Liked pink sauce on shrimp and spinach penne. Also Manicotti with marinaria great. Italian sausage not worth the extra. Bread was too garlicky! more

Viva Fred's Italiano Rest.! 7/2/2010

Love this place - Italian dishes with a hint of herbs/spices, which makes it unique versus the Italian restaurants that slather lots of cheeses and sauces. It makes you feel like you're dining at home. The prices won’t bust your budget. Excellent wine list, but the vintages is what you may want to ponder about. The staff is extremely friendly, timely & knowledgeable. You may have to ask your waiter/ess to repeat the specials again, but then again that’s a lot of verbiage to remember anyways. I'd bring my family, friends, and even co-workers back there anytime! Pros: Fresh Parmesano! more

Good Fresh Italian Food 7/1/2010

I have to say, after going to this place a few times, I decided I really like it.. I have my fav. items on the menu.. Marsala Chicken, Eggplant Parm, Chicken Parm, Ribeye Steaks, and chops.. Caprese Salad and great calamari... Its just such a chill place, with a good all-round menu.. Its small, cozy, and when it gets busy, has a great vibe through the dining room... The prices are not cheap.. but not expensive either.. apps, salads, and pastas are all under 10 bucks and their entrees are prices appropriately.. I find the owner to be a very nice guy, slicked back hair, trying to look the part.. He makes his way around the dinning room smiling and chatting with customers on occasion, you can tell this place has some soul and has been around for 25 years plus.. with the same folks running it. All in all.. a nice family style Italian rest. with good wine, and fresh pasta.. Pros: Great Food, Good Prices, Friendly Staff... Cons: Alfredo too creamy.. hard to find more

terrible restaurant 12/5/2009

Service also an issue lots of playing around goofing around not attentive to the customer not very professional at all.And to top it off the price is very overpriced for frozen Italian food. And not amusing to see the older man and waiters playing grab ass with each other when i needed service more

Mediocre food, covers neighborhood with advertising 10/13/2009

I visited this restaurant several months ago with a few friends and found the food to be mediocre and way overpriced for the quality. When it came time to pay the bill, it took an HOUR for them just to process it. Apparently nobody on staff that night knew how to split a bill? The final straw came today when I noticed that every car in the local neighborhood had to-go menus placed on the windshields, and dozens of them were on the ground. I absolutely will not patronize businesses that use SPAM to ostensibly attract customers. Cons: Overpriced, incompetent staff, annoying advertising more

Overpriced Mediocre Italian Food 5/16/2008

This looked like a great neighborhood eatery and it's always packed so we figured it'd be great. We started with the calamari, which tasted slightly like flour. My husband's meal was a spicy pasta with italian sausage...the sauce reminded me of Chef Boyardee. I ordered the gnocchi with creamy pesto. The gnocchi looked strangely similar to the kind I make regularly at home. We both tried a different wine by the glass which were good enough. Our total bill with tip came to about $62.00. For this price, we expected much better quality. We wished we would have gone to Carrabba's and shared a meal instead. The tables were a little too close for comfort ... felt like we were in the way of the waiter traffic the entire time. The service was pretty quick. The highlight, I'm sad to say, was the fresh warm bread. We won't be returning, even for take-out. Pros: parking, fresh warm bread, BYOB Cons: food, seating more

Cozy neighborhood place, BYOB 4/14/2008

I recently visited Fred's and noticed that they changed their menu. They eliminated some of their great dishes like the baked ravioli, so I was a little disappointed. Their other pasta dishes and their pizza are still really good and we love the fact that it is a BYOB place (wine only). The place is pretty cozy and the tables are very close to each other, so I do not recommend this place for big groups. Be sure to be part of their rewards program because they have pretty good deals, like a free birthday dinner. Pros: BYOB, Ambience, Food Cons: Not good for large groups more

Mom and pop italien 11/24/2006

Another little hole in the wall restaurant. Very busy at lunch time with Med Center crowd. Very good authentic italien food with fast service. Pros: Great food Cons: too small for the crowd they get - authentic packing of the crowd in true european fashion more

Just like the North East 8/25/2006

This restaurant has great Italian food and a great atmosphere. True Italian cuisine. Very cozy. The portions are just right. I love it when the owner is one of the cooks. That is when you know the food is prepared right! I compare it to Italian restaurants in New Jersey or New York. I highly recommend Fred's! more

Great ambience! 7/26/2006

This place is romantic and serves excellent food. The restaurant is usually packed (especially during lunch hour). They have great Country Crock Honey Butter they serve with the complementary bread. The eggplant and manicotti are a must try! Pros: Ambience, food, service Cons: Small parking lot, wait time for table (always busy) more

I love FRED'S!! 3/23/2006

I love this place. It's so cozy and the food ROCKS!!! more

Great place, great food. 2/21/2006

I question the people that didn't like Fred's. For the area available, the service is great. Tiny place, quick effecient service--they don't bow and scrape, but they're responsive and accurate. The food is genuine. They have scungili, for Pete's sake. Find that at most places. Real deal here folks, and a great value for your dining dollar. (Real veal, for those of us un-PC enough to want it.) Pros: efficient service, extensive menu, great value Cons: no reservations more

Great Food 10/4/2004

The food is WONDERFUL!!! And the staff is great!!! Recommend for everyone to try. more

Not recommended 5/13/2004

Unfriendly staffs. The places is very congested. The food seem to pre-cooked days before and now reheated prior to being served. Waiter is stingy on napkins supply requests. I would not recommened for large family eating out or romantic date dinner. Pros: close to medical cen., close to rice village, spacoious parking Cons: , unfriendly staffs, severly congested more

Nice Little Restaurant 3/25/2004

I am not sure why anyone would give this restaurant a bad review. My boyfriend and I found it while out taking a drive in the neighborhood. We both fell in love with it. The price is very reasonable, the service is great, and in my opinion, the food is wonderful. more

cozy Italian cafe 10/19/2003

We used to visit this restaurant back in the early 90's as Rice students. Fred's is still dishing up good pasta at a reasonable price. Our favorite is the fiery arribiata sauce, but I've never had something here I didn't like. more
