For a small restaurant like Ginger, they offer too many choices. It makes me wonder if they have the freshest fish in the menu as claimed by some of the reviews here. Further more...

One of the best Sushi Places... 8/28/2008

I love this place. It's not super pricey and the food is delicious....just so fresh. I am a regular here! I would highly recommend this place. Try their shrimp tempura rolls and their crab salad appetizer....delish! Pros: Everything Cons: Overcrowded at times... more

always a hit...never a miss 8/13/2008

I've frequented the place for over a year. Can't believe that each time I go the sushi is always fresh, great cuts of seafood. I really enjoy the spicy rolls and yes...the peanut butter too. Can't seem to skip the kimchee squid appetizer either. Service is great. Very neighborhoody. I feel like I'm cheating on a lover if I go elsewhere for sushi. more

the Best Spicy tuna rolls I've had 5/16/2008

Ginger is a small place but their sushi is high quality. The best is the spicy tuna roll, which is just perfect. There are many other fancy looking and great tasting rolls and plates. Absolutely love this sushi restaurant. I just wish they were open Sundays..! more

Ginger gave us a great night 1/28/2008

I saw the previous negative reviews and felt I had to speak up. I had been here several times over the past 3 years. Brought my wife-to-be this last Saturday night. She had never had sushi and was apprehensive, so I figured this was the spot. The two appetizers we got (wasabi pork, sashimi in wasabi soup) were great, and really spicy. We ordered severals rolls, mostly spicy tuna. Each was great. My fiancee was not a fan of the banana in one of the rolls, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. We went early so there was only one other group there. The service was top-notch, the beer was cold, and the fish was fresh. No complaints from me, and I'm excited that my fiancee wants to go back again soon. Pros: Great rolls, solid appetizers, great atmosphere Cons: $100 bill for two people, wasabi pork was TOO spicy more

Too Many Choices 9/21/2007

Not too great 8/3/2007

Too Many not that special rolls, needs improvement on their sauces, take out some of those mediocre rolls. Nice decor though. Pros: nice feel Cons: avg food more

THE PEANUT BUTTER SUSHI IS AWSOME AND CREATIVE!! NOT EVERYONE MAY LIKE IT BUT NOT EVERYONE LIKES CALIFORNIA ROLL EITHER! 7/18/2007

This place is amazing!! There sushi is top notch and some of their creations are so unique and wierd to the sushi world that you may think yuk!! peanut butter in my sushi? He don't knock it till you try it, and if you don't like it thats ok it doesn't make this a bad sushi place. You can always go to teriyaki boy and have some fast food sushi. People who really appreciate good sushi and eat it alot will know right away that this is a great place!! I highly recommend GINGER. Why don't you be the judge. more

Peanut butter 6/22/2007

There's so much rave about this PB thing. Inventive roll but just a tablespoon too much of Skippy. Trying too much too little. Too many special rolls which they aren't really special. Hate that teriyaki. more

A sure thing -- Excellent 2/23/2007

This place is fantastic. The fish is always very fresh and tasty. The menu is interesting with some daring and unique rolls, but also with the general sushi staples. And the service is always so friendly and accomodating. Its always such a pleasant atmosphere. I see that some people have attacked some of the rolls that Ginger uniquely offers. Well here is some general advice for these reviewers --- Order with common sense....if you don't like peanut butter -- then don't get a sushi roll with peanut butter on it. I for one enjoy the peanut butter rolls......but not too much -- I prefer to share a roll, because the pb can overwhelm the taste of the fish. If you like spicy tuna..., you have to try the Muse or the RedHead. For the more traditional sushi roller......go for the Queen, which combines some great pieces of fish. The tuna tartare app is awesome and its a huge portion. The White tuna sashimi is also an excellent app. Fresh & tasty fish, interesting rolls, great value with large portions.....you just can go wrong, and the staff/service is always very friendly and attentive. I have been here many many times, and it has yet to disappoint. Just hope it doesn't get too popular.....I like it as a EV neighborhood kind of place Pros: Fresh, unique menu, friendly service Cons: Small dining room more

Best Sushi/Sashimi Outside of Nobu 2/8/2007

Ginger has to be the best deal in NYC. It sports the freshest sushi/sashimi which is creatively prepared. The Yellow Tail & White Tuna exceed even Nobu but Ginger is easily 1/10th the price. Even the little details like the miso soup are treated with care (& it's grreat btw!!). Ginger is a real charmer as it's a labor of love of the owners & the wonderful staff. You can eat a lot at Ginger, have a saki & still pay only $30 with generous tip. It's small so if you're going with a large group make a reservation. Ginger is one of the great things about the East Village! Pros: Food, atmosphere, price, service Cons: none!! more

Sorry... but not a fan of Skippy on my sushi!!!! 1/21/2007

Seems like all the reviews rave about the ""unique"" rolls the restaurant offers. Yes, there are plenty of unique rolls.... but a tablespoon of peanut butter does not belong on sushi! I only tried it b/c of the positive reviews I read. However, if you're curious but don't think it sounds good, don't try it! Why? Because it does not taste good. I had to scrape each sushi roll clean of peanut butter in order to eat it!!! more

Sushirific 12/30/2006

Sushi and a small decor equal a nice neighborhood establishment where folks can enjoy quality food and service for reasonable prices. The place is not cheap mind you, but thats what most people should expect out of sushi that is prepared well. Pros: Sushi, Service Cons: Prices, Small Interior more

So-so! 6/16/2006

Sushi was just so-so. Special rolls are not special except for a couple. I loved the ikamaru however. more

Not so special 6/2/2006

They offer a lot of special rolls. Not so special except for a few. They don't even have red snapper, fluke or uni. Definitely not the place for the adventurous sushi lover. more

Superb 2/5/2006

Since our first visit there just after they opened a few years ago, Ginger has been our favorite restaurant. The dishes are inventive and fun but rely on basic good quality: consistently fresh ingredients, huge butter-like sushi/sashimi cuts, and reasonable prices. The service is wonderfully unpretentious and familial. Though the menu includes some unorthodox offerings (a peanut butter roll, for instance), the classics are pure and great--we've never had better sushi anywhere, including Japan. And do have fun with the funky rolls and appetizers--we especially recommend the White Tuna Sashimi (with a wasabi sauce), Crispy Tuna Tartare, and Dynamite appetizers; the Triple Don main dish; and friends who are sukiyaki connoisseurs said that Ginger's is one of the best they've had. If you make a reservation for a less-crowded week night, Ginger is a great place to bring a group. We've enjoyed more than a few mirthful birthday gatherings there. more
