I stopped in last weekend and WOW, it’s a great restaurant now. The original family has returned to ownership and completely refurbished the building and menu. Great food and atmosphere, highly recommend coming for dinner. more

The worst in Town 1/23/2011

On Friday we stopped to find that it was an expensive mistake. The entry way had a walmart candle burning to get rid of the old, musty and mold smell. We were seated in a booth with ripped cushions and what appeared to be sauce on the wall. The server was a rough talking odd person The soup would have tasted better if it was out of a can. The cheese sticks tasted like Arby's and the breadsticks from Fazoli's. The alfredo sauce had the consistency of jello. The Chicken parm had an odd taste. The baked spag was horrible. The bread was hard, over buttered. The total for 2 was $53. There were several odd characters moving from table to table - one seemed to be the mgr or owner, dressed in jeans and a sweet shirt. The restroom was alarming in need of a complete remodel. Never visit this restaurant. more

The WORST RESTAURANT ive ever been to. 11/6/2010

I am a huge fan of italian restaurants and i had fond memories of this restaurant as a very young child some 20 years ago. I went there today for dinner with my girlfriend. Upon entering the restaurant we noticed it smelled quite a bit musty/moldy. As a 25 year old man, i have eaten at quite a few hole in the wall restaurants/bars, so i wasnt too deterred initally. Upon sitting down at one of the booths i began to realize that something just wasnt right. Our waitress took our drink orders. I got a sprite and my lady ordered a virgin strawberry daiquiri. The daiquiri was way too sugary, but the sprite was o.k. We then ordered our meals. She got the chicken alfredo and i got the lasagna (both of which came highly recommended from our waitress.) Our salads came first, but the ""garlic knots"" were not what we were given. We were instead greeted by 2 soggy pieces of wet garlic toast. I dont know how or why a piece of white bread with butter and garlic powder could pass for fine dining, but thats what we were given. The salads were fine, but the bread tasted like it had been toasted in an oven that hadnt been cleaned in many years as there were noticable pieces of black charcoal like flakes sprinkled all over the bread. At this point she and i felt like we were beginning to get the screwed. These meals were not inexpensive. The lasanga was 14$ and the alfredo was 15$. Finally our entrees came out. At first glance we both felt like there was a possibility our visit was going to take a turn for the better. Unfortunately we spoke too soon. The lasanga was tough and NOT tasty AT ALL. The alfredo sauce was almost watery in texture and the chicken had a very VERY odd aftertaste, almost as if it were spoiled. Needless to say we both decided after a few bites that it was time to get the check and get out of there before we encountered any further unsettling incidents. We didnt complain because thats not the kind of people that we are. We paid the 36.00$ for the meal and left a 4$ tip. Our waitress was very nice and the other patrons who came in after us seemed to not have any problems. Maybe it was just a bad day for the kitchen staff, but i will NEVER EVER EVER come back to this place again. The smell alone that hits you upon entering this awesome looking little place will keep you from ever MAMBOing back to Italian Gardens. Take my advice, the fazolis down the block will probably serve you a better plate of lasanga. more

Very good Italian 7/23/2010

My family has been coming to this restaurant for a long time and we love it. They have lots of different options so I don't mind being brave (whereas at many restaurants I always order the same thing because it's easier and safer). I'm never disappointed. I love that it is locally owned and that the owner still cooks there and tries new things. They started making huge garlic bread knots and they are homemade and tasty (although I think a crescent roll dough might work a little better texture-wise). The servers are friendly and quick. The only thing I could comment negatively about would be some areas of the restaurant could use some repair (i.e. tile floors, bathroom paint). I'm sure that's much easier said than done, with how expensive and time-consuming it is to run a restaurant. Overall the atmosphere is cozy, fun and authentic. I have had many dishes and all of them were delicious. Pros: Homemade food, friendly atmosphere Cons: Some areas could use sprucing up more

overpriced underachiever 7/15/2006

The food was mediocre at best. it is uncertain how this restaurant received an 8.6 overall rating. We sampled Chicken Marsala, chicken proscuitto, Italian sausage and peppers, and pepperoni spaghetti.\r \r The chicken marsala was lackluster...fried as though it were chicken parmesan and lacked any discernable characteristics of the typical mushroom/white wine sauce expected from this dish. The egg noodles distracted from this even being considered an Italian dish. \r \r The chicken proscuitto was not all that great either. the red sauce was bland, and there was no real flavor to it (no herbs, no garlic, etc). the proscuitto was not salty enough...tasted like regular old Christmas ham.\r \r The peppers in the sausage/pepper dish were slightly overcooked....lacking flavor and crispness. Again, the red sauce was fairly bland with bland linguine. we had expected larger sausages in the dish as there were only a few small pieces to be found.\r \r The pepperoni spaghetti was also bland and lacked the necessary red sauce. it was baked with pepperoni and mozzarella cheese over spaghetti. Bland all the way around.\r \r For the price, we were not satisfied with the overall quality of the food. It took a long time to get the salads, and the food came out shortly after that. Service was okay, but left much to be desired. The decor reminded us of the little Italian diners we have been to in other cites. It was a little hot and must in the restaurant as well.\r \r We recommend Enrico's or Mama Carrolla's (both in Broad Ripple/north side of Indy). For the same price or a little more, the quality of food and service are significantly better.\r Pros: Drinks were kept full. Did not order alcohol, so i cannot speak to the value here. Cons: See review....too many to really list here. more

Best Little Italian Restarant in Indy 4/1/2006

Very exquisite food and service. I spent three years in Italy and Italian Gardens is the closest I have come to the same great food and atmosphere as in Italy. My youngest daughter, who was born in Italy, and I eat there monthly. We will always call Italian Gardens our second home. Pros: Pleasant Atmosphere, Good Music {Italian}, Excellent decore more
