hot cakes = not the cake you ordered!! Poor customer service 3/15/2012

Im so sad to say that they have screwed up twice now on custom orders. Once on my Wedding day when the custom drum Grooms cake never arrived (they remembered the wedding cake thank goodness), however the grooms cake, we were told ""was left in the fridge"" and had to wait till our return from the honeymoon to get it, then last night for my Fathers 60th birthday cake. I ordered a Lemon cake with pineapple chinks for filling and got a plain white cake with pineapple. The decoration was correct, however, the actual cake I ordered I did not receive, seeing that lemon cake is his favorite. Its a shame, I like their flavors, but I wont let them screw up another important event for me. I guess spending $100+ each on custom cakes wont change the ability to actually have it.. :-/ In an attempt to rectify the cake debacle, I called the bakery sunday, tuesday and wednseday. Finally on wednesday had Jen (a manager) tell me to bring a piece of the cake in to verify the flavors. Drove out to San Bernadino that night just to pick up a piece of the cake to bring back. Brough it in, and wouldnt ya know it, they claim that it was lemon flavored and refuse to do anything!!! They do not value their customers and stand behind a bland tasteless cake, claiming that it was indeed lemon. Well for the 8 of us that had the cake on Saturday night, they lose us as customers. You should never have to spend $100 on a cake that tastes like its from Albertsons, let alone on one that's not lemon!!! Their customer service is disgraceful and they do not deserve another cent of my hard earned money. You have been warned! more

Caution! Avoid fo uyour events 10/5/2009

Caution!!! Do not use for your special events. The online and in-store picture gallery convinced me to use them over a more tasty bakery, which is not hard to find. Only they could not have made to many more mistakes with my party tray order. This was for my wedding I ordered a cake, which was correct but that was it. They party tray of minis had was a mismatch of full size and minis- not one of the four mini cupcake flavors I ordered was included and they gave me Burnt Caneles! The worst part was their response. I had to make several contacts to get a partial credit, on the tray only of course and then I received a nasty letter. Pros: Up front Friendly Service Cons: Unreliable Orders-Little to no Comp -Nasty response more

Get over it Lady!!! 10/30/2008

I order from Hotcakes regularly and they are fabulous! the bake goods are fresh and great, the girls are hot and the owner very French! this place is happening, they deliver and that is priceless in LA. Don't waste your time writing a review if you have nothing nice to say you obviously have way too much time on your hands lady. Hotcakes makes the best CAKES IN TOWN! more

Great cake and customer service 10/16/2008

My husband got my birthday cake from here and I liked it so much I ordered my 3 year old's cake here, too. The woman who took my order was very accomodating to my special requests and the cake turned out beautifully. It's nice to have a good bakery in the neighborhood. more

Horrible, rude, unreliable service and mediocre bakes 9/17/2008

Horrible service! I called to order a light catering for a 10 person meeting the following day. I was assured that a box of assorted muffins, cookies, etc. would be delivered to my meeting area by 10 a.m with service materials - at least napkins included. Instead, a woman showed up half an hour late, on her cell phone and just handed over a box. When I called the store to complain, I asked for the manager and a woman who identified herself as the owner told me she had been the one who made the late delivery. She did not apologize but instead gave me excuses about why she couldn't fulfill this simple request. I asked for a refund and she screamed she would give me one and then hung up on me. Of the $65 bill, only $20 of it was refunded. And to top it off, the baked items were only so-so. I promise to never waste my time with this place again and I urge you to avoid it as well. more

Coconut Raspberry Butter Cream Cake Rocks 9/8/2008

Ordered the cake for a birthday and it was amazing. I'm not even a big sweet tooth and I can't get enough of that cake. Very light and moist even though it sounds really rich. I ordered the day before for a morning pick up and it was ready when I got there which was important since I was on a time deadline. Staff was very friendly and I had no problem parking right in front of the front door. Pros: Great product, well-priced, good service. Cons: More seating for coffee and desert more

Good, hard to get to 5/22/2008

The cupcakes were good, but the people working there weren't overly friendly. It was a bit annoying to park and the location isn't the best. more

No frills great bakery 2/11/2008

We have been getting birthday cakes for the last year or so. Although I try to stay away from past or present ""trendy"" desserts (honestly, did you ever have a tiramisu that beat out a good brownie?). I have to admit that their Red Velvet cake is really good (albeit rarely even -- it has more than a little bit of the ""homey"" lopsidedness to it). The cupcakes are to my mind as good as Sprinkles, although I am not a huge fan (I miss the Van de Kamp devil's food cupcake of my 60s childhood). The baker (owner?) seems to be pretty no-nonsense, but the people interfacing with the public (usually young women) have been uniformly pleasant. Pros: what they do, they do well Cons: not a place to linger more

A great local cupcake shop and bakery 1/28/2008

This is a local shop and not as popular as the other bakeries and cupcake shops ,but as for taste it can compete against the best of them. The place is no frills and isn't as chic as other places but their cupcakes are nice and light with flavorful icings that didn't bog down the tastes buds. The frosting on their strawberry cupcakes is amazing. I'm not the biggest icing fan and usually have to wipe some excess frosting off, this time however, I was wiping up the icing on my plate with my finger and into my mouth. The taste reminded me of those strawberry shortcake ice cream bars the ice cream truck would sell when I was growing up. The english toffee was also a good one and although I'm not a maple fan, the other LA Cupcake group members liked thier fall spice cupcake. Oh and I didn't get to try the coconut, but heard some good feedback on those too. Cupcakes are $2.50/each. Pros: Good value and good taste Cons: No frills shop more

Best Carrot Cake in Los Angeles and superior customer service all in one! 1/10/2008

I was looking for a great Carrot Cake for my partner's birthday. After reading some reviews on here, I went to Hotcakes Bakes! The reviews are completely accurate on here. The Carrot Cake was ""to die for"" and was made with the highest quality ingridients. It was worth every dollar I spent on it, and I will definitely order other cakes/desserts from them again. As well, their customer service was five (5) ***** stars as well. The staff wants their customers to come back and they offer superior service along with superior products. Pros: Customer service is superior which is becoming a rarity in LA. Cons: Street Parking but their ample parking in the back of the store/lot. more

Delicious cupcakes at a good price 11/18/2007

Although the location leaves something to be desired, Hotcakes Bakes is worth the stop if you are looking for a diverse choice of delicious cupcakes. Their cream cheese frosting is incredible! There is parking out back if you can't find a spot on the street. Pros: Delicious cupcakes Cons: Location more

A great find. Cupcakes are top of the line. Avoid the attitude, crowds, and high prices at 'Sprinkles,' Hotcakes is better! 11/3/2007

We happened upon this place after a huge meal at Paco Taco's 2 doors down. Even without an appetite, when I saw a guy outside eating a moist chocolate cupcake with beautiful cream cheese frosting, I went inside. The place has a beautiful, large selection of fresh cupcakes, pastries, etc. Smelled awesome in there. Friendly staff - very helpful. Looks like they do all kinds of specialty orders - beautiful cakes were being decorated by a woman in the back. It is like 'Sprinkles' in Beverly Hills only without the mean attitude, pushy lines, and high prices. These cupcakes were very reasonable in price - and much more moist than Sprinkles. Sprinkles in Beverly Hills has good icing, but DRY cupcakes. Remember, we ate Hotcakes' cupcakes on full stomachs - we were not even hungry. They still rules! All we were able to say the rest of today is, ""when can we go back to Hotcakes for more cupcakes?"" SOON. Street park on Centinela or behind it in the residential area. Still easier to park there than in Beverly Hills. Can't wait to try more! Very impressed. Pros: Best Cupcakes in town. Moist, flavorful goodness. Nice Service. Good Prices. Delicious! Cons: Too good! more

Fabulous Bakery, AMAZING CUPCAKES, cakes, brownies, etc. extremely friendly atsmosphere 7/17/2007

Recently, I have been going to this great bakery that I found on Centinella and Washington called Hotcakes. So far, everything that I have tried has been awesome. The cupcakes are like no other... ""Sprinkles"" do not even compare, they are much more expensive and not near as tasty. My favorite is the red velvet, and so then I ordered a red velvet cake and it was even better than the cupcake, which is hard to beat. I have also tried the brownies, cookies, lemon bars, and more, and I am still working my way through their many options. I haven't been dissapointed yet. As a true bakery lover, it is a lot of fun to walk in there on busy day and see everyone working and baking. You can see everything. It is very open and you stare straight into the kitchen. The smells are absolutely incredible. The smell is worth the trip alone. It is really fun to see a bakery where everything is being made right in front of you, fresh every day. It would be my pleasure to recommend this bakery to anyone and everyone. You will not be disappointed. Pros: Great smells. Welcoming and frienly atmoshphere. Clean. Open. Very yummy and tasty. Cons: The parking in front is a little limited, but I have found that you can park in the back and it is fine. more
