Every time I go there there are kids dancing in the aisles. The servers are great at indulging (and dodging them!). The food is fantastic and the kids slurp it down. Fresh fresh juices, rather underpriced high-quality food, great service, fun as all get out. Bring the kids! Pros: Awesome food, service, atmosphere Cons: sometimes a little busy more

DINING PERFECTION!!!! Definately a 10++ 8/8/2006

Junior's Cafe is the best. The price is right, the people are amazing and the food is SO GOOD! I'm getting hungry just sitting here typing this! If you haven't gone you should definately treat yourself to a good time. The owners are incredible and have done fantastic with keeping Junior's a place you can always go to feel welcome. You can't even do Junior's justice in writing! Just Go Go Go and check it out for yourself and I know you'll feel the same!! Pros: Total thumbs up! Cons: What's not to like? more

Like Eating at your Friend's house 7/21/2006

The Junior's staff always welcomes me with open arms. The servers know what kind of tea I drink and even my name. These folks never fail to serve me and my friends warm toast and hot delicious eggs topped with fresh herbs and a side of organic fruit if we feel like it. The new menu shakes things up a little, but all of the old favorites remain. Besides, you can't miss with additions like polenta, poached eggs, braised greens and the fennel leek hash. I'll keep coming back again and again and so should you. Pros: Super friendly staff Cons: wait on weekends, but it's Portland more

Used to be the best in the city, now it's a joke. 7/12/2006

Junior's Cafe was bar none my favorite breakfast restaurant of all-time, for many years. The heaping plates of spuds, sizzling hot with tons of cheese and spinach, were a godsend on sleepy Sunday mornings. Cons: Small portions, Undercooked food, Understaffed more

Go for the spuds 6/7/2006

I love this place, I used to love it a lot more before I started making my own special spuds. The best thing here is probably the special spuds with the pork loin instead of bacon, or spuds with spinach, mushrooms, feta, and pork loin. The owners changed recently but the food hasn't. The service is friendly, the wait can take a while if you don't come at the right hours, but hey just ask to sit outside or smoke a cigarette or something, it's worth it. You will be full if you eat a plate of spuds. The waffles are great too, though not as filling as the spuds. The scrambles are all right, but a step below the spuds. If only this place served mimosas... Pros: spuds, waffle, scramble Cons: wait more
