Good Food BUT Don't Expect Service 6/8/2008

Trendy atmosphere, creative menu selection, good quality food, large wine list.... BUT it took 25 minutes to get water and wine served, nearly drank the whole bottle of wine before entree arrived ("mishap" in the kitchen), had to flag down server--who performed dual duty as bartender that night--several times since he was unavailable to check in with us. Staff was courteous but appeared to be overworked. We expected a better experience for $150+ meal, not to mention there were only 7 other tables occupied the night we dined. Suggestion--perhaps, try lunch before committing to dinner! more

Food was great, so was atmosphere, service was ok 11/24/2007

A group of us visited Food Studio on a recent Saturday night. We started our evening at the bar but the bar staff seemed a bit over whelmed where we had difficulty getting service. The wine selection at the bar was decent with a number of selections at different price points. We were surprised to see Food Studio was offering a fixed course special that evening offering three courses for $25. This ended up being a tremendous deal. The quality of the food was excellent and the portions seem to be "normal" in size. This was a very pleasant surprise considering some of the lackluster meals we have of late during the Atlanta restaurant week at similar establishments. Give some kudos to Food Studio here. I had a hanger steak appetizer and Monk fish entree that were both very good. Dessert was so-so (fig pastry) but the table though the apple turnover was good. Our server was friendly but had a few challenges. Hopefully this isn't the norm for such an establishment. The space is amazing and is probably worth a meal on its own. Great place for a data or small gathering. Overall, I would recommend visiting Food studio again especially if they offer another promotion. Pros: Food, atmosphere Cons: Service more

Romantic and Simple 10/3/2007

I made a reservation 2 hours prior and I was seated immediately (a Wednesday evening, 8:45p). The waiter was knowledgeable and immediately offered a fine selection of wine when we were seated. The meal took maybe 20-25 minutes to prepare and was - to be honest - the BEST spiced pork tenderloin I have ever had (sorry Grandma!). When going on a date I enjoy the cliche candle-lit dinner, so this was the perfect spot. The ambience was quiet and I was actually able to hear my date - a nice change from the "trendy" spots around town where you end up yelling by the end of the night because you have lost your hearing. The music was low and upbeat, and the tables were spaced apart perfectly. I will definitely be going back soon. Pros: Prompt service, knowledgeable staff, easy valet service Cons: Hard to find location more

I expected better. 9/10/2007

I took my friends and brother to Food Studio on Friday. It wasn't crowd, nor pack. I made reservations for 4 @9:15pm. It was our first time. We came at 9pm, our hostess said we won't be seated until exactly "9:15pm". So we waited around. At 9:15pm, she tells us to wait a few minute for a big party to finish paying. We did not get seated until 9:40pm. Whoever was suppose to wait on our table, didn't acknowledge us at all until 9:55pm. I was a bit upset, because I really thought the service at Food Studio wold be as exceptional as it was at South City Kitchen in midtown and Ecco. We love Ecco and never had any customer service problems. But I don't know about Food Studio, what was it that made them not take us so seriously? When we finally got our food, I must say.. the food is tasty, very good.. however you want to put it. I would settle for Ecco, but since the giftcard, I got only let me go to Food Studio. I thought it'll be nice to try something new from Fifth Group. Just, don't make me put in reservations, when I'm not going to get seated at a certain time. If you're going to be our waiter/waitress, don't walk by our table constantly and act like we don't exist! Pros: Food was good, place was unique and treandy setting. Cons: Workers don't communicate much more

Terrific! 12/24/2006

The waitress we had was prompt and polite. She offered great wine suggestions. I must say one of the nicest servers I've had. The ambience was ridiculous, from the chairs to the layout I was impressed. Very hip and modern looking. Nothing about this place makes you feel uncomfortable. My girlfriend had the pork and I had the shellfish hotpot. The pork was hot and tender, and the shellfish hotpot was great with their bread. I wish I would have tried the pork instead. That is not to say that my entree was poor, but I enjoyed hers more. I am a meat kind of person. The desserts were awesome! The lemon basil bombe is longest lasting dessert item on their menu, and the taste explains why. This lemon basil bombe was probably the most refreshing and crisp tasting dessert i've ever experienced. Also, be sure to try the chocolate banana because it is also remarkable. The value was also a plus. Please go because walking from the valet to the restaurant provides great scenery. Pros: Service, food, ambience Cons: Can't think of one more

Wonderful Atmoshere... 11/21/2006

This restaurant has a great feel to it. The food is good but nothing outstanding but it is very romantic and in a funky part of town. more

Terribly Average, overrpriced restaurant for trend-monkeys. 11/13/2006

This place is all atmosphere and very little substance. It is sadly typical of trendy, overpriced, "it" locales. All style, no substance. The food, while not bad, was far from remarkable and certainly not worth the price. The wine selection is quite good however, even if it is delivered by waiters whom are more interested in where they work over why. At around 50 bucks a person its quite disappointing. At 25 I would go back. In a word there are much better restaurants in town and out that will give you better farew for less or just a little more. Pros: Atmosphere Cons: Food is Average more

Perfect Dining Experience 10/15/2006

This place was absolutely fantastic!! I was looking for a nice place to celebrate my one-year wedding anniversary. Some place elegant and quiet but not stuffy...this is exactly what I wanted. I only discovered it after couldn't get reservations at a "sister restaurant" (Ecco) and the guy on the phone recommended it. Everyone I spoke to here was extremely nice and willing to help me make it a special night. The perfect place for a romantic dinner. The food and service were great. Dont worry about the location. Its not that difficult to find as long as you do a little homework before you go. Highly recommended. Pros: Ambience, food, service Cons: None worth keeping me from going back more

Still amazing after all these years 7/18/2006

I just went back to the Food Studio, and learned from my server that the restaurant just celebrated its 10th anniversary. Most places that are 10 years old seem to go out of business, this one just keeps getting better! Our server was probably the best we have had anywhere in Atlanta--knowledgable, passionate, warm and friendly, prompt, great detail awareness, just simply amazing. The food was off-the-charts-fantastic. I've been to many other so called fine dining restaurants lately in Atlanta, and they mostly seem to be best at dishing up attitude and high prices. I thought the Food Studio was a great value, and even if it wasn't, it was one of the best meals I've ever had in my life. I have to rank it as my favorite place in Atlanta. Pros: Food, service, valet Cons: none I can think of more

you've got to be kidding me 5/24/2006

I absolutely love this place. I have been in alot of resteraunts and this place is so cozy and the food is delicious. I would reccomend this to everybody. If you go to Atlanta make sur u eat there. My husband takes me there every time we visit. love it!!!!! more

was Terrific, now just average 5/16/2006

Hands down the best meal and service I have had in this town in the three years that I have lived here. I want to go back many times. We had the Artisan Cheese Tasting appetizer which was quite fun and tasty. The menu changes regularly, but when we visited the pork and the bass were two terrific entrees. But what made the evening so great was the impeccable service. Our server was also there when he needed to be and knew the menu and wines inside and out. I highly recommend a visit. Edited 10/22/2007: We went back recently, since the re-theming and revamping. The menu is still interesting, but the food is nowhere near the quality it was in the past. Service was OK, but definitely not as attentive and knowledgeable as before. We sat at the bar for an appetizer and drinks and got to witness the wait staff and bartender snipe at each other rather openly. It wasn't pleasant. We had a tomato-peach-prosciutto appetizer. It was fine, but better prosciutto and tomatoes would have helped. I had a duck confit pasta that was well presented, but the flavors didn't marry well, and portions were noticeably tiny. It's a great location and I like the 5th group restaurants, I just think they are trying to keep up with some other hip locales in town and in my opinion they were a much better restaurant before the revamp. Pros: ambiance, service, quality Cons: food is no longer worth the price more

Wonderful flavors & service 3/29/2006

The new spring menu is amazing. The salmon & tuna crudo and the celery root & black truffle ravioli are wonderful. The braised pork belly was excellently done and paired with smoked yukon gold potatoes. Good selection of desserts - the apple tart tatin was first class. Service very good also. Pros: romantic, good service , great food Cons: not for kids more

WONDERFUL 2/8/2006

This restaurant is amazing. Our waiter was friendly and knowledgeable. The food was amazing, especially the scallops! We felt very well taken care of, and would go back any time. For the overall quality, the price is definitley on par. Pros: Variety, Knowledgeable staff, Very Romantic Cons: Tricky to find more

Always Delicious 11/30/2005

The food here is always delicious and the service is definitely on par with the food. I have not found a more consistent and delightful dining experience in Atlanta. The only negative thing about Food Studio is that it can be a bit tricky to find, though the location definitely adds to its wonderful ambience. Pros: Food, Service, Ambience Cons: Tricky to Find more

Nice place 8/6/2005

The staff needs to get over, everything. The service is poor, food is so-so, space is "ok." more

Prepare to be impressed 6/9/2005

Food Studio just added a new executive chef, and it shows. Great food. Perfectly executed. Very seasonal, produce-driven menu. No foo-foo-overdone-fusion crap. Had the quail appetizer with cornmeal crusted sweatbreads and the duck. Absolutely blew me away. Also some of the best ambiance of any restaurant I've been to in Atlanta yet. Check this one out! Pros: FOOD!, Ambiance, Service more

LOVE this place! 3/3/2005

This is a great place because the atmosphere is very arty and dramatic, most of the food is stellar, and they have some great wines and fun cocktails. The Cioppino and Skate were fantastic, but boiled potatoes were a lazy side dish. The cheese plate comes with small portions of excellent local cheeses and the best fruit paste/relishes/chutneys I have every tasted. Bread is fresh and delicious. CONS:The house salad is a waste of menu space. I have been consistently disappointed by the desserts and will not order them again. Pros: ambience, seafood, wines Cons: Prices are too high, Desserts more

delicious 11/13/2004

i'm an out-of-towner and, bummed about the really awful restaurants in my hotel and what seems to be nothing around it, i started googling and found this place. i went there with several friends, and found it really excellent. our server was great, the food was outstanding in creativity and flavor, quality, quantity, and presentation, the wine list was good, and there was a decent selection of port and scotch as well. i may, in fact, come back again before i leave atlanta. it was an excellent evening. Pros: excellent food, not packed, great service more

Refute to poor review 3/14/2004

I'm writing this review as a rebuttal to a poor one that I read about The Food Studio. This is my favorite restaurant in Atlanta. I have dined here about 10 times, and every time I had a memorable experience. The wait staff is superb, the culinary expertise of the chef is unmatched by most chefs in Atlanta, and the ambiance is - well- perfect. To the reviewer who gave not so great a review, I have 3 words: get a life!!!! Pros: Fairly priced, great atmosphere, great food! more

Unbelievable!!! 3/6/2003

Was visiting from DC, taking friends out for an engagement present, WOW!!! Appetizers great, entrees, especially the scallops and pork loin were flavored and cooked flawlessly. Dessert, the lemon bomb cake is #1. Service, knows the dishes as well as providing excellent wine recommendations. more

Editorial
  • The Scene
Dark and sexy, the restaurant is a big draw with well-dressed in-towners on their way to the theater or a gallery opening. Ancient machinery from the building's days as a manufacturing plant hangs from the ceiling; exposed brick, a romantic little fireplace, a copper-plated staircase and dozens of flickering candles give the large main dining room a subdued, calming vibe. Though big groups are common, noise is rarely a problem. Servers have polish and panache.

    The Food
The playful menu focuses on seasonal ingredients. For starters, try a light composition of crab and avocado in cucumber vichyssoise or a dazzling arugula salad with house-smoked salmon and ripe cantaloupe. Entrees can be less successful, but change on a regular basis. Smoked Niman Ranch pork, for example, is a bit dry and poorly matched with succotash drowned in barbecue sauce. The wine list is full of offbeat, enticing choices.
