Having recently moved into the neighborhood, my husband and I tried Iron Chef Sushi for our anniversary, hoping to find a new regular spot for sushi.\r
We were disappointed, though not entirely. Happy hour sushi rolls are incredibly inexpensive, and definitely a good value, as is the 'buy one get one free' house sake. \r
Unfortunately, it seemed like the oil used to fry the shrimp tempura and tempura flakes used in our rolls was burnt, as it had a very charred and bitter flavor. As other reviewers have mentioned, the rolls weren't very tight, which made them very hard to eat. The sauces and ingredients used, in general, were very good and fresh, and the black pearl roll in particular was (other than the burnt tempura flakes) delicious.\r
The service was...interesting. The single waitress/hostess/cashier was brusque and unfriendly to start with, though she brought everything in a timely manner and checked with us at the right times. The original plates we were given were smeared & greasy and the server glared at us when we requested clean ones. She miraculously became gregarious and chatty...right when it was time to pay the check. She did bring us a complimentary fried banana dessert to celebrate our anniversary, which was very cool.\r
In general...we will try other sushi restaurants in the area before returning, but haven't written Iron Chef Sushi off entirely yet - they'll get another chance before that. I hope the chef has changed his oil by then...
