SOOO good as long as you don't get food poisoning 2/4/2010

I live very close to Hara, and my boyfriend and I get it all the time. The prices are great and the rolls are delicious. When you order takeout they give you free edamame and miso soup for each person, and if you eat there you usually get edamame, miso AND green tea ice cream for free. Their happy hour is insanely long, something like 3:30 to 9:30. \r \r I've never had a problem with service, at dinnertime it takes a little while to get seated because it's so popular, but so what? Any crowded restaurant is like that.\r \r Our happy sushi world was recently shattered, however, when a Boston roll (raw salmon on top) gave my boyfriend a terrible bout of food poisoning that involved uncontrollable vomiting and a trip to the ER. I was lucky enough to remain unscathed. Call us stupid but we've went back since then because it's so good, and so far no more poisoning. Pros: amazing prices, really good food, lots of freebies Cons: a one-time food poisoning more

Horrible Service 10/8/2009

We made reservations for 4 at 8 PM. We got there at 7:50 PM and did not get seated until 9:45 PM. We waited almost 2 hours for just okay sushi! The host was not helpful when we checked on our table and I will not be coming back. Pros: Cheap sushi & drinks plus free miso & green tea ice cream Cons: Long Wait...Extremely Long!!! more

Great Sushi! Great Service! 7/14/2009

I love Hara Sushi! They are always friendly and have great sushi for the price. Plus, they include free edamame, miso soup, and green tea ice cream! The place is always packed and is especially fun when you go during happy hour. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who loves sushi and a good time! Pros: Excellent sushi and service Cons: Nothing more

They need help. 4/26/2009

As previously stated, the service is terrible. Some of their staff are unprofessional and unable to communicate. They aren't attentive and on a busy night will basically ignore you until you make a scene of flagging down whoever you can get. Worse than the service, in my opinion, is the food. It's just not quality fish, not fresh. I am pretty sure some of these reviews touting the fresh fish are planted by employees or owners. I live really close by and was sooo excited that a sushi restaurant was opening a few years ago and my boyfriend and I gave the special rolls and sashimi at least 6 tries but it was always a disappointment. It remains popular b/c it is a cheap place for young people to get together and drink and eat, but I don't think they are very concerned w/ quality sushi. I still will get takeout if I'm starving and lazy but I stick to one select dish or veggie rolls. I am only criticizing b/c I hope they make some changes! Pros: OK when I'm desperate for take-out. Cons: Food & Service more

My new favorite place!!!! 3/10/2009

This place is the best!!! The sushi is sooo fresh and delicious. The prices are unbelievable and the rolls are really big. A huge specialty roll is only around seven dollars! Free miso soup and edamame too. It's great to know a place that has happy hour prices on drinks at 9pm before you go out. The parking in the back was free and very easy. I will probably be back here way too often! Pros: sushi prices, quick service, happy hour EVERY day til 9:30 Cons: won't take reservations for large parties more

AMAZING!! 2/11/2009

This place is amazing. The sushi is super cheap (the cheapest that I have found in LA) and tastes amazing. Also, the rolls are HUGE!!! On top of that, the service was great. I highly recommend eating here!!! It has replaced all of my other sushi restaurants hands down. Pros: great prices, great service, delicious food, free parking in rear, happy hour more

They know how to ""roll"" 11/18/2008

Of all the sushi restaurants in this area, I have to say, this place is my favorite! Fresh sushi is hard to find, but you'll be satisfied here. Seared ahi tuna and the spider roll are a must have. Although the decor is not a 5 star restaurant, the ambiance gives off a homey touch with dishware that don't mesh. Overall, the best part is the price you pay for good sushi! My boyfriend and I never fail to spend more than $30 every time we go! Pros: complimentary miso soup and green tea ice cream Cons: crowded even on weeknights more

No Brainer.. This place is amazing! 11/7/2008

Ok.. So this place is not the most service oriented. Nor is it the most astetically pleasing restaurant to visit for sushi... IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A PRETENTIOUS ENVIRONMENT TO EAT YOUR RAW FISH... GO ELSEWHERE, Move to Hollywood while your at it, date people in a much younger age demographic, oh yeah.. and go hang out at Nobu. \r \r This place is for people who enjoy Sushi, the sushi is GOOD. the Fish is fresh, i mean... we are in LA. This place also serves up hot sake for a great price. This is my favortie spot to eat before hitting the town. \r Make sure to call for reservations bc on the weekend this place gets bonkers Pros: great fish, great value Cons: crowded, service is so-so, more

Excellent deal 10/13/2008

The Sushi is really decent! Add in the low price and almost-always-on ""happy hour"" and included free green tea ice cream and miso soup, and youv'e got yourself a deal! Sometimes, service is frustratingly slow and they are undermanned. But if you go on a not-so-busy weeknight, it's a great deal! Pros: Price, Decent Sushi Cons: Sometimes service is iffy more

I should know better. 1/2 price for Sushi can never be a good thing. 10/1/2008

We made the mistake of going to this place because we were hungry, wanted Japanese food and it said ""1/2 Price Sushi"". You get what you pay for. The beer was 1/2 price and you can't go wrong with that. I've been to many sushi places and I have to say this was the worst. I have to be honest and say that I did only try the maki that was on the 1/2 price menu. I have never left any form of sushi on my plate but tonight was a first. We also split a bowl of udon. The udon was very bland and the tempura tasted like it was cooked in very tired oil. \r Since going there I have read decent reviews about the ""premium"" rolls and it's unfortunate that I was lured by the 50% off sign and didn't try the better rolls. I have to assume though that the yellow tail that I had was the same that was in the premium rolls. \r It was a fun atmosphere and the wait staff was nice and fairly attentive. I won't be back though. Life is too short for discount sushi. more

Great sushi, very casual 8/11/2008

I live right down the street from this place and I love going here. The sushi is great. My favorite is the tuna lover roll w/ spicy tuna and avocado on the inside and seared tuna on top. It's so good and it comes with a small seaweed salad on the plate, which I also love. I'm not a huge fan of the maki rolls, which are always half price. Each time I've ordered one, I haven't really enjoyed it. It's usually sloppy and just really plain. But very cheap, so if you don't mind it being plain then go for it. They also have really cheap beer during happy hour, which seems like it's always going on. You can get a regular sized bottle of asahi or sapporo for $1.99! This is a fun place and always busy so the fish is fresh. Plus you get free miso soup with every meal, and if you spend $10 you also get free green tea ice cream!! Great place! Pros: Great sushi, good prices, cheap beer Cons: ? more

Food below average. Service is terrible. 2/8/2008

This restaurant is below average among the Japanese restaurants I have been to. Sushi and rolls are so-so. BBQ beef rib is not good, too hard and chewy. I had to ask for knife to cut it. The service is the worst. There were two waitresses. They were no where to be found. My wife and I waved hands, but we couldn't get their attention. Mind you, they were only serving 3-4 tables. One of the waitress doesn't speak English. I had to leave my seat, and went to look for waitress, and told them I'm done and ready for the check. I had a Entertainment card. Hara Sushi was listed in the Entertainment book. But I was told they don't honor Entertainment card. In conculsion, food is below average. No service. I cannot think of any reason to go back. Pros: Don't have to wait for a table. Not busy Cons: Food below average. Service is terrible. Waitress doesn't speak English more

One of the best sushi places on the Westside 2/4/2008

I (and my boyfriend and my family) have been coming here consistently for the 2 years or so since Hara opened. I've had consistently great food, and have been impressed with the congeniality of the sushi chefs and the staff (though I'll admit some waitresses are a bit annoying, i.e. forgetful - but the chefs are darling). The sushi has always been fresh and delicious, and I am very picky about my sushi, especially my salmon. The only dish I wouldn't recommend is the chicken teriyaki, which my boyfriend describes as ""cheap tasting."" Pros: Great prices, sushi always fresh, generally feel welcomed by staff Cons: Staff can be a bit slow/forgetful, some of the non-sushi dishes are subpar more

I have dined in many places mainly 5 star restaurants but this one can easily compete with the best sushi places in town for half the price. The food is VERY FRESH and its clean the free soup tastes great and the ice cream w/ some chocolate syrup is excellent. I am not sure what the other person is talking about. Since trying this place out i have been back there at least 30 other times. I really can not believe that someone that was just unhappy w/ the service would try to put everything about the restaurant down.. thats a shame. GO THERE YOU WILL LOVE IT.. I GUARANTEE. Pros: food, freshness, price, service, clean. more

DON'T EAT HERE!!! 11/2/2007

If there were ever words to live by, they would be ""don't ever try to get a deal on Japanese food."" It was an overall bad experience! The service was mediocre (our waitress was inattentive and forgetful) and the food was awful. My salad was inedible (the dressing might have expired...) and the quality of the meat was bad. The fish on the sushi was not fresh (even the avocado in the rolls tasted like it had been sitting around for awhile). The free miso soup was very salty, and the free ice cream tasted weird. So basically I left unsatisfied and with a stomachache. Pros: You think you're getting a deal, free parking on the Westside Cons: really really bad food, sub-par service more
