It Was The Best Of Times - It Was The Worst of Times! 10/6/2011

My Son brought us here for our Birthday dinner. We were greeted well by our waiter. The food was superb! The steaks were seasoned just right, hot and juicy. That was the Best of Times. However, the decibel level of the crowd was so LOUD, no one could hear to even talk. We literally had to shout at our small table to be heard! Horrible ambient! This was the Worst of Times. I will NEVER bring anyone here that I would want to spend a relaxing evening in meal and conversation with, IT WON""T HAPPEN HERE! Once was enough for me! more

Not worth the trouble or expense 12/1/2010

While the food was tasty and our waiter great, overall I score it an underwhelming two stars. Although I made reservations in advance and clearly stated the reason for our patronage as a birthday celebration, we were initially sat in a cold corner (beside French doors in 30 degree weather) with a black wall across from us. When I asked the hostess to please relocate us, she countered ""but isn't this Romantic?"" We were moved to a two person table shoved against a brick wall, at which point I realized even with reservations you can't expect a good table at Hal's. They cram as many tables as possible into the snug dining room yet still expect you to pay ""fine dining"" prices. While the food was quite good, it is comparable to Houston's where I've never been crammed into a corner like Baby on Dirty Dancing. Upon trying to leave, the valet lost our ticket and we waited in the cold for 30 minutes until I finally complained again and was finally serviced. Morale of the experience, complaining is the only way to get good service at Hal's. It's way overpriced for the experience. I will not go back. more

Best Steaks in Atlanta 6/5/2010

Hal's never disappoints. The service is always perfect, the waitstaff is professional yet friendly, and the steaks are AMAZING! Everything is always perfectly prepared. Pros: Service, Food!,Atmosphere more

Sorta good 6/1/2010

First time at Hal's although I have been a resident of the area for 30 years. I sat at the bar ordered a blackened filet medium rare. The order took much longer than expected. The steak came out pale and cold. I told the bartender that the steak wasn't blackened. She proceeded to argue with me and pointed to a couple of small spots on the steak that were dark. She also explained to me that the steak was seasoned. I was really interested in an enjoyable dinner out and wasn't in the mood to argue. Nonetheless, she brought me out a new steak that was medium well, not what I ordered but it was edible. Pros: Location Cons: Average food. more

Great Steaks Great Service 4/30/2010

Had an amazing bone-in ribeye...the only problem was that i asked that it be cooked medium and it was definitely medium-well/almost well done. No pink whatsoever. Other than that the meal was perfection! Great crab appetizer and wonderful burbant potatoes! Pros: Yummy food!!! Cons: Overcooked steak more

The Best 6/11/2009

Have been to Mortons, Capital Grill, Rathbuns Steaks - Hal's is hands down ... without question the best steak I have ever had. Pros: Steaks more

Best Overall Restaurant Ever 12/26/2008

I live in Louisiana, the home of good food. I love Ruth's Chris and Bones, but every time I come to Atlanta I without fail eat at Hal's. It has the best menu, food, and atmosphere combination of any restaurant anywhere.......and I've eaten all over the world. I see a couple of reviewers compained about the service. You must have been it on a bad night. Give it another chance and ask for Hal, himself....you'll be treated like a king. Pros: food, service, atmosphere Cons: can get loud at times more

Great Food...Condoscending and Rude Waiters. 11/14/2008

I have been to Hal's at least a dozen times. I truely enjoy the food and atmosphere. I do find however, that unless you are one of Buckhead's ""Elite"" then the staff is less than nice. I have dined in many of Atlanta's steakhouses..Bones, Chops and Hals. Bones service win's by a LANDSLIDE. I am younger (not young) than most of the diners' in there, but I do have the money to eat at any of these restaurants. Hal's Staff is rude...I've given them MANY chances but enough is enough. Pros: Filet Cons: Staff more

Exceptional Food and Service 4/6/2008

We don't submit restaurant reviews often, but Hal's deserves the high praise you see in these reviews. The restaurant knocks it out of the park every time. The steaks far outshine those of Chops and Ruths Chris. Last night we went to Hal's for a celebratory evening, and we both had the best steaks we've ever tasted. Ask for the NY Strip. You cannot go wrong with any of their selections, but the strip was out of this world. Pros: The Food & Menu, The Service Cons: Location seems ""tucked away"" -- but maybe that's better for those of us who've found Hal's more

Strong Steak, Drinks and Serious Service and Fun 2/12/2008

I dont write many reviews of restaurants- but my experience this weekend at Hal's was awesome. This is not your average fine restaurant. It hits a lot of marks all at once somehow- kindof a new york feel- you can tell there are many regulars. young and old mingle at the bar (full of action)- extremely professional service, great menu, the crowd is sophisticated and hype- Not for the faint of heart. Strongly recommended. Pros: relatively unknown Cons: can get crowded more

The best views of old atlanta and best filet on the planet. 1/12/2008

When I drank, and I drank often, I wanted restaurants that could cater to my lemon drop addiction. Hal's did not disappoint one bit. This place has the best atmosphere -- you can't believe some of the sights you see in this location! But it's not just the people-watching -- you have to have their steak. It has to be the best in Atlanta. The service is terrific. The valet is prompt and courteous. I cannot describe how we are to have been introduced to this restaurant!! Pros: Best food and service Cons: Sometimes a little crowded. more

Believe the hype - 1/10/2008

Hal's was recommended to me by a co-worker who raved that Hal's had the best steaks in Atlanta - particularly for a restaurant that a lot of people have not heard of. I was looking for a nice place to take my girlfriend for her birthday dinner that was NEW (and since we eat out a lot, this was no easy feat). On his recommendation, I chose Hal's. Everything my co-worker said in recommending Hal's proved true. The steak was absolutely excellent - better than most of the higher profile/more well known steakhouses in Atlanta. Service was excellent - the staff including the host were very attentive to our every need. Everything was just the way I had hoped it would be. I will absolutely be coming back. The only downside appears to be that word is out on Hal's and it gets really crowded (including the party of 10 men next to us who were very loud). But in terms of ambience, food, wine list and service, I have not found a better establishment anywhere in Atlanta. Pros: Steaks, service Cons: can get crowded more

Very Disappointing 11/23/2007

So after hearing a lot about this place, we finally went. And it was so bad I feel the need to sit down and write about it right away. The service was GREAT!!! Bobby (our server) rocked. He was attentive and very prompt without being over bearing. However, the food was abyssmal. The trout was too buttery...to the point where I felt like I was going to be sick. The salmon was better but still, too buttery. If you would like to clog your arteries, this is the place for you. The dessert was mediocre. The only thing we liked was the house pinot. Not to mention the fact that this was the most over priced restaurant with some terrible food, we had ever been to. We don't mind paying for good food, and there have been some pretty expensive restaurants we frequent, that we absolutely love! This was just the worst food I have ever had in my 10 years of living in Atlanta. No taste to the food, just...a lot of butter. And I love butter! Which is why this is strange and very honest, coming from me. I would strongly recommend not going there. Pros: Service Cons: Food more

Best filet in Atlanta 9/27/2007

Been to Bones, Chops, Ruth Chris, etc. Hal's has by far the best filet in town. Plus the atmosphere is great and has an intimate local feel. You will not be disappointed! more

Not great food...save your money 6/7/2007

My husband and I decided to try Hal's for our wedding anniversary. We would always see lots of cars parked outside when we passed by the area. I read the reviews and thought, ""why not?"" My husband ordered the filet au poivre and I ordered the snapper franchaise. I felt all of the food was really salty. I have eaten at Bone's, Chops, Ruth's Chris, Flemmings, and Prime for steaks which are much better. The complimentary sides (creamed spinach and mashed potatoes) were average at best. My snapper was cooked well but the lemon butter sauce was really salty (wondered if they use salted butter to make the sauce). The filet was good but not great. It was juicy but they don't know how to properly butterfly a filet (he got two separate pieces). We will not be returning. It is too overpriced for the type of retro appearing cusine they are serving. You can judge for yourself. Pros: valet, good creme brulee Cons: salty food, overpriced more

Not A Happy Birthday Here! Unprofessional Management! 5/5/2007

This was supposed to be a Happy Birthday occasion, for a very good friend. We came early, and ordered drinks, which were O.K., until all our party arrived. Of course we all wanted the much touted steaks. At our waiters suggestion, we ordered all sides, family style, to pass around. The steaks finally came after a long wait. Pure salt. Birthday girl had to send hers back three times, and finally the little piece of same fatty meat came back, and she was just over it. The creamed spinach, and whatever else the sides were, just tasted of salt. When our waiter brought the check to the table, sides were charged to each person individually, and double on some guests tabs. We asked for the manager on duty, who we found out later is the owner's son, and he certainly did not know what he was doing. It took us three days with our Bank, to get the charges straightened out. Even heavy drinks at Johnny's, could not overcome this Birthday celebration. Pros: Close To Birthday Girl's Condo! Cons: Salty Steaks & Mass Confusion! more

Best Cow in ATL 12/6/2006

I've eaten at all of Atlanta's high-end steak houses and this is the place for the best steak in the city. Everything about Hal's is perfect: the service is great; drinks are fantastic (try a Sapphire martini w/ stuffed olives); atmosphere is laid-back and the food is remarkable. Did I mention they have the best steak in the city? Pros: Everything Cons: Can't eat like this everyday more

Great Experience 11/5/2006

I don't know if I will be able to capture how wonderful my dining experience was here but I will give it my best try. As a tradition, I have the opportunity to dine with the ""Big Boss"" at the conclusion or last night of a meeting. He always asks me to choose the place and I have been somewhat succesful in the past by choosing places I had been to before and had experienced. Not was the case on this night, I turned over the decision making to my close friend and colleague who lives nearby to make the call. None of us had heard of the place and we even kept asking for her to repeat the name so we would get it right. However, once we walked in the doors, my worries were gone. The dark and cozy atmosphere was perfect for this dinner and it felt as if we were at a friendly neighborhood restaurant. That is a positive thing. The food and service that followed was outstanding and rivaled some of the fine dining restaurants in Atlanta. The attention to the true tastes of its menu items were noticeable in both it's Lobster bisque and especially in it's Gumbo. The 12 ounce Filet I had was wonderful and everyone at our table left full and happy. I would highly recommend this place !!! Pros: Locals place and not touristy Cons: nothing more

Happy Hour Low Down 3/5/2006

Went with a friend for cocktails. Drinks are strong, complimentary fried chicken drummettes, cheese and veges, waitresses young & pretty, clientele ""Good Ol' Boys."" Most people who come here aren't as thrifty as me, but I enjoyed the over-abundance of free food since everyone else was ordering from the pricey menu. We did order the Oysters and they were delicious. We will come back for the food and to see if the clientele is different. Pros: food, strong drinks, service Cons: good ol' boys more
