Best pizza in Rhode Island 7/3/2007

Frank & John's From Italy is the best pizza you can get in Rhode Island. It's that simple. Upon entering, you are struck by the welcoming, family-friendly atmosphere. Both Frank & John are straight off the proverbial boat and their decoration of the main dining room makes you feel like you're sitting in a neighborhood pizza joint in southern Italy. It's the kind of place that makes everyone feel welcome. The Olive Garden may spew that trite line about being there is like being family, well at Frank & John's, you truly feel that. The menu is loaded with all the expected Italian dishes. Nothing inventive or special, but the sauce is perfect. Italian food lives and dies on its sauce and many, many places will foul it up. Frank & John's is exquisitely spiced and prepared. Their pasta is well-cooked with well-blended cheeses filling them all. I especially like their manicotti and stuffed shells. Their bread is home-made and EXCELLENT. Ask them for a loaf to take home. They have a good drink selection that's beer-oriented. They have a small selection of wines, but nothing to write home about. As usual, the family-friendly theme continues with an excellent soda selection for the kids. Still, the star of the show is their pizza, and what a star it is. They don't have medium, they go straight from small to large, and then to giant. That should give you an idea of the size of the pizzas. They're huge. Hot, spicy, with perfect, hand-made dough all combine to form an orchestra of tastes that texture that is unmatched in Rhode Island. I hesitate to give them five stars because on ultra-busy days, such as Friday or Saturday, during the dinner rush, the quality of their food takes a dip as they try and handle the load of orders. It's still excellent pizza, then, but not the pizza-nirvana they make on other days. Go during the down times, maybe a late lunch, and you will be smiling a big, Italian smile with every mouth-watering bite. Pros: Phenomenal pizza, pasta, and sauce. Bargain prices. Cons: Food quality takes a dip on very busy days. more

Superb hiden jewel 1/20/2005

Frank and John's is a family restaurant where there is a welcoming spirit to compliment some passionately and consistently quality and tasty food. The pizza is far superior to any we've tasted in RI and is far and away a more complex and savory delight than the renown Atwell doughy concoction. The crust is flavorful, crunchy and chewy. The sauce is distinctly tomatoes with a slight zing of tartness and Italian spices. The cheese is a savory mix dominated by subtle mozzarella. All of the toppings enhance this solid foundation that has everyone we've ever taken there rave about it. All of the dishes - your standard Italian fare, have the same attention to flavor and detail. Pros: Superb food, Friendly staff, Mderately priced Cons: , Wait on Fri &Sat nite more

Italian Food Done Right 7/13/2003

For someone who's lived in Italy and loves Neapolitan cooking, I can say authoritatively that Frank & John is the ONLY place on this side of the Atlantic where I will go out to eat Italian food. This restaurant is the lone shining beacon in a sea of otherwise inferior, pretentious, and overly Americanized ""Italian"" restaurants (Federal Hill, North End included) that are completely out of touch with real native food. You won't find any culinary-school ""visionaries"" or profiteering wanna-bes hanging around. Everything about F&J, including the Neapolitan family who runs it, is positively top-notch and pleasantly down to earth. Pros: genuine, unpretentious, affordable Cons: there's only one more
