we generally always filed our own taxes, but this year since my husband was active duty Army and claimed home of record in the state of Maine and i worked in Kansas all year, we figured we needed a 'professional' to help. after 3 hours of waiting to be seen, we were taken into this guys office, and he flat out told us that since my husbands home of record was Maine, my income was taxed thru them AND Kansas- basically saying we owed over 800.00 in income tax. a week later, i received a notice from the state of Kansas saying there was something wrong with my return-my husband went back to HR block and showed them this letter, and they said 'we have never seen this before...' and they supposedly faxed our information again, without even giving it a second look. well i contacted state of Kansas myself, and they said our tax preparer messed up, and they refunded my money. with the tax deadline upcoming to pay in, i called the state of Maine to see if they were expecting payment from us as well, since the tax 'proffesional' told us there were no state laws in Maine to protect their military members, and we had to pay in... well, they were WRONG. the Maine income tax state worker told me about their 'safe harbour act' and that all of the money my husband made should have been refunded. if i were still living in the state of Kansas, i would go to HR block and demand a full refund, but im just glad we are no longer there- they are Incompetent, ignorant, and dont know what they are talking about when it comes to home of record being in any other state- will NEVER go to HR block again, no matter where it is.
