Satisfying experience 3/29/2009

I found this thru Citysearch, and called to order- only to find out that they were closed on Sundays. But to my surprise, the owner/chef said that he would make an exception and prepare our meal. That in itself is a beautiful gesture. Since I didn't have a menu, he talked me thru my choices, and made sure that what I ordered was in fact what I wanted. 25 minutes later, my husband walked in with a beautiful variety of sushi and sashimi. The fish were perfectly cut, and melt in your mouth tender and the wasabi and ginger were bountiful and fresh. It's hands down the best Japanese restaurant in the neighborhood, and definitely gives those downtown restaurants a fierce competition. Our chef even called, right as we were sitting down to devour our wonderful meal, just to find out if everything was to our liking. I don't know about you- but I haven't experienced that very often here. They have made a patronage of us- we will definitely be back! Pros: fresh, authentic, close to home Cons: not yet! more

great place for sushi 2/23/2008

This is a small sushi place. the staff is great. the owner is the chef. He's a funny guy. If you go sit at the bar. sushi is fresh. I have never been disappointed here. I would say one of the best rolls is the ""sven roll"" its on the menu. try it Pros: the chef, sushi Cons: crowded on the weekends, no reservations more

A Great Place to Be Insulted and be served bad sushi. 2/11/2007

Sushi rice should never be served warm or hot with raw fish. When I went for sushi one night at this place, instead of admitting they didn't have any cold rice left, they quickly tried to whip up some sushi rice. This meant that I received my sushi warm and falling apart. Keep in mind sushi rice should be around 41 degrees when placed with fish to prevent bacterial growth on fish (as noted in many health standards). I reluctantly ate the sushi, but went home to find out that I should have not consumed the sushi. So if you think that's bad here's the other kicker that made me research the above..... Pros: Parking Cons: Service, Food Handling, Insults, Smug Remarks more

Great sushi and atmosphere. 11/12/2006

Ichiban has a traditional Japanese feeling, not like a lot of sushi places. Very good sushi, with skilled sushi chefs. They are flexible for special rolls, and have vegetarian options. Pros: More traditional Japanese ambience. more

Great Sushi Place! 4/24/2006

We just found this sushi restaurant, and decided that it will be our ""go to"" place in the future. The food was fresh, portions were generous, and the service was very prompt and friendly. The owners are fun! Pros: Close to home, Lots of parking more

Our favorite sushi place 8/7/2005

Out of the several places we eat sushi, this is by far our favorite. Fish is always fresh (the himachi is butter-like), his custom sauces are wonderful, and of the places we eat, he's the only one that offer baked himachi collar. Authentic sushi restaurant. More expensive than the conveyor belt places, but when we want the whole experience - we go. Pros: fresh, friendly, authentic Cons: expensive more

Ichiban is one of Portland's best sushi restaurants, and I've been to many of the top-rated ones on the list. The sushi is consistently very good. Their shrimp tempura is the best I've ever had. It's a quaint little restaurant and not all that easy to find. But definitely worth it. Oh, and this is one of the few real sushi restaurants (specifically excluding the conveyor belt types) that's kid friendly. They have a kids' menu, and kids also get their own special chopsticks. more

Great Sushi! 6/7/2004

We're sushi addicts and have been on a quest since we moved here. This place is consistently great and conveniently located. Unpretentious and good variety. The best yakitori we've found so far....Korean kimchee is also a plus! more

Try for Yourself 8/12/2002

This place is great... Young, the sushi chef, is quite a fun person and makes great sushi... the fish is ALWAYS very fresh... the best spot is at the sushi bar right in front of Young... I have never eaten anything there other than sushi so my opinion is a bit skewed but try it, you will most certainly enjoy it more
