I've worked with Frederick Lesort at one of his other ventures and he still owes me money from that. While he still goes around opening new places and doesnt pay the employees he owes money too. Be careful when you tip, the staff may never see it. Pros: Great Staff Cons: Onwer Frederick Lesort doesn't pay more

Best tuna tartare in the city..... 3/2/2009

If it were up to me, I'd order everything on the menu which is why I like to go with a group of friends so we can order a variety of dishes and share. Everything is so delicious! I always order the tuna tartare...always! It's the best I've had throughout my dining experience in NYC. It also helps to have a goodlooking waiter, well dressed and clean to serve you. The ambience is nice and cozy and there's always a 'welcome' and 'see you soon' waiting at the door for you. The entire staff is friendly and warm and always smiling. No restaurant service is perfect and that's why I gave them 4 stars but they're pretty damn close. Keep it up Fredericks Downtown. With a menu so delicious and a staff so friendly and warm, I'll always come back. more

I've been here perhaps a few dozen times over the years and loved it every time. Only once was the food just above average but I'll overlook that as every other time it's been exceptional. While it's on the expensive side, the food is great, the service has always been excellent, and I enjoy bringing dates and guests here. This is the place to go for pre-symphony dinner but make sure you have reservations. Pros: food.service more

awesome food 11/9/2008

Yes it is a little stuffy and pretentious but the food is good, especially the meat dishes and they have a pretty good wine list. This is a good place for business lunches and diners - that way you can write off or get reimbursed the $100+ your meal is going to cost. Pros: food, wine list Cons: slow service more

Good food, but detached service 8/2/2008

It was always Carrie Bradshaw's live-long dream to live in Paris. She imagined herself luxuriously shopping in Louis Vitton, sipping coffee in cute French cafes, and smoking outside as she admired the Eiffel Tower. And towards the end of the series, when she started dating Aleksandr Petrovsky, she got the chance to move to Paris. At first, she was ecstatic. But after living there for a little bit, she found herself lonely and wishing for the warmth of New York City and her friends. Eating at Frederick's Downtown is a similar experience - the food and atmosphere is unbelievably great, but it is lacking the warmth and welcoming experience of that many other NYC restaurants provide. The service seems a little detached and aloof. Otherwise, I would recommend the Tuna Carpaccio with Eggplant Caviar, Toasts Point, Soy-Sesame Emulsion. Single-handedly the best dish of all, which includes all the main dishes. more

It's a crap shoot on the kind of French restaurant you'll get. Was very pleased with the more relaxed atmosphere found here. Everything was great - the service, the food (desserts to die for) and the drinks. Highly recommend. more

Worst Experience in New York 5/31/2008

This was the single worst dining experience I have ever had in New York (and I live here!). The waitress took 25 minutes TWICE to bring us drinks. The table next to us broke a glass on the floor and they never came to sweep up the glass. We finally complained about everything and they said one of our drinks would be complimentary, and alas, when the bill came, nothing was gratis. Waitstaff so dense. Hate this place. more

The Chef has done a great job with the menu 3/20/2008

I had the opportunity to eat at Fredrick's Downtown last night. The food was delicious. My understanding is that the head chef took over about a year ago, and has done a great job changing some of the menu items and creating a better eating experience. I started off with the Mushroom Truffle soup. I really like mushrooms and mushroom soup, but this dish was a step above any mushroom soup I have ever had. Great does not even start to describe it. My wife had the French Onion soup, and liked it as well. I had the encrusted pork chop and enjoyed it. The seasoning was just right, and it was done just right. My wife had the scallops, and while I am not a big scallop fan, these were delicious. They had really nice seasoning and were cooked in pieces of bacon, which gave them an excellent flavor. I had the house cabernet with dinner, and it was a really nice wine (not too sweet and not too dry). We tried several desserts, which were all delicious. The service was quick and very friendly. I highly recommend giving Fredrick's Downtown a try. The menu is different enough that it sets it apart from other NY establishments, but it is still easy to find something for every taste and appetite. more

Very Pleasantly Surprised 1/30/2008

Although I have lived near Frederick's for awhile, I would have never gone until a friend invited me to dinner. The ambience and energy immediately struck me, with their authentic French flair. Moreover, the food was fantastic. The truffle soup was excellent and the braised short ribs were perfectly done, elevated from a lowly cut to a delicacy. Dessert was also quite good. more

I went here grudgingly a few weeks ago for a birthday dinner thinking it would be stuffy with an annoying crowd like it's UES relative can be. I was very pleasantly surprised. It was not too crowded or loud, we had great, attentive service, and our food was wonderful. The crudite platter was a nice healthy option for the table and the meat and cheese plates were fantastic to share as well. I had a delicious white fish for my entree, and my dining companions raved about their steak. The wine list is not especially long, but they have several good options and many good bottles at reasonable prices. All in all, it was a great experience and I definitely plan on going back. Pros: Good plates for sharing, great location Cons: Can get euro-trashy on weekends more

I love to try new places with my husband. It looked cozy, so we did. I just want to start by saying we eat out alot....The place is crammed with about 10 tables more than it can fit, so it certainly cant be romantic, when you cant put a napkin on your lap without saying "excuse me" to your neighbor. The service is the kind that you dont finish the plate and they are removing it. You dont finish your drink yet, and they are asking if you want another?? Clearly looking to turn over the tables quickly. So quickly in fact I had to rearrange the plates on my own table to make room for the entree's b/c we were still eating the appetizers, and the waiter is standing over my shoulder with hot plates.Rediculous. Anyway, all the above would be fine, if only the food was outstanding, and it was not! Average food at best. None of wich can be enjoyed when you are being rushed through it. And I could live without listening to my waiter flirt with hostess the whole time. He felt more inclined to pay attention to her needs (even though she was ignoring him) than any of his tables...If you really want to try it , I would suggest a time/day when it is slow.Maybe the kitchen would turn out better food, and the service would be better. And you wont find yourself having a conversation with your neighbor's table....O and the coat check couldnt find my coat either for 15 minutes.... more
