A great dive - in the best sense of the word 12/14/2007

I discovered this place on my hunt for a real diner experience in SF and I loved it! Great atmosphere, made nice and kitchy by the excess of holiday decorations hung from nook and cranny. Our waitress was very friendly and our burgers were just what the doctor ordered on that chilly day. We're looking forward to many returns. Pros: Fun, easy going, kitchy setting and the burgers! Cons: Not open for lunch during the week more

My favorite! 1/31/2007

Grubstake is my favorite restaurant in town. The service is attentive and polite. The food is awesome and the and the milkshakes are like something out of a dream. the inside is quaint, but clean. it's open quite late, but I've never been there past 2am. So if you want a good meal and a comfortable atmosphere to eat it in try out the Grubstake. Pros: portions, quality, milkshakes, nice service more

Yummy 7/6/2006

I love this place, and the fact that it is open late!\r \r The food is super good and cheap. I love their burgers. Also I think it is the only Potugese place in town.\r \r Skip Mel's on your late nights out, and try this place for a change. Pros: Food, staff, open late Cons: Cash only folks. more

Love the setting! 3/4/2006

My favorite aspect of this place (after being open super late) is its setting. The decor is very quaint and original, and I'd imagine that during the day the restaurant would be pretty mellow. I went on a Friday night at 2AM, so this was not the case. We had the pork chops in white wine and it was fairly good, flavorful. The sides to the pork chops were not good. I also tried the jalapeno poppers: the cheese inside was very creamy, which more than made up for the lack of spicyness. I will definitely come back, solely for its open-late hours. Pros: open late, decor Cons: no credit card more

Great atmosphere, hit and miss food 10/7/2005

The atmosphere of this nostalgic cafe in an old rail care makes for a hit and miss menu. We dined here late one evening, exhausted after a long trip and looking for anything still opened that had hot food. A big bowl of portuquese kale soup sounded quite good, with a cold salad. We wished we had ordered the big burgers and fries, as they looked far better going by on the trays. The soup was only fair; the salad was terrible. Old tired lettuce with brown edges (a definate miss), but, the best, thick, white, ambrosia like blue cheese dressing I've ever had (a definate hit). We'll go back, but mostly for the cheerful service (I even liked the leering waiter who sat me), probably burgers and fries, and the charming building. Skip the salads, ask for the dressing to go and then try to recreate it. more

The Grubber 6/15/2005

This is my favorite late night dining establishment in the city. The food is great with tremendous service, not to mention the food is reasonably price. No matter what time you go into the Grubstake, there's always people in there enjoying themselves. The diner is not that big but it makes for it in coziness. Pros: Portuguese Dishes, Food, Value Cons: Size more

Late Night Good Eats 6/15/2005

Diner Style Cuisine and MeatLoaf like mama used to make. Ask Santos for the ""Fire Water"" and he will put grappa in your coffee. In my opinion the best cheesecake in town! Pros: Late Night, Portuguese Menu, Friendly Staff Cons: No Credit Cards, Wait after 2am. more

Yum! 6/15/2005

Great atmosphere and food! I recommend the homemade banana cheesecake. Good to know that there's a place you can go to when you get those late-night hunger pangs. more

All Portuguese & American 5/27/2005

We never leave after a ball game or a trip to the city without stopping at the Grubstake restaurante for a nice portuguese meal along with great wines and beer from Portugal. Fernando, Linda and the crew are are very friendly. Pros: Good Food, Great people, Good prices more

okay 5/17/2004

I came here after a night of drinks with some buddies and the food was okay. I've been wanting to try this place - I heard their burgers were pretty good. I ordered the mushroom burger. It wasn't anything special. The prices were okay. The burger was $6.25 but we had to order fries separately. No real compelling reason to come back except to try the Portuguese dishes which I heard were just ""okay"" too. Pros: hours Cons: nothing memorable more

Late Night Grub 10/14/2002

After a late night concert..re energize with total comfort food. This place has great breakfast, milk shakes, etc. Open late and very nostalgic atmosphere. Portugese Linguisa & Eggs are very good. more

Very unique! 9/28/2002

I knew there was something special to that little diner when I first saw it. It appears like a Route 66-style roadside diner with a lot of artistic flair. The atmosphere is cozy and comfortable. The food leaves diners to shame! Stuffed Bell Peppers and Mashed Potatoes. Mmmm. I got a delicious home style breakfast for $5. Also, the have a nice patio and they are open till 4am. Pros: Inexpensive, Great food, Unique look more

My #1 choice 8/9/2002

Grubstake is my first choice simply because I love their food. It is wholesome and delicious, it doesn't taste like typical diner food. The atmoshpere is wonderful and a bit cozy. more

Great Late Night Place 5/31/2002

On a recent trip to the Bay area, I had occasion to sample the GRUBSTAKE. We were taken there by a Cab driver, who claimed that he ate there often, and that we would not be disapointed. He spoke the truth. Good portions, friendly service, clean restrooms, great atmosphere. Old diner. As good as any we have back East, where diners are a tradition. I would highly recommend the Grubstake to any of my friends. Pros: Good Value, Open Late, Good Coffee more
