The Jerry Lewis Telethon 9/4/2006

When is the world going to wake up? When I turned on the television this afternoon The Jerry Lewis Telethon had already raised 40 million dollars. I turned off the TV in disgust. I will admit as a child that I used watch the show to see the entertainment. That was before I found out that Mr. Lewis got paid for doing the show. I thought he did it out of the kindness of his heart. That’s the way he acts right? I read somewhere that he gets paid. I can’t find the link right now. In 2001, He told us if we didn’t want pity to stay in our house. http://www.cripcommentary.com/LewisVsDisabilityRights.html Well we don’t want pity and that’s what the telethon gets from people so that they will empty out their pockets. I am not Jerry’s kid. I was born to another dad I can show him my birth certificate. He gives people the image that we are like children. The last thing we need is pity and the stereotypes that Jerry puts on us. When my friend from Alabama was going to lose his in home services about three years ago, I contacted The Muscular Dystrophy Association and they would not help him. He has Muscular Dystrophy, (MD) but they were ready to let him go to a nursing home in another state. Jerry Lewis did not lift a finger for this young fellow, nor did The Christopher Reeves Foundation this young fellow had to fight his own battle and he won! He is still fighting the big battle that Jerry helped create and that is the “medical model.” What is the medical model you ask? It is the notion that people with disabilities need fixed, or need to stay in their homes because they are sick. People with Muscular Dystrophy can live long and active lives if society would help them and let them. A lot of people with MD have ventilators. A ventilator is NOT a death sentence. Society not supporting the people and their choices can be is the death sentence. Jerry is a very rude and obnoxious man he has NO respect for people with disabilities as you can read in appearance he made in Chicago last year just how rude he was, by going here. http://cbs2chicago.com/topstories/local_story_320225955.html Jerry, I would like you to do me a favor next year. That favor is stay in your house on Labor Day weekend, or at least just don’t do the telethon. You could have a picnic instead with your partners that you raise money for at The Muscular Dystrophy Association more
