Googie's Luncheonette - Cruelty to Waiters 5/20/2006

Not only is the food below average - dry, tasteless fries, overdone grilled cheese (who knew it was possible to over grill cheese?) but the owner made me boycott the restaurant. I've always found the wait staff a bit sullen, but on my final visit, I witnessed a waiter being so badly belittled by the restaurant manager that I was shocked he didn't quit on the spot. He was being yelled at, in front of everyone on the street, because the manager felt he wasn't clearing a table quickly enough. After the manager left, I asked the waiter if she always treated the waiters like that and whether I could perhaps say something to the restaurant owner. I was told she was the owner, and it was a family-run business, so nothing I could do. Therefore, I decided never to return. more

Googies Italian Diner 5/19/2006

At Googie’s, the classic grilled cheese starts with local Orwarsher’s bread and generous amount of cheddar cheese. Served with a hearty portion of shoestring fries, this heavenly sandwich is a great value at $6.75. This kid-friendly restaurant is usually packed with strollers and has plenty of outdoor seating. The salads are enormous if you want a healthier option. more

Not on my shortlist 5/18/2006

Unless I'm entertaining visitors who are attracted by its "authentic" diner appearance, I prefer to pass on Googie's for brunch or lunch options. The food, in general, just comes off as average to me, regardless of what I have tried. It's passable, but nothing is so stellar that I could actually remember what it is that I've consumed here. Probably an omelet or a sandwich (shrug). And this is why I don't understand the long lines of people waiting for a table at Googie's. more

Exactly what it's supposed to be 3/11/2006

Googies is little more than a glorified diner, but with slightly better food and atmosphere, I find it a good standby for the whole "We don't know what to eat, where to go" thing. their burgers are good, and their fries are excellent. A truly surprising standout is their delicate, perfect fried zucchini, and their array of milkshakes and other fountain rinks is great. During brunch this is Upper East Side Hangover Hell -- don't even bother trying to get a table. more

Nice place to get anything you want 1/13/2006

Googie's advertising as an Italian diner. It is just that. You can get anything you want any time of day and the food is always good. The prices are average, if not slightly overpriced, but the food is fresh and good. The waitstaff is fine - a mixed bag, but mostly good. There is a brunch menu, not a price fix, but they have a nice selection of omelets, sandwiches, and salad. I enjoy it! more

Googie's Italian Diner 11/6/2005

Googie's is the average diner, except it claims to be "Italian." Whatever that means, their menu is the same as any other. The food is decent. Their french fries were really thin and weird. more

A mix of everything - Ok but not greaet 8/15/2005

A wide mix - basic Italian through burgers, omlets, etc. Good food but not anything special. Great for the kids - lots of fries, good desserts. Noisy, crowded. I wouldn't go out of my way to go here but it's not terrible. Service is good - when it gets crowded it can slow down but they still move you out of there fast. more
