Editorial review from Citysearch 3/30/2014

Bottom line: Grace Tavern is a wonderful neighborhood bar -- Yes, I myself have been brusquely asked to move to a smaller table by the staff--BUT I have zero problem with that or them. They have to fit lots of people into a tight space and they do a great job at it. Sure, there are some self-important people (certain Penn undergrads, newly-arrived yups), who feel the customer is always right, not matter what. They will be offended at not being able to hold a table for 4 by themselves, ""just till my friends show up"" (an hour later), or when they get a look after putting on big headphones, opening up a lap top and parking for two hours on one drink. (PS-if you have to do that, leave ""rent""--ie, a massive tip--or go to Starbucks)\r \r Everybody else who wants good tasty bar food, an ever-changing choice of drafts and bottles, and a brisk, friendly staff--go to Grace and have a good time. If your friends are late, hang at the bar and you will easily surf into a ridiculous/horrifying/uplifting conversation, guaranteed. \r --mcget • trophy bikes philly more

Grace Tavern is a Rude, Unappreciative Joke of a Business 1/30/2011

I went to Grace Tavern last night and am just DONE with this place. Simply put, GRACE TAVERN DOES NOT APPRECIATE THEIR CUSTOMERS and you're bothering these idiots the second you walk in the door. Last night, for example, my buddy and I sat down at a small table in the back. We were "greeted" by some stone-faced, gum-smacking waiter who didn't utter A WORD to us. He just slammed a couple of menus on the table and that was our welcome I guess. We then proceeded to tell him that we were just having drinks, which seemed to SHOCK THE HELL out of this guy. He then told us, and I quote, "I'm moving you guys over there [to a table in the corner]." Again, no friendliness, no "if you don't mind" or anything like that; it was basically just a "Move it!" So anyway, we went to the table, the waiter brought us our drinks and then maybe twenty minutes or so went by. As usual at this place, no one EVER asked how everything was, whether we needed another round, etc. And this is very much the norm at Grace Tavern: you RARELY get service unless you wave someone down. They take close to no initiative in that respect. So at that point, we basically already had enough and didn't even bother ordering another round. We just paid for our first drinks and left. Again, I will not be frequenting Grace Tavern again. These idiots just don't get it. When there are SO MANY other places in town that are friendly, give good service, etc., why ON EARTH would I take my hard-earned money to a place like Grace Tavern? more

..Grace Tavern would be better off withot an a-hole...... 1/9/2011

...I wish there could less than one star... "Bartender", Tio has a chip on his shoulder a mile wide... Beware of the motherf8cker...but, not to worry...I will take him down......for us all.... more

Big Mistake 3/5/2010

If you like food that tastes bland, cold, and e-coli-ish then this place is for you. If you like beer that was selected by someone who knows nothing about beer then this place is for you. If you like creepy old bartenders with ponytails who touch you then this place is for you. Pros: Easy to leave Cons: Food, Drinks, Service, Pony Tails more

Just aweful 3/3/2010

The food was terrible. The service was terrible. The atmosphere was terrible. There was nothing good about this place. Don't bother. Try Resurrection up on 25th and Grays Ferry for a good meal. Pros: none Cons: bad service, bad food stale beer more

Stop..Don't do it! 4/25/2009

Well it took about 20 minutes for the bartender to come over and give me and my friend a drink and when he did he didn't even ask us if we wanted to see a menu. I am very disappointed in this place, we were looking for a new hangout. 2 THUMBS DOWN Pros: There are no pros Cons: This place is a dungeon and I been to few crappy bars more

The worst dining experience of my life 4/1/2009

Of the hundrers of offerings during Beer Week we decided to try Grace Tavern w/out of town guests. What a mistake. Neither the bar or dining area were crowded but we were unable to order a beer. Not an unreasonable expectation in a bar during Beer Week. The waiter initially ignored us then verbally attacked us & demanded that we apologize because we had tried to get his attention. It was so absurd that initially we thought he was joking, then he continued his demeaning rant until we left to spend our money elsewhere. Our sandwiches were served on rolls that were charred & blackened from the broiler. Why?? Food should never leave the kitchen looking that way. Philadelphia has so many wonderful pubs there is no need to go to Grace Tavern. Cons: Arrogant waiter, sub par food more

You gotta have the beans! 3/12/2009

I loved this place and will be going back! It's hard to get a seat either at a table or the bar because there simply aren't enough of them, but while you're waiting for something to open up you can enjoy some great beer. We had the fries, blackened green beans and jambalaya and they were all outstanding - even the fries! The blackened green beans are addictive and the jambalaya has great flavor and just the right amount of heat. Don't let any of the negative reviews stop you from trying this place. Don't get it wrong - it's a bar, bar and it's far from swanky and trendy, but if you go in with that in mind you will not be disappointed! Oh, and the staff was great - no one rude, nasty or blind to an empty pint glass! Enjoy! Pros: blackened green beans Cons: small more

skip this fake dive tavern 1/30/2009

I heard about this new pub on Philly dot com and wanted to try it out. My wife and I could not have been more disapointed. It was a Saturday night around 7pm and the place was not too busy. I stood by the bar for a few minutes and caught the bartenders attention after a 5 minute wait. He said to hang on a minute. He then proceeded to hang out with aquintences for another 5 minutes, and when he came back he poured other peoples drinks and ignored us completely. We decided not to stay for the drink or dinner. I do not mind waiting for a table for dinner, but I do not care to wait 15 minutes for a beer at an un-crowded dive bar. Maybe the food is good; I will never find out. Much better choices in the area for food and drink in my opinion. more

My second favorite bar 11/13/2008

Really great bar, if it wasn't for my deep abiding love of Sidecar this'd be my top. Really amazing selection of beer, but still some cheapees for the thrifty (2.25 PBR pounders). A cool staff that warm up to regulars. Very genuine decor. Great music. AMAZING food. Really a great place in the GHA. I'd strongly suggest avoiding it on weekends however, it's usually a mad house. The middle of the week is a pretty good time to go. Pros: great beer selection for all budgets, cool staff, great music Cons: gets really full on the weekends more

Subpar food, poor seating 9/9/2008

My boyfriend and I have been to most of the pubs in Philly, and we tried this one for the first time last night --it fell far below the mark. The menu looked good on paper, but the reality was quite unpleasant. The green beans were hard--not juicy--and they were salty and charred-tasting. (The ones at White Dog are delicious!) The dipping sauce they came with was entirely flavorless--we couldn't even tell what it was. The sausage sandwiches consisted of good sausage, a good roll, one flimsy piece of lettuce, and about a gallon of spicy mustard. There was so much mustard that you couldn't even taste anything else. The side salad of baby greens was fresh and generous, but the dressing on it was completely flavorless... it might as well have been water. We had tried to go once before, but every square inch of space was packed with people, so we couldn't get in. Some outdoor seating would improve the place immensely. Even Monday night when it was relatively empty, it was still VERY loud in there. The tables are so close together that you can hear every word from your neighbors three tables away. It was very chilly--I can overlook that as a fluke--but the restaurant is also always bizarrely dark, to the point where it's hard to read your menu. We decided it wasn't worth ever going there again. And that was halfway through our meal. And that was before we dashed out, jumping up and down to warm ourselves because we were chilled to the bone. Unfortunately, it was just not good : ( Pros: convenient location, reasonable prices Cons: bad food, noisy, not enough space, dark more

gastro-pub fare (tasty), rude staff 7/21/2008

They have tasty, large, juicy burgers, wide variety of domestic/import beer, belgian fries. rude, confrontational bartender EVERY time we go Pros: bugers, fries, green beans, price Cons: rude bartender every time we go more

Not so Nice 5/26/2008

I always hear about how terrific this bar is, but when I went the bartender was really barky and rude, and the fries are way too salty for my taste. Pros: Aesthetically Pleasing Cons: Mean Service more

Great neighborhood bar 10/2/2007

Their food menu is small, but everything on it is done well (especially the fries with the Monk's dipping sauce). They have a very nice selection of beer for reasonable prices with good seasonal choices on tap. The bartenders are knowledgeable and will always give good suggestions if you want to try something different or new. more

Great Beer, Great Service 9/6/2007

I've never had a bad service experience here, it's always been pleasurable. They have a great Trappiste beer selection, as well as other beers from around the world, and they make a wickedly good burger (I have never ordered anything else off the menu). Pros: Quick service, great beer, great burgers, reasonably priced Cons: None that I can think of more

More than just a tavern 6/19/2007

The food is amazing, arguably the best burgers in town and sausages that are to die for. The staff are the kind of people you're thankful to have run into at the bar and talked to all night. I feel like there's never been a bad night at grace. Reese, one of the bartenders, makes my nights feel well spent and the tall and gorgeous cook is my eye candy dessert. Pros: Beer selection, cajun menu, attractive and personable staff Cons: somewhat off the beaten path on 23rd and South st. more

Avoid it. 6/12/2007

If you like rude bartenders, this is your spot. Otherwise try the Yell'o Bar, just down the street or Ten Stone just two blocks away. Both offer better selection of food and drink and no rude bartenders. more

Surprisingly good local hang out! 5/17/2007

Make sure you go on nights of the week when Reese is working the bar. The food is cheap, quick to come out, and really tasty! Decent selection of beers and drinks. The atmosphere is really laid-back and comfortable. I recommend trying it if you're in the area! Pros: inexpensive and tasty food, quick and friendly service Cons: the bartender that isn't Reese more

Tasty food; great prices 8/10/2006

I went to Grace with a friend who lives in the neighborhood and was very impressed. The beer was reasonably priced, the burgers were absolutely mouth-watering (as were the fries and dip that accompanied them) and the Cajun green beans were delicious. We each had two beers, burgers, fries and beans for under $40. I'll be back! Pros: Great food, cheap drinks Cons: Smoky, dark atmosphere more
