This place turns me off. A lot of attitude (from both the customers and staff) and I would expect that for these prices, the food would be excellent. IMO, it was not. I also wa...

High Prices 6/4/2006

This is a small shop with high prices. Most of the items you find here can be found at any other store at less the price. However, there are times when I am in the area and I need to go here. So I end up paying the price. I found the service here to be okay. I did not find the staff of workers here to be real friendly or rude. The workers here seemed to be doing their own thing while customers shopped around. The gourmet and deli items look really good and they actually are good too. more

Woah..HIGH prices 5/17/2006

Once while we were talking the kids to Navy Pier from the AMC theater down the road, we stopped in here to pick up some ice cream for the kids. I was pretty impressed with the decor of this place and its very upscale sort of feel. They had a really great selection of foods here that included many gourmet items. BUT what amazed me was the prices here. I mean I know its in the heart of the city and all, but come on, some of these prices are seriously insane and I'm surprised anybody actually pays such high prices for groceries, even if they are gourmet. more

Too much 'tude for me 5/3/2006

This place turns me off. A lot of attitude (from both the customers and staff) and I would expect that for these prices, the food would be excellent. IMO, it was not. I also waited a LONG time for get a simple order, and I got the feeling I was an inconvenience to the staff because I just walked in the door. Yeah, they need some attitude adjustments and lower prices. more

You Are Paying For The Location 4/30/2006

I have to disagree with the other two ladies that reviewed this place. Everything is overpriced here, the service was poor and the place radiates a snobby attitude. It's a decent looking cafe but I don't eat sushi or any meats or fish that are raw so I can't comment about that. I can tell you why their prices are so high, the location. It is only a block or so from the famous Navy Pier and they are taking advantage of this fact. The food I did eat from here was OK, but I don't think I will be going back. The grocery store is on the other side of cafe and if you want to pay thru the nose that's your right. more

Great Food 11/19/2005

Fox and Obel is Chicago's answer to Dean & Deluca. It is set up much like a traditional grocery store except it is full of gourmet items. The prices are ridiculous, but everything is worth it. From the fresh sushi to the deli counter I haven't had anything I didn't like. One of my favorite dinners is getting 4 or 5 different things and heating them up for a buffet style meal. The cafe is also great -- excellent sandwiches, soups and salads, as well as main courses. Breakfast at Dean and Deluca is also something to experience. They're made to order omelets and potatoes are delicious. The coffee, Juice and Cider is all homemade and something to experience. Average meal price with a non-alcoholic drink is probably about 15 dollars. more

Great Gourmet Grocery Store 8/21/2005

Fox & Obel is a top-notch gourmet grocery store. It is not large, but the items that they carry are unique and tasty. The produce is always nice and the dessert case is great. I really like their chocolate cake and often have it for birthdays. The red velvet cake is good too, but I really like the chocolate. Oprah had the chef at Fox & Obel cook for her 50th birthday party, so you know that it has to be good. Highly recommended for groceries, breakfast, or lunch. more
