great taste ..... good work Actors in turtlenecks, hipsters and West L.A. neighborhood folk mingle, smirking collectively over one of the better-kept local secrets. The sushi bar on a Saturday night gives great theater, with chefs working at light speed and a friendly crowd that just might share their huge tempura rolls with you more

Overrated 1/20/2009

I have to agree with another review I've read here. The sushi is outrageously expensive and, frankly, many of these rolls taste bland and the same. I've eaten here 3 times and my reaction has become progressively negative. The service (especially the host who seats you - they definitely want you to eat at the tiny sushi bar, as opposed to a table) is not very gracious either. Pros: Quiet room, fresh ingredients Cons: Service, parking, cost more

Great fresh fish, nice ambience and service. 8/16/2007

Decided to try this place out, sushi is very fresh, the toro was excellent, and so was the Japanese halibut. Prices are not bad, a little bit on the pricey side but not near the other high end places in LA Pros: Great fresh fish, great sushi chefs, quick and friendly service Cons: Slightly on the picey side, difficult to park in the area. more

My Dad took my wife and me to this restaurant on a Saturday night with an 8:45 reservation. They were very busy and couldn't seat us until 9pm. The service was pretty good after that except that the waitress kept trying to sell us on all the extras. For example rice on the outside of the roll costs more and there is additional charge for ginger. This on top of the fact that the very expensive sushi & rolls are not very good made the experience disappointing. The rolls were not prepared very well (very messy),the rice did not have a good texture, and many cuts of the fish were mushy. There are much better sushi restaurants in town that cost much less. more

The best sushi in the WORLD !!! 8/25/2006

I took my friends who is a food critique in Paris and she was simply AMAZED ! This restaurant is simply the best sushi restaurant in L.A. I've tried 14 sushi restaurants the past 7 months this is the best one from far. I""ve tried japanese restaurants in NY, Paris, London, again this one is the best from far. The menu is huge and all the sushis and rolls are unique creations it's a bit confusing at the begining so just ask your waiter for something with salmon or tuna... Simply the best of the best. Pros: the most amazinf sushis in L.A Cons: addictive !! more

I don't think i've ever been so passionate about a restaurant, but the truth is Hamasaku is more than a restaurant, it is an experience. I never knew food could taste so good. There are several amazing must haves, such as (in order) FOX ROLL, SALMON OVER CRAB AND THE LIZZY ROLL. I have brought several friends to hamasaku just for the first two.. one of them cried, seriously, it was that good. Also, the service is the best I've experienced. Great hosts, great owner Toshi. I love this place. Expensive but worth every penny! Pros: food, service Cons: price more

Eh 4/3/2006

I, like many others had very high expectations for Hamasaku due to hype. But as we all know, hype comes cheap in LA. But the sushi at Hamasaku sure doesn't. I had a reservation for 9, was seated by 10:30? But to be fair, even Keyshawn Johnson who was also there had to wait an hour to be seated. The sushi rolls range in price from $15- $25 per roll. If you like a lot of rice and prefer Tuna and Avocado on every roll this is your place. I was unimpressed, especially since I paid $140 for two people. I could have eaten like a king at Katsu Ya at that price. Probably won't go back. Pros: Tuna Cons: Ambience, Wait, Expensive more

Best Sushi in LA! 1/11/2006

I've eaten at all the best sushi retaurants in LA and this i by far the best! They have the most inventive rolls and so many to choose from. Even my friend who is not a big sushi fan, loved evrything we ordered! A little overpriced, but worth saving up for! Pros: amazing rolls, great quality fish Cons: expensive :( more

Hamasaku is one of the best sushi restaurants in Los Angeles, especially for those who love rolls. They are all amazing, huge, and tasty, and the fish is so fresh. Cons: parking more

Spend your money elsewhere 9/27/2005

I went to this place twice just to make sure the first time wasn't a fluke. It wasn't. The food is just average but so expensive. I spent $30.00 on lunch by myself. I had six pieces of sushi and tempura. Here you get two pieces of sushi at about $6.50 per order. I don't understand why people rave about this place. I have had better food just 1/2 a mile away on sawtelle for half the cost. The decor isn't even that great. Cons: Value, Parking more

What's all the buzz about??? 9/17/2005

This restaurant came highly recommended by a co-worker. She neglected to tell me not to order the dumpling appetizers which consisted of two dumplings for over $20. The halibut was dry and the sushi itself was just satisfactory. I would only recommend the tenderloin which my friend was good enough to share with the rest of us. With all the restaurant choices in L.A. this is not one I would be going back to.... unless I enjoy throwing my money away. Pros: plenty of staff Cons: parking is limited more

whats the BIG DEAL ? 8/1/2005

dined at hamasaku a few weeks ago with wifey. to put it simply, not IMPRESSED. the service was mediocre, food was okay, the host toshi was a complete wreck and confused and the bill was OUTRAGEOUS. DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY!! maybe on a business account (someone eles') is the only way ill go back. Pros: parking Cons: food, service more

Tasty 7/21/2005

One of the best sushi places in town! The fish is incredibly fresh and the rolls include unusual ingredients like apples and mangos. The owner, Toshi, treats everyone like royalty, making it feel like a real neighborhood joint. It's a bit expensive, but the fresh fish and creative rolls are worth it. Make a can get VERY busy! Try the Japanese Pancake and the JKX roll! Pros: Fresh Fish, Creative Rolls, Great Service Cons: Somewhat Expensive more

A Neighorhood Sushi Stable 4/7/2005

For lunch is fine but dinner faces a long wait. Delicious and inventive sushi rolls but with funky names hard to decipher- you need to read the description to know. Service and ambiance is not extraordinary, but a hidden stable for a casual outing but not ideal for a big group unless you want to wait long. The biggest turn-off is a price tag on eel sauce (written on bottom of menu) which you think, ""What's the big deal?!"" Pros: funky sushi rolls Cons: weird names for rolls more

a dime a dozen... 3/23/2005

i looked at their menu and thought, this has exactly what i'm looking for - inventive rolls and a few fusion dishes. the ambiance is quaint. the food? decent for LA standards but mediocre for my own. they have a great combination of sushi & rolls but the taste is pretty blah. the more i ate, the more bland it got. portions are small and the prices are very high. black cod in miso - my absolute fav fish, but as an app, it was the smallest piece i've ever seen served. worth one experience if u're in LA but not a place i'd visit again nor a place i'd recommend. the bill is not worth stomaching. a good meal accomplishes the feat in leaving u wanting more, but by the end of this meal, i was ready to leave. not a bad meal but just typical LA to me. Pros: ambiance Cons: food, price, busy more

Worth going back again and again 2/21/2005

I've been going to this restaurant for over four years and it just keeps getting better and better. The food is consistently outstanding. The albacore and uni (sea urchin) are the best in the city. The staff is great even though they run throughout the entire evening and the hostess tries her best to manage long waits on busy nights by offering tea or wine. The manager is there every night on the floor bringing food, drinks and chatting with the guests. We have taken all of our friends there and we have a whole group of out of town friends that insist we go there every time they are in LA. It's so great I had 15 people there for my husband's 30th birthday on Saturday night. It was a huge success. Pros: Creative Sushi, Excellent Quality, Attentive Staff more

Don't believe the hype 4/13/2004

Disappointing. Typical westside establishment that people frequent because it's hip or trendy even though the food is mediocre and the service is lacking. Perhaps Hasasaku is not meant to be a sushi restaurant but a japanese restaurant because the sushi is nothing to write home about. I've had similar grade sushi at other restaurants for a fraction of the price. Definitely not for sushi purists. The highlight was a speciality sushi called the DJ Sushi, where they use crab meat as the sushi rice and topped it with seared albacore and a slice of avocado. But even that would not warrant a return visit. Cons: , average sushi more

A taste of LA 3/29/2004

We started out our evening with reservations at 8. We got to HamaSaku about 7:45. There is only about 5 feet square to wait for a table, with one wooden bench to sit on. After being passed up by two groups (one was friends of the owner, the other plain pushy) we were seated at 9pm. The food was very good, although very small portions. The crab stuffed jalopenos are a rip off, but the green tea dessert is nummy. Celebrity citing also! Pros: Good Food, Unique Cons: , Bad Service, Expensive more

Magic in your mouth 1/26/2004

This place is a category of its own. I have never seen such a creative menu, with such amazing results. Each roll is totally unique and always surpasses all expectations. The cucumber wrapped rolls are unbelievably refreshing, the army roll...splendid. This place is always packed and for good reason! more

It gets better with every visit 11/24/2003

I have been going to Hamasaku for a few years now. This is the best sushi place in town. Period. The green dragon may be the best sushi roll ever invented. The salmon/crab sushi is phenomenal...melts in your mouth and is an experience you just have to try. What makes this place so good is that they do new things with sushi and excel with every attempt. Every time I go back, they have great new selections. Always a treat. Pros: Originality, Quality, Delicious more
