This was a last minute stop-over the weekend after exhaustive volleyball practice and parched me and the team were. Housed in the heart of Harvard square, JH's Brew House is the...

John Harvard's Brew House 4/24/2006

The John Harvad Brew House is no glass house. No stones will shatter its stained glass. It is a an underground beer hub into which many descend. But few are frozen. Here, they find relief from thirst, a sabattical from bordeom. The cavenous underground chasm -- more shadow than light, more stark than sentimental -- is often filled with families =- juice and extended -- slews of toursits and Harvard hangars-on. There is very little danger of here of running into people you know from any other walk of life. The John Dunseter House is the Hard Rock Cafe of Harvard Square. This is no oasis of romance nor a fete de court. It is first, last and only -- a great burger joint. That's all. And that's enough. more

John Harvard's has great beer-that is all you need to know 4/16/2006

This establishment has, in the past, won the accolade of Best Brewpub in America. The beers served include pale ale and stout. They also have seasonal beers that are served throughout the year. The food is American style and includes the usual burgers, pizza's, meatloaf, pot pie, etc. Most of these dishes are well executed and the chef will prepare vegetarian entrées. A dinner here will cost from ten to twenty a person. more

Tends to be very crowded 4/15/2006

Obviously it attracts a lot of Harvard students, but a lot of older people go there to eat, too. The food's ok, but it's not that great (pretty standard). Can't talk about the beer since I'm not much of a drinker, but from what I understand, the selection's pretty big. If you're willing to brave the crowds and possibly wait for a table, you might like it. more

  • The Scene
The destination of choice for area academics looking to unwind after a long day of classes. The large bar features plenty of seating for those stopping in for a quick pint, and the dining area offers dozens of tables, including a few large enough for student club meetings. With lots of dark wood, polished brass and dim lighting, patrons feel as if they're in a storied English pub, until they notice the stained-glass portrait of Jerry Garcia.

    The Draw
Plain and simple, this is a dependable place for food and drink, and not a place to see or be seen (unless you're a Harvard student). Of the dozen-plus beers made on the premises, expect a rotating selection of six to be available at any time. The kitchen's endless menu of eclectic dishes like grilled meat loaf and mustard chicken will make you re-think the definition of pub fare.
