Always a Pleasure 4/12/2006

I try to have at least one meal at John O'Groats whenever I'm in Los Angeles. I've scheduled lunch meetings there (ask for the semi-private area) and people will attend just because of the food! Paul will always be sure that everything is taken care of, and its also a good spot for celebrity sightings. more

A wee bit of Scotland on Pico Boulevard 3/22/2006

The eclectic, shabby genteel interior of John O'Groat's restaurant, where the only ambient lighting comes from dim wall sconces, might make you initially wary about what will come out of the kitchen. But then you notice the main room's tables are almost fully occupied, and business looks good at the huge, U-shaped counter in the room to the right and at the tables in the other room to the left, and you think maybe you didn't make a wrong choice for lunch after all. You didn't. The fish and chips are done just right, with a light batter on the fluffy Icelandic haddock. Apart from the fish and chips and potato cakes, most of the menu seems solidly American, with some Mexican seasoning. You can order off the breakfast menu for lunch, which, judging from the plump pancakes stacked on plates at nearby tables, many diners do. A trip to John O'Groat's, at 10516 W. Pico Blvd., a block from S. Beverly Glen Boulevard, also gives you a chance to browse the rich mosaic of non-chain specialty shops on Pico. more

Amazing lemon pancakes 1/14/2006

John O'Groats is another one of those places that marks the history of Los Angeles. They're an institution and they deserve another reminder to those of you who have just moved to Los Angeles or haven't been there in years, that they exist. They have the BEST lemon pancakes you'll ever find, along with several other versions to stimulate your taste buds. Paul (owner) runs around that place constantly always making sure the standards never slip and your meal is perfect. They're famous for their breakfast and lunch, but I think they may be doing dinners these days too, please call ahead to verify. This is another place that definitely has a line out the door, so be prepared. They may put your name on the list if you call ahead, worth giving it a try! more
