Bobby's Joyful Dining Experience 7/5/2008

I recently went to Gioia Mia with a few friends of mine for dinner, and I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food and the service I received. My friend had suggested I try Gioia Mia, and I do not think she did it justice when she told me about it. The food was amazing, and my friends were very happy with my decision to go there. The quality far exceeded my expectations, we were all very happy. I strongly suggest that you give it a try, if you have not already. Fabrizio Pace is a genius with food, and his talents extend to ice sculpture as well. I promise that you will be as happy as I am to have found this restaurant. Do not believe my word, check it out for yourself. Enjoy it, and please make sure to post your comments as well, it is only fair to spread the word so that everyone can enjoy this delicious experience. So please express your opinion about the quality of the Gioia Mia experience as I have, and please be sure that you are able to appreciate the quality of this authentic Italian cuisine. You will be able to understand the true quality of the authentic Italian dining experience after you visit Gioia Mia. Please enjoy the authenticity of all of Gioia Mia's food. more

Loud and rude 1/27/2008

My husband and I got there at the reserved time and had to wait in the cold doorway for 20 minutes before we were seated. We weren't even acknowledged for more than 15 minutes. We were told we had to wait because another party had gotten there really late. So WE had to suffer??? Were seated next to a party of 8 who were so loud and drunk that we couldn't hold a conversation. Waited another 10 minutes before our drink order was taken, and then another 10 minutes before our main order was taken. We were given a bowl of oil and vinegar with some bread, but no plates to put the bread on and no spoon to scoop the oil. It was almost an hour before we got our entrees. My husband rated the caesar salad as average, as was my soup. He raved about the pork, but the gnocchi wasn't anywhere near as good as I've had at many other restaurants. Dessert --- apple tarts --- was good, but we weren't offered coffee or tea to go with it. The tab came to almost $120.00 (we had 3 alcoholic drinks between us). For that price, we could have eaten at Susanna Foo or one of the other 4-star restaurants in Center City. If you like your restaurants extremely (and I do mean EXTREMELY) loud, your service slow, and your food so-so, this may be the place for you. We won't go out in 20-degree weather to eat there again. more

Very disappointing 9/25/2007

I was motivated to join Citysearch just so I could review the disappointing experience we had at Gioia Mia last night. The food was uniformly bland and boring (and I have lived in Northern Italy, so I know the difference between good Italian and Olive Garden), and the service was absolutely horrendous. Our water glasses were empty through most of our dinner and when we finished our first glasses of wine, no one ever offered us a second. The hostess did ask us three times (two of them AFTER we were seated) for the name on our reservation. Our waiter visited our table once during the night, leaving the bussers to provide the rest of the service. Our empty dessert plates sat for at least twenty minutes before anyone cleared them and brought us the check. My friend and I have worked in the service industry and are always good tippers but by dessert we had agreed that this merited 15% at best. So we were extremely frustrated to discover that our tab came with a 20% service charge already included. Guess that's a good way to guarantee decent tips for bad service, but it also guarantees neither of us or anyone we know will ever be back there. Pros: Easy to get a reservation during restaurant week Cons: Bland food, terrible service more

Previous guests must be used to mediocre cuisine. Perhaps Olive Garden is fitting to their palate. 5/11/2007

Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, this little breath of fresh air is packed with regulars. BE SURE to call ahead.Sure the service is not quite Michelin, the food compensates exponentially. As a recent transplant and Patricia Brooks disciple, this unassuming restaurant is the closest thing to true regional Italian cuisine that I have experienced in the Philadelphia area. If you have ever traveled to Italy and actually eaten outside of anyplace that has a menu in five languages, it is a surprising delight and an absolute refreshment to the gastronoimic standard of this city. Shrimp parmigiana or prozoot anyone???? How 'bout some gavadeal or gobbigol (cavatelli and capicollo to a real italian). I spend at minimum $50 every night for dinner, and excluding Da Silvano, Gioia Mia in Philadelphia is the only place where I'd love to spend more. If you truly know the light, fresh, and flavorful taste of authentic Italian cuisine, this is your spot. Otherwise, I heard Olive Garden has unlimited salad and beverage refills. I heard their white zinfandel is good as well. Buon Appetito, e mangia bene.... more

Bad Service, Bad Food 5/1/2007

Some old friends and I went to this restaurant during Restaurant Week. We had 10:30 reservations on a Saturday night, since that was the only reservation available. We get there at 10:15, and there are many tables open. We are told to have a seat upstairs at the bar and we weren't seated until 11:15 after asking many times why we couldn?t just sit down at one of the many empty tables. Once seated the food took another 30 minutes to arrive and it was AWFUL. If you're looking for good, authentic Italian food, this is not the place to go. Besides the service being horrible, the food was less than fabulous. Sad to say, I've had better Italian food at Olive Garden. Don't Go Here!!! Pros: Close to the Comedy Club Cons: bad food, and bad service more

Keep on walking 4/10/2007

We were a group of 6 on a Saturday evening, ready to enjoy some awesome food and catch-up with each other. The table they sat us at was in an awkward place, so the person sitting at the end was always in the path of the wait staff, when asking to move - it was a no-can-do however the place was not packed at all while there. The apps came out and were great, antipasta, scallops and sausage. The meals followed with the table enjoying lobster ravioli, filet mignon, chicken, and seafood risotto. The meals were nothing to write home about (were blah), any italian restaurant would be able to create these meals and probably better. We get together a lot and try different restaurants around the city, no one of us said to another, ""ooo you have to try this"". To top off the evening, the lack of service was annoying, never asking about more drinks, if we were enjoying the meal - nothing. Once we were done, we waited a good 20 minutes before we had to ask the waiter for our check. My personal advice this a place you could just walk passed, if you want to meet someone for a drink go for it at the upstairs bar, if you are looking for a great italian meal then keep on walking. Pros: parking lots all around Cons: Service, food, very cold atmosphere upstairs more
