Hermitage Antiquarian Bookshop

Good: This is one of the most renouned rare and out-of-print bookshops in the country. It sports an incredible stash of first editions, signed firsts and rare books. While there is an excellent selection of reasonably priced books, I would opine that this shop is, in general, not cheap. However, books are priced competitively if you frequently search ABE.com or bookfinder.com. There are no paperbacks on "junk" books. Go somewhere else for that. They don't waste valuable real estate on low end stuff.. Bad: While there is some limited free parking, it is usually not available. The shop has limited room and there is no room for expansion.. Other: Once they know what you are interested in, they will search for those kinds of books and notify you when they get something in that may interest you.. more

The Hermitage is one of my father-in-law's favorite bookstores- he takes books there to sell, mostly. Well, we got roped into being his sherpas for the day one time and got to carry in a few boxes of his literary findings for the bookshop keeper's perusal. While we were waiting, we wandered the shop, looking at all the books. There were many first editions, hardbacks, beautiful old leather bound books... they also have some comfy chairs in the back, just in case you need to take some time to curl up with a book before you buy it. more
