Excellent Venue for Wedding Reception 6/6/2011

We looked at several halls for our wedding reception, but were having a hard time finding a location that would be ideal for our smaller guest list. A co-worker mentioned Hubbard Park Lodge--after touring, we decided to book it. We're so glad we did. We had about 90 guests at our reception--appetizers, sit-down dinner, Lake Front Brewery beer on tap and no fee to have the wedding cake cut. The food was superb--all of our guests raved about their duo of beef tenderloin and chicken--and all received a hot meal! The servers were pleasant and efficient. We highly recommend Hubbard Park Lodge for a small, intimate wedding reception! more

New Management Worth Noting 4/18/2010

I've read (from more than one website) negative reviews about Hubbard Park Lodge. However, all of the negative reviews I found were about the FORMER restaurant at this location. The new restaurant is run by the same owner(s) as Lakefront Brewery (a great restaurant), and that should speak for itself. I've now been to this restaurant twice, and both times have been very impressed by the service and the quality of food. My family goes out to breakfast every weekend - this is one of the best we've been to in a long time. Having an absolutely beautiful location is one thing - you might even expect that the luck of having good food and service in the same type of location is too much to ask for (it is for many places we've been to) - but that's not true here. This is a great place, with a relaxed atmosphere (the servers wear lumberjack shirts, for Pete's sake), fresh and well prepared food, good coffee, and excellent service! My wife is a very picky eater - even she was impressed, which says a lot. My hope is that others in the Milwaukee area finally recognize a good thing when they see it and patronize this place. I'd hate to have another good Milwaukee breakfast place go under just because it's not well known or on a busy street. Pros: Family friendly; low prices; very good food. more

New Owners & Family Friendly 1/24/2010

Just wanted to let everyone know that new ownership started 1/1/10 and is starting a traditional friday night fish fry with live polka music. Also their will be a Sunday Lumberjack brunch. All very family friendly. Weddings & special events will be run buy the same group that caters at the Lakefront Brewery. Pros: The best location in the Milwaukee Cons: Hard to find more

Under New Ownership!!!! 1/23/2010

I went for brunch and was delighted by the change in the place. Prices have dropped and food quality is great. I had their all you can eat brunch this morning and it was just fantastic....and $10!!!!! Pros: An experienced Restauranteur is at the helm!!! Cons: A checkered past more

WOW!! How Is This Place Still Open???? 12/2/2009

Let me start by saying that I have NEVER filled out a comment card, or written a review for any business before.....ever. As a person who has been dinning out for over 25 years, I have of course, received bad/poor service in the past, but never thought it was worth the trouble to complain. My experience with Hubbard Park Lodge was so bad, that I was inspired to create an account with citysearch just to rip them. I contacted the manager to see about having a very small wedding ceremony (total of 10 people) at the lodge on 12/31. The manager immediately seemed reluctant, I assumed this was due to the date. It should take about an hour and a half tops, and we would be gone by 4:30 p.m. He told me that he would email me the info on the lodge. Two days later, I still had not received any info, so I called back. He was ""suprised"" that I had not received the info, and offered to resend it. Nothing came. I called back, he offered to mail me the info... I said great. Six days later, I still had not received anything. I called back. At times, it would take several days for him to return any of my calls, to the point that it seemed he was avoiding me. He finally emailed the info to me, so I contacted him to finalize everything. I was quoted a price of $75.00 an hour/a minimum of three hours for the space (these are the weekday rates). Even though we would only need the place about an hour, we figured, that was fine...it's a beautiful place. The manager seemed less than pleased that I had accepted those terms....like darn, I haven't gotten rid of them yet. He then informed me that he had qouted the weekday rates from a different site. This lodge is actually $225.00 an hour/minimum of three hours during the week. We said fine. Now he really didn't seem happy. I pointed out the fact to him that he seemed rather combative to the whole thing, and asked him what his issue was. I basically got a ""why, whatever do you mean"" response. I reminded him that this would be very easy money for him, all he had to do was unlock the doors, and turn on the lights for us. Since there would be no food, or drinks, there really would no clean up either. We went to sign the paperwork, and put down the deposit. He informed us there would be an additional charge of $250.00 to use the fireplace.....fine, we said. Oh yeah, there is also an additional charge of $250.00 for the wedding permit. Wedding permit???? we ask. Yes, you have to have a permit to get married in the park. Were not getting married in the park we say, we are getting married in here. Yes, but the park charges us a permit fee to hold ceremonies in here, besides he says, you would have to pay the permit fee if you got married in the park, and since our building is in the park, we tact that fee onto the bill, and then forward that payment to the village. Our deposit check was already partially filled out. I told the manager we would have to get back to him. I called to village of Shorewood....they do not charge anyone a permit fee to get married in the park. They are on a first come/first serve basis. The only thing they charge the Hubbard is basic rent. I pointed all of this out to the manager. He insisted that he never said it was a permit fee. That fee helps to cover their recent remodel, and besides that he said, we also have things like a liquor license, and an electric bill to pay for. He also pointed out that they now have a ""bridal"" room where the bride can get dressed. I told him that I would not be using the room, and then I explained to him that all of these things were the cost of running a business. So, it seems the Hubbard (if they decide they want your business) will adjust what they charge you based on what type of dress you have on. If it's a wedding dress, they're going to try to squeeze every penny they can out of you. Based on my experience, I would not recomend this place to anyone...ever. If I could give them a negative star rating, I would. Pros: Beautiful Park Setting Cons: Everthing Else more

Great Fish Fry 10/19/2009

We had two types of fish--cod and walleye--and both were excellent. Great cole slaw & potatoes. Rolls were warm and tasty. The staff made us feel welcome with very attentive service. Will be back to try other items on the menu. more

A truly depressing shame! 9/25/2007

What a 'conundrum' , what an irony. This is easily one of the 5 most beautiful restaurant settings in SE Wisconsin. It is the type of place where you might say, ""I don't go there for the food - I go for the atmosphere."" However, even in this case, the food has to be at least edible. I can't begin to tell you how disgustingly bad the friday nite fare is. It is beyond description. Our tab for 5 was over $170 and I truly felt as if I was robbed. The only items which did not assault our senses, were the water and the bottled beer. more

Customer Service is not a day in the park... 8/3/2006

My husband and I fell in love with this location after attending brunch on sunday and after spending time in the park. Pros: FOOD!!! They definately have a great chef on staff!!! Cons: Very poor service and poor event planning staff. Overpriced. more

Poor service, lousy food, high cost 7/22/2006

Went there before reading ""Not Recommended"" reviews here - should have come and read review here first cause I have to NOT RECOMMEND this place anymore. It was fine 5-6 years ago, but WOW - how this has declined to this level and remain open is a mystery to me. more

Banquet Facility 3/15/2006

This facility is not recommended as a banquet facility. This is based on the poor customer service provided. more

Reception planning a stressful experience. 1/29/2006

I had been to Hubbard Park Lodge several times for brunch before selecting it as the site of our wedding reception. I had always enjoyed the natural environment, straightforward service, and out of the way location. It is beautiful and rustic. While HPL was initially responsive to our inquiries regarding the event, there were occasions throughout the planning process when weeks -even months would go by before we could get a response or confirmation. We were at times treated rudely and were not able to finalize the majority of contractual issues until two weeks before the event. While the wedding reception was lovely and the service met our expectations, HPL did not return property to us after the event. It was overall a very stressful experience. While bruch at HPL is a nice idea for large or small groups, its catering services have left me with a bad taste. Pros: Riverfront location, Lovely room, Cozy atmosphere Cons: Unresponsive service, Poor event planning, Communication more

Shorewood's Secret! 7/22/2002

This restaurant is hard to find, if you don't know what you're looking for. It's in the middle of a county park, and is not very accessible for those with difficulty walking. However, once you get there, the food, ambiance, service, and scenery are outstanding. The gourmet cuisine features Native Wisconsin foods like duck, wild rice, and fish. European specialties are also common. The Sunday brunch is truly the best in the city. Christmas is an especially beautiful time to visit, as they have an enormous tree in the center. It is very romantic, and dinint here usually leads to a moonlit walk in the park . . . Pros: Beautiful, Romantic, Flawless Cons: Expensive, Hard to Find, Use a Map! more
