Good food at a great price 2/3/2010

I love this place. It's on a very quaint street, and the atmosphere is great. The service is good and it is inexpensive for center city. This isn't the best italian in the city, but it isn't priced like it either. I will be going back! Pros: Atmosphere, service, price Cons: None really more

great 7/12/2008

This place is under new ownership with new menue, so earlier reviews can be ignored. I'm not a really big fan of Italian food and have only been to three or four other Italian places in the city. That said, Valentino is by far the best of them. Everyone I was with was impressed by everything we had. Service was excelent also. The only bad thing I can say is that the menu is small. But what they do, they do very well. more

Don't waste your time! 11/23/2007

Walked into the restaurant and it was empty (first sign that it would not be good). Service was ""snotty!"" And the food was even worse...almost not edible! We ordered the mussels in a saffron both...there was no broth...it was mussels on a plant, very dry. The special entree, Chilean sea bass, was slimy! The pasta would have been ok but it was served cold. Never again! Pros: Location Cons: Food, service more

Don't believe the hype 9/16/2005

Overall disappointing. The meals didn't live up to expectations based on the descriptions. Dinner started off on an especially bad note with tasteless bread and flavorless olive oil. The appetizer of mozerella tomato, roasted peper, prosciutto, arugula salad had good mozerella, but the tomatoes were inedible hot house tomatoes that were so unripe they couldn't be cut; and this was in the beginning of September - prime time for ripe local tomatoes!!! The two entrees, orrecheitte with shrimp and crab ravioli, were bland. The service was friendly, Italian and helpful. There are better choices. more

There are better places... 6/24/2004

The atmosphere of this place was promising. Really charming space. Exposed brick, hanging vines from the ceiling, beautiful music. Unfortunately the food did not match the decor. Our waiter told us the specials, each item sounded better than the next. However, most of the dishes were bland. Also, when we ordered one of the salads on the specials list, we didn't ask the price. We got the check and it was $15!!! That put the nail in the coffin. Pros: decor Cons: , high prices more

Redeemed itself.... 6/4/2004

As a frequent patron of all the Center City BYO's, I have become a bit picky, particularly with Italian ones. Therefore, the first time I ate at Valentino, I walked away disappointed. The set-up of the restaurant is adorable, comfortable, and welcoming. However, the food wasnt what I expected. The chicken dish was not too fresh, and the seafood was dried out. Yet when I looked for a place to host a large group of 12 at close, reasonably priced BYO, I decided to give Valentino another try. This time the food was excellent, the pasta fresh and sauce tasty. The service was mixed - the manager and owner(?) was wonderful, kind, and very attentive, meeting the needs of our large group so well. But one of the server had a peculiar short attitude and one buser was horribly rude. Despite the few wrinkles, it was a great evening. more

a great time had by all 5/12/2004

Valentinos was a delightful way to end the day. The menu was plentiful and the specials made it hard to choose. My husband and I had a cold antipasta that was outstanding. The grilled seafood appy was delicious and garlicy, The portabellos were amazing. I had rack of lamb. What a treat! My husband had a chicken dish that was average. A bit too bland. Dessert was fabulous. John the chef was a delight as were all the staff we came in contact with. We enjoyed ourselves so much that we booked a party for 40 in three weeks. I know my guest s will love everything as we did. Pros: delicious food, lovely atmosphere, nice ambiance more

TERRIBLY RUDE 2/18/2004

Surly waitstaff, mediocre entres, horrible dessert and a very unfriendly place for group dinners. To add more insult to injury, they calculate a 20% tip on TOP of tax not just food...they didn't deserve a 2% tip, given how rude they were to my friends and me (we were a group a mothers enjoying a monthly ""mom's night out""). What a horrible way to spend our only free evening a month. Plus it was relatively expensive for a BYOB. I will never go back there again. Pros: Decor Cons: , Food/Dessert, Price more

Awesome 9/13/2003

I have been to this place four or five times already and will continue to go. Living in the city, I have been to many of the area BYOBs and this is the best one. The dishes are simple but delicious. The service is fun, friendly, and efficient. It is one of the best places to go for dinner in the city without maxing your credt card. I highly reccommened it. And whoever wrote that bad review has no idea what they are talking about. more

Charming 3/21/2003

Loved everything about this place - host is charming, service was warm and accommodating. Entrees outshined the appetizers, but relatively simple offerings were done to perfection. Desserts were not unusual but were all excellent. It's a bit tight on the seating, but the decoration and overall ambience and location make it a great pre-Kimmel place. We already have plans to return. Pros: room charm, service, food Cons: tight seating more

Great little BYO 2/24/2003

I just went to this restaurant and thoroughly enjoyed it. The food was wonderful and very fresh and innovative. The service was great, and the waitstaff was very friendly and funny - they even offered us shots of Sambuca at the end of our meal. I think the person who gave this place a ""1"" rating either has no taste, or works for another BYO in the area and is trying to defame the reputation of this restaurant. The crab ravioli he/she described as hard I found to be fresh, homemade and tasty. My appetizer of buffalo mozzarella, prosiutto, roasted peppers, and arrugula was equally pleasing. The prices are unbeatable, and I always love being able to bring my own wine to accompany dinner. The atmosphere is great as well - rustic italian decor and italian mucic. All in all, a wonderful place. I will definitely be back. Pros: Take Reservations, Inexpensive, BYOB Cons: None! more

Great neighborhood BYO 9/22/2002

Excellent Italian BYO near the Kimmel Center. Very reasonably priced, nice atmosphere, excellent service, and very good food. The pastas were excellent, the salads fresh and creative, and the homemade cheesecake was one of the best I've had in years. This was our first visit and we're definitely going back soon. Pros: byo, inexpensive, close to Kimmel Ctr more

Excellent new BYOB! 9/5/2002

I went to Valentino last night, although nervous because of the 1 rating that someone provided. Come on now, a 1?? I thought valentino was excellent. Started off with the antipasto, which I split with my friend. It was so good that we ordered another. The bread was excellent! Nice amount, sourdough tasting italian bread nice and soft along with little garlic cheese bread cubes that were delicious. Then moved on to porcini risotto that was amazing. Right consistency, excellent earthy taste with the right amount of parmesan. My friend had the gnocchi which were light in a nice marinara with a bit of zip. The size of the restaurant was perfect for a BYOB and the staff was helpful, our waitress was actually really sweet. Pros: great food, quaint ambience, inexpensive more

family spot 8/19/2002

This is my family's favorite Italian BYOB. The service is friendly and personal, the food is great. The veal chop is outstanding. Pros: excellent food, good value, friendly atmosphere Cons: a bit crowded more
