My family and I stumbled onto Gennaro

We have eaten here a couple of times, usually because other North End restaurants were full, and have had OK food. For the price, you can definitely find a better meal. On our vis...

Great for V-day 2/13/2006

No-one in my office knew the place...but I thought that it would still be worth a try and it was worth the visit. Dinner started with some red wine and an ample serving of bread and butter. The house salad was large, crisp and clean, with my dressing on the side, as I had asked. It was basically tomatoes, carrots and lettuce, but that did the job. We didn't have any appetizers, but probably should have. They looked delicious as they were being carried by. We had the veal or chicken debate and the veal won. Both the veal marsala (his) and veal parmesan (mine) were tender and delicious. The portions were just about the right size and came with a small bowl of Ziti in a red sauce. The service was impeccable and the ambiance was perfect. It isn't as fancy as many other north-end places, but it's old world style atmosphere makes up for it. Have the spumoni for dessert and roll yourself home. more

Owner Message

  • Marisa Iocco, Boston's only Italian-born female chef, salutes Italian-American food at Gennaro's 5 North Square Restaurant in the North End with a menu she calls MangiAmerica ( "Eat, America" ).

MangiAmerica celebrates the dishes that are the mainstays of the Italian-American table. Marisa pays homage to the soulful hominess and evocative flavors of italian-American cooking.

Because this is food that so often conjures up memories of personalities and places now departed, she has recreated these dishes as scrupulously- and reverentially- as possible. Sunday gravy is simmered for hours and ladled over house-made fresh macaroni. The mozzarella is produced locally. The fish is hand selected daily from the fishmonger. Some dishes are only available family-style-deliberately intended to be shared with and enjoyed by loved ones. (857) 250-0756
