Excellent Jamaican Oxtail Stew, Rice and Peas, and Cabbage 9/8/2011

Excellent Jamaican Oxtail Stew, Rice and Peas, and Sauteed Cabbage! This is a cafeteria-style fast food Jamaican restaurant that is very tasty, satisfying, and inexpensive. Portions are generous; the people are really nice. We arrived shortly before closing last Sunday and found the Brown Stew Chicken was a little dry and overcooked, but tasty. The Beef Patties can be hit-or-miss depending on how long they have been sitting under the heat lamps. However, all 3 times that we have ordered Oxtail Stew, it's been wonderful. People rave about the Curried Goat, but I cannot comment since I do not care for goat or lamb. This is a 'cheap ethnic dive' (my favorite kind of restaurant) - do not go expecting a nice atmosphere or fancy food. Enjoy it for what it is. more

The Triangle Area's #1 Caribbean Restaurant 7/30/2010

I am so excited to finally find a good Caribbean restaurant in the Triangle area! Golden Krust (part of a restaurant chain started in New York) offers standard Caribbean fare (Stew Chicken, Rice and Peas, Curry Chicken, Curry Goat, Oxtails), in addition to other pan-Caribbean items not found in other restaurants in the area (fresh baked hard dough bread, beef patties, ackee and saltfish, and roti). For those foodies that remember Trinibago restaurant , the 2 chefs responsible for the food Trinibago was known for are now the main chefs for Golden Krust. I love the general menu (especially the oxtail stew), but I get the mild beef patties if I want something small (or really cheap). Items don't go above $12 or so and they even have a $2.99 ""Recession special"" that is the curry or stew chicken with any of the sides! The atmosphere is nice- it is bright, open, and cheerful. You can sit down and eat, but it is designed ""cafeteria-style"" so a lot of people do take-out. Free wifi, though, so I usually stay and get work done. Located in the North Duke Shopping Center (Roses, Blockbuster). Come and support this great restaurant! Pros: Food, Service, Price Cons: ?? more
