Service was awful. Waited 1 hour and still the food was not at our table. Will not return more

AWESOME food, awesome service! 8/19/2011

I can't say enough good things about this place. I've had a coupon for a while and just kept putting off going. Don't make the same mistake! We went back for a 2nd time within 3 days. Their menu is unique, not like all the other Mexican restaurants. More authentic Mexican dishes, amazing seafood items. The salsa was amazing, very unique. The corn tortillas are homemade and so good. The strawberry margarita was a bit strong, but I'm a wimp. The staff was very friendly and gave excellent service. I believe it's family owned and operated. more

Tequila!! 6/25/2011

It's lovely that a good restaurant has opened where the old Giss's restaurant used to be. Never could get myself to eat in a restaurant that was named after something left on the floor of a 70's porn flick. Anyhow.... Been by three times now.. first for appetizers, then for dinner with the boss on Monday and we just had to go back tonight. This is good stuff. Salsa is different than everything I have tasted before. What makes it unique is the chile's they use. If I remember correctly.. sorry I enjoyed three of their watermelon special rita's tonight...Arbor chile is the base and a sweeter chile whose name just escaped me was added. We noshed through a bowl and half. Chips were thicker than most I have had with a great corn taste to them.....Happy Happy Joy Joy dance. Items we have had and my thoughts: Par de Huaraches: Cactus.. first time I have had this, and it was yummy with a scoop of their Salsa on it. Ceviche: Was not as good as I expected, and seemed really over limed if that is possible. Might of been made the day before and steeped to long. I'm willing to give it another shot. Taquitos al Pastor: Greasy, flavorful, and five to an order, which is plenty to share. Pescado a la Veracruzana: Excellent fresh fish with crisp veggies in the Veracruzana sauce, served on a banana leaf. Classy, fresh and lite. Pollo en Mole Blanco with Chicken: Mole was tasty with a deep rustic flavor and the Chicken Breast was cooked to perfection. Enchiladas de Espinacas: Awesome in flavor with sauteed mushrooms, garlic and almonds. It is quite rich with flavors and possibly some of the best I have ever had. A dish which wasn't even on the menu since my boss wanted something very hot and spicy with meat. What arrived was sorta like a pork and beef stew with many different chile's in it.. it was HOT, and yet surprising tasty. The chiles all worked well as one. It was a really grand gesture by the owner to even put this together. Desserts we have had: Nieve de Mole: Holy Crack... Ice Cream with the Mole sauce.. so refreshing and an interesting combination of flavors Crepas de Limon con Salsa de Zarzamora: The creamy lemon sauce on the crepes was full of zest.. crepes were a little thick, but still soft and tender to the bite Pestel de tres leches con Changos Zamoranos: Dear God.. this is what milk was made for.. Thank goodness for cows..creamy, sweet delicious sauce, crumbling cake to soak it all up.. I have to get the recipe for the tres leches. Look, this is a local, small restaurant, trying to do well in a tough economy. It is a stumble, drop and crawl from my casa. We will continue to patronize it and enjoy the great, caring service. Watching them make little mistakes as they grow into a wonderful experience. So, get off your couch, take off the snuggie which you are filling with farts, and check it out. more

Worst Mexican Food 5/13/2010

Sine we go out often we thought we will try something different in mexican food & ended up in this restaurant yesterday. This one advertises as Interior Mexican food. So the only veggie options are salads & spinach quesadilla. Pros: staff Cons: taste, cost, quality & quantity more

Interior Mexican Food in South Austin 4/4/2010

We have been to Hecho en Mexico many times since they opened. The food has always been excellent (the mole is the best I have had) and you can't beat the service. The owners and staff are extremely friendly and so efficient. We love having such a quality restaurant in SW Austin. Pros: Excellent Food and Great, Friendly Service Cons: Chips could be thinner more

Food Not Good 7/11/2009

The taste of the food was disappointing and just plain not tasty, I ordered tacos that I could have made at home with canned chicken and store bought flour tortillas....my husband's enchiladas tasted strange. Also, having spent considerable amount of time in Mexico and sampling food from various regions, this did not remind me of anything I have ever had there. Maybe we ordered the wrong things but we do not intend on returning to find out. Pros: Service, Convenient Location Cons: Food Food Food more

Great Breakfast Tacos! 4/27/2009

I was hungry when passing by the other morning before work. I stopped in and ordered a few breakfast tacos to go. They were delicious and filled me up for the morning! The staff was VERY friendly as well. I hear they serve a great margarita and will be back! more

Best service In Town 2/17/2009

Great Staff, extremely friendly. Really good food and fair prices. Everything tasted fresh and was not the same old boring TexMex. We will be back and think that you should give it a try. Pros: Great staff and food. Cons: No beer yet (waiting on license) more

The best interior mexican food in Austin!! 2/15/2009

As a Mexican-born foodie, I can tell a good Mexican restaurant. This is it. By far, the most authentic interior Mexican restaurant I have found after 10 years of living in Austin. Everything we tried on the menu at Hecho en Mexico was really awesome . Pros: Awesome authentic mexican food, good service - TRY IT! Cons: South of Oak Hill may be abit of a drive for some, it is worth it. more

overpriced and not tasty. nice staff though. 2/14/2009

I was hoping to have a new tasty fun place close to home, but no such luck. Its not awful but not good at all. We are not going back. Its not authentic interior mexican cuisine and its not tex mex either. It is very overpriced and there's no ambiance. The staff is nice and attentive but thats about all the positive we have to share. I wouldn't recommend it. more

Good now, better as time goes by 2/12/2009

Our large group of 17 would have been a heckuva challenge for any establishment, much less one that's been open less than two months, but Hecho En Mexico met the challenge for seating and service. We were split among three servers, but there was no confusion at all, even for our split checks. As for me, I had the Camarones Adobados, bacon-wrapped shrimp in adobado sauce ($14.95, one of two or there dishes at the top of the price range). There were twelve shrimp in my order on skewers, and they were done right, although they weren't quite as oven-hot as I might have liked. That was undoubtedly due to the staff's efforts to deliver as many meals as possible at the same time to our group. The shrimp themselves were a good size, about 25-30 count (meaning per pound), a good compromise between size and tastiness. The veggies were particularly tasty (no TexMex refried beans), and the side dish of veggie-enhanced rice was the perfect consistency for me - a bit sticky, but still fluffy. The people around me had tacos al pastor (six to an order), and looked exactly right, and mole tacos, which looked to be the proper richness in consistency and color. Pros: prices, menu creativeness Cons: no liquor license yet more

A Hidden Gem 2/1/2009

This is my new favorite restaurant! High-end Interior Mexican cuisine, and the prices are not much more than your typical Tex Mex place. Everyone in my group raved about the food. Another reviewer complained that the food was bland, but ours definitely was not. I had the stuffed poblano topped with pomegranite seeds. It was a beautiful presentation and very flavorful. My other favorite Mexican restaurants are Manuels and Las Palomas, but Hecho En Mexico has better food, and it's less expensive. The service was a little slow, but not too bad, and the waitress was so nice that it really didn't bother us. If you're looking for quick Tex Mex go someplace else. If you want great food, gracious service, and a comfortable atmosphere, this is it. Pros: Price, Food, Atmosphere more

Bland food, slow service, not on a par with other Mexican restaurants in Austin 1/30/2009

I'm surprised by the 5-star reviews this place has. I tried this place for lunch with a few friends recently, and although it looked very promising, it seriously underwhelmed. The main issue was the food, which was pretty bland overall, and the service, which was very slow even though there were only a few other people there. The salsa was the blandest I have ever had in Texas, and the chips were reminiscent of Tostitos. That was our first clue as to the quality of the food. I had a chicken taco and a beef taco, along with rice and beans. The chicken was OK, but the beef was tough, and both were not well seasoned. The guacamole that came with it was nice, though. The beans were bland (I added salt which helped a little) as was the rice. My friends' dishes were similarly lacking in flavor. In addition, we sat for about 5-10 minutes without so much as a menu, chips & salsa, or water. After we ordered, the food took a long time to arrive, and was borderline cold when it did. All this and the place was less than half full. I'm assuming this place is locally owned so I really wanted to like it and support it, but sadly I do not plan on returning. Pros: Convenient location Cons: food, service more

Authentic and Delicious 12/22/2008

We just tried this new restaurant for the first time and are already hooked. The food is great and the people are friendly. There are plenty of choices for breakfast and everything taste fresh and homemade. Give this place a try, you will not be disappointed. more
