Great Fish, Bad Service, Fantastic View, Definite Tourist Trap 8/23/2008

We had read some fantastic reviews of the place and thought we would give it a shot. While the food was outstanding, the fish is baked in your choice of sauce in it's own pan and comes to the table hot which is a rarity, the service was poor and not timely. The noise factor was bothersome so we would definitely not recommend this restaurant for a romantic date. We should have known better for any restaurant on Fisherman's Wharf is likely to be more of a tourist trap than anything else. If you travel in from somewhere not known for great food or views The Franciscan would rate but we recommend folks residing in the greater Bay Area go elsewhere. Pros: Great Fish Creatively Cooked and Served Cons: Terrible Service, Noise, Ambiance more

Tourist trap 8/17/2008

I am not so bad that i would give a restaurant an unfair review. This place was a disappointment in so many ways. It was obvious they rely on tourists for their business because they were not overly polite. My first impression was not good. If you are at all leery of health standards at restaurants, then the fact that bread service area is within easy reach of the waiting area will disgust you. While we were waiting a couple walked up the bread table and put their hands all over the loaf of bread that was on the table. 2 seconds later a waiter walked up to the bread table, cut bread from the same loaf and delivered it to his table. My only thought was I dearly pray that the guy who was waiting had washed his hands!!! I told a waiter what had happened and I was appalled at his response, which was ?it?s ok! You can have some bread too!? I was shocked! We ordered the fried calamari; it was ok. Then we ordered clam chowder in bread bowls. The bread bowls were old and hard, the clam chowder was runny. For dinner, the prime rib and tiger prawns. The tiger prawns were over cooked. How could you over cook seafood if seafood is what you claim to be famous for? The prime rib was ok, the mashed potatoes were good but don?t you dare ask for substitutions. I asked our waiter if I could sub zucchini for the creamed collards and he said no, the price of the zucchini is higher than the collards. Wait a minute, I pointed out to the waiter that on the menu, the side items are all the same price, $7. So how is it more expensive? His only excuse after that was to tell me the restaurant does not allow subs. Well, All in all, the view was fabulous; the table was good, giving you the feel that you have some privacy from other patrons. The hostess could use an attitude adjustment but again, I think they cater to tourists so they feel like they just don?t care. Only reason I will ever eat here again is if we have a relative from out of town who absolutely insists on eating there. Pros: Ambience was good Cons: bread table within reach of waiting area patrons!!! GROSS!!! more

Nice Views, absolutely gorgeous 5/31/2008

My bf and I went here literally after we had just ate somewhere in the marina, but we had a cocktail here. The Food looks great but I certainly couldn't judge it. The staff was friendly and we met a very nice security guard who chatted us us for awhile. We would definitely be back on our next trip up to the bay. Pros: Lovely view of the bay, parking validation, extensive menus more

Worth every penny... 5/2/2008

I loooooved this place! We went without a reservation, yet we were seated at a great table with a great view, Alcatraz literally in front of us. The crew was very friendly, the service was quick. The wine was fine quality. The food was off the hook!!! I had the combo crabs, mussels and shrimps, my husband had some kind of fish stew.. Wow! And the cheesecake... Yummmm.. =) Great location for tourists like us, very convenient.. Jeeezz... I just cant seem to find one single negative thing about this place! more

Worst attitude ever! 11/27/2007

I made a group reservation at 7: 30pm. Our gruop got there aroun 7:40pm, and they didn't have any tables for us. They didn't even call us but they kept told us that they did. So we waited for 20 mins, we got our table, then a manager came over to me and ask me to see my phone! to check if I recieved their phone call!! (which I proved that I didn't receive any phone from them to cancel my reservation). The way he talked was rude and he didn't appolize to us. The food was good but with those attitudes especially from the manager, I would never go back there. Horrible horrible horrible.. Pros: Parking service Cons: Service more

Nothing special! 9/28/2007

For an SF crab restaurant, this place is nothing special. The service was terrible and the service was worse. Try the crab house, the staff is friendlier and food is way better. Pros: View Cons: service, food, menu selection more

Am I a guest or a chore? 9/7/2007

This restaurant offers a great view and slightly above average food, but the service staff made my wife and I feel like a burden. As a restaurant manager myself I understand that servers live off of tips and a higher check average generally means more money. I assume this is why my server looked disgusted when my wife (who was simply not hungry) ordered an appetizer as her meal. The server looked at her and said "is that it?" and then walked away before hearing our answer. When my server next made her appearance it was to slam down a bib and utensils for my cioppino that had just arrived. The only other time I saw her it was when she dropped off my check in another hasty display of inattention, fifteen minutes after I finished my meal and nearly thirty minutes after I finished my drink. I would have asked to see a manager but I was to angry and embarassed to discuss anything at the time. Pros: Location, Ambience Cons: Awful service more

Great location, nice wait staff. 8/30/2007

My husband were sightseeing at Fishermans Wharf and stumbled upon this restaurant. The front was nice, and we decided to go in for lunch. We were seated right away at a lovely table overlooking the water. I really liked the layout of the restaurant and thought the old pictures were a really nice touch. It looked like this place was a gem in it's hay day. Two things I could not get out of my mind was: A: a dead fly on the windowsill, and B: The bird dropping stained parking lot we were right on top of. It was entertaining watching the seagulls lay in the parking lot, but wished it had not been there. I recommend them water blasting the parking lot if at all possible. The bread was outstanding, and my arugula pesto pasta was delicious. It was served hot and fast. My husband had the clam alfredo and really enjoyed it. To sum it up. the food was great, but they need to work on the ambiance a little. Pros: Great food and service. Cons: Stained parking lot and a fly. Yucky. more

Great view 6/12/2007

The Franciscan was a great place to accomodate my large party of 19 people. We were seated in a fairly quiet area with a beautiful view of the water. The server was polite and patient with my large group of both visitors and SF locals. And my halibat was delicious! more

Best Seafood In Fisherman's Wharf 3/14/2007

This is definitely the place to go for fresh and well prepared seafood in Fisherman's Wharf . The building?s exterior has had a make over too, and what a view. more

Fun spot to take visitors or some friends for fresh SF seafood 3/2/2007

Despite the touristy location, the Franciscan can be really fun. The view is awesome and they are rocking some delicious crab at a good price. I'd go just for the housemade burrata, a rare treat--super creamy and amazing! They have a lot of other nice antipasto offerings that I'm going to have to go back to try. The half order of crab was great with a pint of Fat Tire. more

Better than expected! 2/11/2007

I came here with my man tonight on a whim as an early Valentines Dinner and we honestly expected a very average, touristy crab experience here. Parking was easy, and free, which was pleasantly surprising. We were greeted by a very unfriendly and ungracious hostess. We were sat right by a server station and asked to be resat somewhere a little more cozy, and although the restaurant was nearly empty, we had to wait for the hostess to figure out what to do. We were resat, and our server was very friendly. We ordered a bottle of reisling, and when the server came back and twisted the cap off, we looked at each other very nervously...we've never been served a bottle of wine with a twist off cap. The reisling was far below our expectations, but got us buzzed nevertheless. That was probably the low point of the evening. We ordered cast iron roasted mussels with garlic butter, which was just incredible, and a very interesting arugula salad with a unique wasabi kick. Then, out came our 3+ pounds of dungeness crab legs...and this was the best part of our dinner. What a treat: tender, tasty crab at a very reasonable price. Every bite was heaven! Our server checked back on us often to see how we were doing. We were thanked sincerely when we left. The bill for two was $106 before tip (one bottle of wine, a large salad, a mussels appetizer, and 3+ pounds of crab). We will be back! Pros: Easy parking, great value, great crab. Cons: Below average wine selection, mediocre ambience. more

Two words : Sizzling Crab! 12/13/2006

WOW! Is all I can say. This place is a GEM! I had friends visiting from the East Coast and wanted to have a "dungeness crab experience" that wasn't too messy (we're from the NorthEast - we know Lobster Bakes already). And we gave this place a shot... they were clean, accommodating, prompt, attentive, beautiful view, no wait... wonderful! They seated all 3 famlies (with 4 small kids) immediately. Had drinks on the table before we were even settled in, the apps and kids dishes appeared within 10 min. Then arrived the huge platters of SIZZLING CRAB! Oh, my gosh, huge easy to eat, sweet crabby goodness! The lemony butter stuff on the side was heaven. There is no better way to eat crab in a nice restaurant (we're all a fan of cracking it open with a mallet on a picinic table with lemon, mayo, butter & bread under the summer sun) but this was perfect "indoor" eating. The Cioppino is amazing, Crab Chowder perfectly seasoned, Antipasto a serious MUST (beets, proscuitto, olives, etc), Pasta was fresh and hot and al-dente, Salmon was moist and flaky (go with lemon butter or evoo sauce), Garlic Clams are sweet and plentiful... I could go on and on... we went back twice during the week they were here! It's a comfortable location, with friendly wait staff (if you have issues, be an adult and take them up with management BEFORE the end of your meal). I will be going back again and again... Pros: Parking, Service, SIZZLING CRAB Cons: Not Quiet? more

AWFUL dining experience. nice view. 11/15/2006

This place appeared nice from the outside. I thought I was in for fine dining; what I got was friendly service from a young inexperienced waiter (who failed to bring a small fork to eat my mussels, clams, or crab cocktail -- all he had given me was a huge dinner fork and he was confused when I asked for a small fork) and when I asked my soup, crab cocktail, and dinner be served in 3 courses, he insisted that he crab cocktail and soup will and should come out together because "the crab is served cold." That didn't even make sense to me. This is NOT fine dining, nor is it nice dining. My main entree (giant prawn in thai sauce with mussels and clams) was gross and left a weird taste in my mouth. I had to finish my meal with bread to get the taste out. In ADDITION, only 2 of the 8 clams/mussels on my plate were open. Aren't those NOT supposed to be eaten? Pros: nice view Cons: food was bad, service was awkward and inexperienced in serving seafood - hostess talking loudly on cell phone next to my table as I ate more

Job NOT Well Done!!! 6/21/2006

I guess I can't say this place is overrated b/c there are only 2 reviews. Nevertheless, with no axe to grind (as I was only there once), I will provide my concise and humble opinion. Wife and I went there on a Friday night, 6/16. It was her b-day. It looked like a 'nice' place. Young, unprofessional, unkempt hostess greeted/sat us. Older Italian man was our server. Nice guy...meant well. Had only been employed at the restaurant for 1 1/2 weeks yet neither the lead server nor management approached the table at anytime to check on him or us. EVERY single part of our order was wrong, i.e. wrong drinks brought to table, wrong food brought to different times...TWICE, missing items from our order...still charged for, I could go on...but why. As I stated earlier, the server was nice enough and apologetic so we did not say anything to him and tried to still enjoy our evening. However, AFTER paying the check ( not looking for any comps), I approached the manager on the way out and politely made him aware of the fact that his server trainee should probably not be taking tables alone just yet. Unfortunately, I was completely blown off by the short, stocky, sweaty 'manager'. Overall, the place has the potential to be more than it is...but to put it mildly, a few things need to change first. Good Luck!! Pros: Food, Location/Views Cons: SERVICE!! more

I went with friends...they had been already but I never had. What a great place! It's beautiful--huge windows overlooking the bay, comfy booths and great NON touristy food. Real, homemade burrata cheese, little appetizers that are yummy and so interesting. We had the crab feast and loved every mouthful. I didn't expect to love the food but they are new owners and they have added love of good food and great decor. Try it--you'll like it! They validate parking but park in the lot in front of the restaurant. Pros: great food, great views, outside seating Cons: service not smooth more

Wonderful Surprise 4/11/2006

To be honest, I didn't have high expectations since its on the Wharf but it was great overall. From the decor and view to the FOOD and the service. I wasn't familiar with the burrata cheese dish but it was so delicious. The cured meats app and the crab chowder that I had were lovely. Everyone in my group of four loved their food. The manager (host?) was really friendly too. If you want a view or will be on Fisherman's Wharf, this place is the place to go! Pros: seafood, view, validated parking more

  • In Short
This two-level, seafood-centric eatery rises out of Fisherman's Wharf like a magnificent yacht, its broad windows perfectly positioned for optimal views of Alcatraz. Dark, sexy wood accents and Frank Sinatra's crooning set the mood, giving this place both tourist cred and old-time San Francisco flavor. Oysters and steaks are on the menu, but Dungeness crab, including crab cakes, crab chowder, crab enchiladas and whole roasted crab, is the star here.
