boring place on Wednesday nights. Terrible service. Don't waste your time here, it is not worth it.

Worst service in NW 7/23/2010

The reviews all say to try a fish bowl drink- watch them make one, and it's 3/4 ice, mostly juice and cheap mixers with a splash of real alcohol in it, for WAY too much money for that little alcohol. Yes, they're large, no, they're not worth it. The karaoke stage is a joke, a tiny little area that's crowded. No real room for dancing or even socializing comfortably. At the bar, a server told me to back up because I was too close to her and she's claustrophobic. What the hell?? Why in the world is she working there then? She was extremely rude, and told me the place was way too crowded, and she hated working there. Well, then quit. The bartender making drinks took 20 minutes to finally get to me, and my drink tasted so terrible, I didn't even drink it. A friend drank it and I tried to go up to get something else, and waited a half hour before we all just left. Ridiculous! Pros: great crowd for the drunk and easily impressed Cons: the servers, crowded, no parking, terrible drinks, expensive more

this place is a nuisance to my neighborhood 8/11/2009

There are numerous fights and screaming/yelling drunk fools out in the wee hours of the night. I have seen various people coming and going out of the back door... this place gives me the creeps. Inside it's dark and seedy - which is good on some occasions - but I think this place has outworn its welcome. I have seen so many fights out of my apartment windows, I have seen so many drunk drivers pulling out of the parking lot - last night I saw many police cars, a fire truck, and an ambulance pulling someone away on a stretcher. I'll say it again, this place is a nuisance to my neighborhood. I don't suggest going there unless you want to get into some kind of trouble. more

Sticky & Unpleasant 6/23/2009

Broken seats, slap-dash service, and an atmosphere that reminds one of the date-rape basement of a frat house does not put the Gypsy in high regard for this critic. The once pleasantly seed Gypsy Joker biker bar circa 1978, has become a ghost of its former glory. Gone is any flavor of authenticity. Replaced by sloppiness and yuppies playing pool. I don't mind gentrification when it lead to quality, but the Gypsy's transformation had led nowhere. Pros: Convenient Cons: Too many to name. more

Staff is great, clientele are wastes of space 6/18/2009

Had such a unique experience with three men outside at closing time. I was waiting for a ride and had a conversation with one in particular who was hell bent on finding out my opinion regarding who was "my type" between the three of them. Once I made it clear that none of the douches were my type, I had the pleasure to hear the profound opinion of the biggest piece of ****. Apparently was a **** tease and my ***** was "smelly". I walked away quickly feeling sufficiently threatened not to mention completely disgusted for the mere fact these morons exist. Beware of these *****. They prove date **** is alive and kicking. Pros: staff Cons: customers more

nice place to drown in a fish bowl 3/7/2008

Two fights in one night...cheesy decor. Frat crowd, went across the street to Muu-Muu's, had a much better time. more

toilet mint 10/27/2007

If the smell of this place doesnt make you want to leave the service and the people that drink there will. Filled with novice drinking jocks and it smells like a toilet mint. Pros: none Cons: takes up too much space on 21st street more

TOP Oregon Chef 9/28/2007

Beau Hogge has become Gypsy's top chef, he brings a lot fexperence and knoledge of running a class restaurant, his grandfather in Alabama always knew Beau would make the Hogge family proud of him, he is a good father Pros: GREAT PLACE TO DINE Cons: NONE I FOUND more

Normal bar, nothing special 7/31/2007

Typical bar. Not trendy, not a dive. Just a good place to go for some drinks with friends. The drinks are reasonable, and service is pretty good. I've found that the service on the south side, is much better than the service on the north side. Not sure why that would be, but it's always been the case. more

Awesome Happy Hour, Food and Drink 6/3/2007

Great place to start off your night of bar hopping. Great staff: frinedly, helpful with drink ideas or thoughts, not too pushy or bothersome while enjoys time with your friends. Awesome happy hour menu and a drink list that never ends. Lots of off the wall drink combos that sound odd but are actually really good. Food is great and never takes long to be served. Not too expensive either. Low key enough to talk or with friends. Pros: Decore, Happy Hour Food and Drink, Service Cons: Parking, but hey, it's Portland! more

Another good happy hour place with outdoor seating! 3/18/2007

The happy hour menu just can't be beat. You can get fries with ranch AND a cheese quesadilla for two bucks each. It ends at 6:30 but our waitress put the order in for us even though we came right at 6:30. She was a super star, attentive and joked with us a bit. The food was excellent and on friday's the music is just 90's top hits and whatnot. Much better than the hip hop filled saturdays (unless that's your thing). Gotta love the fishbowl party drinks as well! I giant AMF with plastic monkeys and mermaids decorating the blue drink was just fabulous! (they are a bit spendy but that doesn't take away from the fun of sippin on one with your buds and super long straws) Pros: great service, excellent happy hour!, outdoor seating Cons: NONE! more

Fun food and drink 10/23/2006

Odd drink special turned out to be something fairly yummy, and worth a try. Good mac and cheese, although a bit stringy. I'd stay on the bar side rather than the restaurant side if given the choice. Our waitress was super nice and just attentive enough not to be annoying. Definately worth a try on 21st. Pros: Great service, specials Cons: Empty on a Saturday night more

crappy 7/7/2006

Love the service 8/28/2004

My girlfriends and I have a standing date at the Gypsy every other week. Zac is the best bartender in town!! There's always a drink in front of us as soon as we sit down. He checks in with us regularly, keeps a full beer in our hands and is super friendly!!! Thanks Zac - you're the best:). more

NW's most happenin' hangout 12/17/2002

The Gypsy is great! A happening place to meet, start out the night or make it a destination. The food is fantastic and the drinks ROCK! Great atmosphere, good service, I can't think of a better place to hang out. There's always something happening and it's always fun. Pros: Atmosphere, Drinks, food more

Parking 11/13/2002

They have good Martini's and you can actually find a place to park. more

Fun & Cool. Great food and Stiff drinks 9/18/2002

I am a frequent at the Gypsy! Portions are hefty! The wings are excellent, smothered in hot and spicy sauce, and NOT breaded! I suggest the oyster shooters, mozzarella sticks, calamari, BLTA sandwich, Dagwood Sandwich, Country Fried Steak, or Spicy Buffalo Chicken Sandwich. Everything is good and I've not ever received a small portion! Karaoke Tuesday nights! The Gypsy has reasonably priced and STIFF drinks! I reommend that you try it out! It has a cool "gypsy-esque" ambiance, with big wavy mirrors, cool murals of "shapes" on the walls, awesome steel and colored lighting with a huge bar! Sunday brunch is a great deal! Try their Mimosas and Bloody Mary's! Pros: Stiff Drinks, Cool decor!, Nice Staff Cons: Can get busy more

GROOVY!!! 7/25/2002

This place is wonderful, straight down to the seating, the staff, not to mention the drinks. Very hip place to hang out in NW. Would recommend to anyone. more

Hands down a great bar 7/17/2002

I dig the Gypsy. Must admit, I've never gone for dinner but have eaten the food which is quite a bit better than mere pub food. I just find the bar side to be perfect- dark, candlelit, friendly staff, always an entertaining crowd and great happy hour. Just went a few weeks ago with the girlfriend for the first time and she loved it too. Just very casual, unpretentious (unlike Oba and the like) and always a good time. There is usually someone making an ass out of themselves or getting tossed out- bonus for entertainment factor. Plus in a great part of town. more

GReat wed night hang out! 6/26/2002

Cheap beer, cute college boys, fun staff....who could ask for anthing more? The food is also yummy as are the fish bowl drinks.... Pros: cute boys, fun staff, yummy food Cons: not enough parking, not big enough more

  • In Short
The '50s kitsch theme takes center stage in the huge dining room, where young and old sit in sparkly vinyl booths. Dinner options include meat loaf, burgers and country-fried steak. The dark lounge in the next room is brimming with novice 20-somethings filling themselves with fishbowl drinks and one of 48 martinis. Hearty breakfast items like the Country Benedict--scrambled eggs and sausage gravy on house-made biscuits--can undo the previous night's damage excellently.
