Best Dive Bar to cool out 9/6/2009

You wll not find another place like this in midtown with these prices (maybe Rudy's 45 & 9th) thus it can get crowded very quickly. Unfortunately, lately the young crowd found out about this place and they crowd out the regular drinkers and tourists spending money while nursing their one beer for 2 -3 hours. Jimmy, the owner, manages a tight ship as in "" no politics or religion discussions aka arguments"" are allowed. He keeps watch over who is getting too drunk and asks them very politely to leave. Jimmy has a good sense of humor believe me. As far as the person below who said the owner was drunk and threw her out , I say B.S. Jimmy's Corner just wants respectable people to have a good relaxing time and he appreciates your business. Pros: diverse crowd, Jimmy & Swanee, cheap good drinks, jukebox Cons: Small, eurotrash female bartenders with attitude more

The best bar in NYC!!! 9/25/2008

On our recent trip to NYC, we dropped into Jimmy's Corner not having a clue what we had stumbled into. Being huge sports fans, my Father, brother and I were very familiar with who Jimmy Glenn was and was pleasantly surprised to find out that we had landed in his bar. The drinks were great and cheap compared to the ridiculous prices we had been paying at the other bars we dropped into. The service was the best and friendliest that we experienced on our entire trip to NYC. Mr. Glenn and his wife (whom we were told afterwards, nevers has her picture taken with anyone) Both took the time out of there day to snap a picture with us and just make a little small talk. Mrs. Glenn served up our drinks and Mr. Glenn sat and visited with us like we were long time friends. If you are in NYC you have to make it by this bar and have a drink or two and just check out the warm atmosphere and some of the coolest people in New York. The BEST bar by far!!! Pros: Good atmosphere, great drinks and cheap prices, best Jukebox around, A+ customer service Cons: not enough room to hold as many people that would like to be there, he needs even more space more

Interesting feel, interesting crowd 7/22/2008

It definitely wasn't what we were expecting when we read the reviews, but it is as stated a small little local bar, a definite break from the Times Square feel that Midtown usually offers. A very friendlys staff, very reasonable drink prices but a very unusual crowd. It could have just been the night we were in there, but the atmosphere was almost a little bit scary. more

Truly Unspoiled! 3/28/2008

Yeah, it's a tight fit but it's packed with good company and lots of fun! It's like a neighborhood bar hidden right here in crazy Times Square. If you're looking for a big comfy couch to sip your martini...this isn't the place for you! Drinks are cheap, folks are friendly and the jukebox is the best in NYC. A little tip: even though there are tons of boxing paraphernalia on the walls, don't sleep this is really a baseball bar at heart. more

Cheapest Drinks in NYC - hands down! 11/25/2007

Cheapest drinks in NYC. Great location, good conversation. more

Jimmy should be drawn and quartered 7/11/2007

Nothing has provoked me to write an on-line review until my friend was thrown out of Jimmy's Corner for no reason. When my friend first entered the bar (at the recommendation of a friend of mine), Jimmy said he had ""had too much,"" but my friend had never retorted and was perfectly lucid and affable - Jimmy never really specified what had set him off. It's too bad - the bar had cheap drinks and the vibe was compelling - but the best thing for this place would be a good conflagration. What a waste of decent Midtown space. Pros: Decent vibe, cheap drinks Cons: Owner is a waste of good oxygen more

Great sports bar. 6/29/2006

Jimmy's is the best, a nice pub to just chill out and get away from all those tourists. more

The owner's behavior is obnoxious 4/17/2006

I just attended a corporate gathering at this bar and the owner was quite intoxicated. He asked me to move my chair over so he could get to the bathroom. I moved but it wasn't good enough. So in return, the drunken owner threw me, a 110 lb girl out of the bar because he coudln't navigate through chairs. Don't ever go there....not cool....and you might get thrown out due to the dietary complications of the owner...the ""great trainer."" Whatever. more

Read about this place in the NYC travel guide 2/14/2006

My husband and I are living in Baltimore now and we wanted to find a place that reminds of our favorite place, Fell's Point. The NYC guide had this place as the #1 dive bar. We knew what that meant, that it has it's own character and is usually cheaper than other places. So we went there twice during our four day trip and we met some nice people. The place is small but if you are looking for something different and casual among all the hustle and bustle of NYC, this is a good place. Pros: service, inexpensive for NYC, good location Cons: space more

Great bar 11/17/2005

We go to New York every year, and our son found Jimmy's Corner 8 years ago, and every year we make it back. Jimmy Glenn is a true gentleman, and if you can get him to sit still long enough to tell his stories you are in for a treat, the staff is great, the drinks are cheap, and we always meet a lot of great people from all over the world. Not one complaint from anyone we met, see you next year Jimmy. more

best bar in manhattan. 4/4/2005

i visit nyc every year and this is by far the best bar i've been in. it's just off times sq but once inside you can just chill out. it's got a great jukebox, really friendly staff - jimmy's one of the nicest guys i've met. the beer is cold and cheap and although i may be one, there are hardly ever any tourists inside. it may get a little crowded sometimes, but it adds to the atmosphere. in my opinion, the best bar in manhattan (and i've been in quite a few!). can't wait 'til i'm back again. Pros: friendly, inexpensive more

Real bar for real people 5/6/2004

Friendly but sassy service, an owner who keeps it simple but never stale, no price gouging on drinks and a great jukebox consistently mentioned as one of NY's finest. If you're a poseur who'd rather sit on a sofa sipping rip-off girlie drinks, probably best to stay away. If you like a laid-back place that's a slice of the real NY amidst all the tourist traps surrounding it, enjoy! more

Best Bar in NYC 4/9/2003

By far my favorite place to drink in NYC. I guess it helps that I'm a huge boxing fan. But there's more to Jimmy's than just the virtual boxing Hall of Fame on the walls. A great jukebox with the best in blues, R&B and jazz from the last half century. A neighborhoody atmosphere that is one of the least pretentious in Manhattan. Also, by far the most reasonable drink prices for that touristy area of town. Jimmy's is a low-key, laid-back treasure. If you like boxing you may also run into any number of fighters or managers who come to visit Jimmy there. more

A Dive In The Best Sense 12/30/2002

If you want to go to a bar, not a taver, pub, or lounge, head straight for Jimmy's. This is a place to sit, drink, and talk. The bartender's are always attractive and usually have a foreign accent. Don't ask for any complicated cocktails. Pros: Cheap, Unpretentious, Honest more

Heck Yeah! 8/5/2002

If you're like me, and think getting a drink should involve neither a mortgage nor a makeover, getting a drink in Midtown can be dicey at best. Too much attitude, too much style. Jimmy's has neither attitude nor style. And that makes it wonderful. It's kinda weird, really, that this place exists. It's a neighborhood bar without a neighborhood. 'Dive' makes it sounds dirty or seedy or something, none of which it is. Jimmy's would be perfectly at home on a corner in Astoria or Boerum Hill. But it's not. It's just off Times Square. Like it got lost or something. Lucky for us... more

Great dive! 7/30/2002

A great place to grab a quick beer, although I usually end up staying for two or three! Great service, although the small bar can get crowded and very smoky (and I'm a smoker!) Pros: convenient, great character Cons: very smoky, crowded more

Huge disappointment 7/26/2002

After reading the reviews I was expecting something special - maybe they just didn't like my face ! The place was small, bar seating antisocial ad the drinks warmand not that cheap. I'm sure it ha it's good days but unfortunately I hit a bad one.... more

just don't move the stools 7/23/2002

great place anytime! total dive, but cheap and relaxed. the boxing decor is impressive. keep jimmy happy - don't move the bar stools from their particular spots! more

10 7/20/2002

2.30 am, late September 2001, chucking it down with rain, just flew in from LA and been ripped off by a pikey taxi driver in a van ($90 from JFK...Bas*£$d) stuck me head out of the doors of The Millenneum Broadway and saw the glow coming from Jimmy's, wandered over not expecting much. Did I get a shock! friendly bar staff, friendly patrons, great juke box (was I really in NYC!) Was humbled by the sight of Fire Men in dusty clothes having a quiet beer, and reflected on how the whole City must be feeling. Became my local, then again in December and will again in August when I fly over from the UK for a weeks holiday......will use a yellow cab this time!!! Pros: Good Atmosphere Cons: Not enough seats more
