Best 30th birthday 8/2/2010

I was looking for a venue that could accommodate a big group for a 30th birthday. Fontana's was PERFECT! Their event planner was extremely helpful and very friendly in setting up the party and reserving our tables. Everything was great, from the service to the music. And the space was way bigger than I expected, making it very comfortable for our large guest list. Definitely consider throwing your parties here -you won't be disappointed! Pros: Big space, accommodating staff more

Amazing 6/4/2009

I went to a friend's birthday party here and am so glad I did. Really sweet bartenders, (which is so unusual in this part of town), great dj, reasonably price drinks. I'll definitely return. Pros: Bartender, music, atmosphere Cons: absolutely none! more

Cool Bar, Excellent Staff, Live Karaoke?!!! 5/12/2009

Karaoke with a kick-ass live band. Need I say more? Yes. I owe this bar my life. These guys totally saved me from uncertain doom and showed me a great time in the process. I was in NY for a business trip, out on a date, the girl split, I went after her, leaving my laptop behind. Lost, running down the streets in china town, I somehow made it back. Figuring that the New York Rock-n-Rollers that frequent the joint would gladly take my new MacBook Pro off of my hands, I was freaking out. The bouncer at the door graciously calmed me down, assuring me that it would all be cool, the bartender had already stowed my laptop in the office for safe keeping. I had to do something to thank the staff, especially those that wouldn't let me buy them drinks, and the bartender asked that I write a review. These guys freaking rock. I will definitely go back next time I'm in town. Pros: Excellent Service, Friendly Staff Cons: None. more

This is a great bar, cool space, friendly bartenders. 11/28/2008

I love this bar and have always had a lot of fun there. Perhaps the last reviewer is new to New York, because $7 for a vodka tonic is NOT expensive, and there will always be a line for the bathroom on a Friday or Sat night no matter where you go. Fontanas is a great time. Pros: Great place to party and hang out more

Great music, always a good time but the bathroom situation... 4/20/2008

I've been going there for a few years now and have a great time all the time but they just need to have some more bathrooms on the upper floors. There are 3 upstairs and when there are a few hundred people there on a Saturday night... that's not a good time! As there is 1 women's and 1 men's bathroom downstairs, you usually have to pay to get down there, so those aren't an option too often. Other than that the prices of drinks are a bit steep but I guess the good music out weighs that. $7 for Vodka and club soda is a lot of money! Pros: Music!!!!! Atmosphere! Friendly bartenders! Cons: Lack of bathrooms and price of drinks more

Tne bands were terrific, the sound good, and the bar tender was friendly and with it 2/20/2008

More then the bar which was fine, Im recommending the band I saw there that was great. Original and\r energetic, The Communication Corporation check them out on thier web site.\r These guys are talented!\r As far as the venue, it was like the base ment of the knitting factory as far as sound went and the room is long and there is a small bar, the bar tender was very nice. All tog. I thought it was a good experience, fun place to hang. Pros: Large open space up stairs, with big bar, band space in the base ment had some dance space Cons: Dark front and hard to find, they need a better brighter sign, we drove by it three times before we saw it, wish we could hear the live music from down stairs more

Awful 12/15/2007

About 350 people and 3 coed bathrooms! What a joke. I must have spent 15-20 minutes on line each time I had to use the bathroom. Until this place wises up and adds a reasonable amount of restrooms, I would avoid it. Pros: not many Cons: Too dark, too loud, too crowded, not enough bathrooms more

Flip cup in Chinatown 11/7/2007

This is the kind of fun dive bar more typical of a rural college town than Chinatown. Bring a big group of people who want to get drunk in an atmosphere that's heavy on the beer and light on the pretense, sink into a booth by the bar or gather 'round one of the flip cup tables in back. Either way, you'll get tanked before sunset without really trying. Pros: Lowkey, fun place to booze on the weekdays. Cons: It may feel like the campus dive you remember--or would, if you hadn't blacked out--from college, but you'll still spend around $10 for non-well mixed drinks. more

Best Bar Overall 10/23/2007

I just had my birthday here this past weekend, and I have to say, this is probably one of my favorite bars in NYC. I've been to a lot of different places, but the one thing about Fontana's is that it's hip and trendy, not too crowded, a great social scene (w/ great music and awesome artwork), and just plain out fun. I had a huge mix of different types of people on my guest list and all of them kept going on and on about how they loved this bar. I would DEFINITELY recommend it - it's a perfect medium no matter what kinda atmosphere you're into - more

So far I've seen Carnivore and Early Man at this huge place 10/23/2007

Normally I would say a huge bar ain't my cup of tea, but this place is actually a collection of reasonable spaces I can feel safe in. Excluding the main, sorta ball-roomish space. Anyway, I go out to see music and this place is not afraid to book the hard stuff that I love. Hardcore, Metal, punk. Not every night but often. Better yet I can drink 3 dollar cans of beer (i forget what kind) and not go broke like I do at most shows. Oh and once I am full of beer they are kind enough to have bathrooms in every one of the aforementioned rooms. I say hells yeah. Good music, cheap beer. good for them... good for us! Pros: Bands and Bartenders are pros Cons: Bouncers are cons more

Pretentious 10/21/2007

My friends and I showed up and the bouncer situation was a little ridiculous. We waited in two separate lines where we were told to ""have your IDs ready for when I check them!!"". After this line, we were directed to a second one. We told the bouncer we were here for a party and were not on the guest list, but he insisted on looking for each of our names. When he couldn't find our names (or perhaps convinced himself he had indeed found them?) he told the ladies to step up. A question of ""well what about him? He's with us too!"" was ignored. After the ladies ""stepped up"", he then told the gentleman to step up too. What suspense! \r \r The kicker was that when we finally got inside the bar... there was no one there. It was pretty much empty, and I left after 20 minutes. \r \r This bar was laughably lame. Pros: Lower East Side Cons: It's not fun. more

bouncers are terrible 10/20/2007

the lamest place ever. The bouncers are the rudest people I have ever met... do not go here. i repeat. do not!!! Cons: bouncers are rude more

does it get any worse? 10/7/2007

There is nothing good about this place. The staff is rude, the bar is dark, there's ONE bathroom, the drinks are miserable. After the wait on line, I expected a lot more and was incredibly disappointed. I would not recommend this place to anyone. Pros: nothing Cons: everything more

DO NOT come here on a saturday night! 10/6/2007

I guess it's standard knowledge to avoid the crowds on weekends in the city, but I was expecting a chill rock and roll bar, but instead I got the lame crowd whom probably didn't even realize the Ramones were playing they were so busy running into people wasted. Most of the crowd were guys in button down shirts and carbon copy party girls, but the biggest turn off was the incredibly rude bartender (he moaned and whined, audibly, when he had to get a beer for me after he got one for my friend- actually he had the other bartender get it for him bc he was too lazy to). Amazing music selection, but not appropriate for the crowd. Prob a cool place during the week, avoid on the weekends! All in all, was a shame. Pros: great music, big space, cool decorations Cons: bad weekend crowd, rude bartender more

Great Bar 11/11/2006

This is a great spot. I had a going away party here with a large group of my friends. Terrific atmosphere, awesome staff, good music, CHEAP drinks... In short - this bar is the cat's pyjamas. Pros: Atmosphere, Staff, Value more

Something For Everyone 6/22/2006

Just discovered this bar tonight and I only live a block away. Amazing artwork, great jukebox, cool atmosphere. This is the kind of place you'd want to go after work to just grab a drink or spend a whole night here with a group of friends. Lowkey bar area upfront, lounge in the back, pool table, live bands...what more can you ask for! This bar can suit any mood. Definitely the coolest bar I've been to so far in NYC. Get there...and soon! Pros: Good beer selection, jukebox, ambience more

the bar makes me want to go out more!! 5/31/2006

I can't say enough good things about this place. The vibe is cool, the wait staff are great and the drinks just keep on flowing. I have been there twice and enjoyed myself both times. The pool room is the back is a great part of the place. But, the place is so big I am sure you will find the right spot. It can get very packed late night! more

A cool, huge bar 12/10/2005

Just went to check this place out with some friends last night. Very impressed. The bar is beautiful and there's cool artwork everywhere. There's an upstairs 'loft' with a tables and a dj, and there's a downstairs private room for parties. All told there's so much space that they have three bars. As great looking as the space is, the staff makes it even better! The bartenders are cool and friendly and the manager will sit down and chat with you too. Did I mention they are all hot? Check it out before it becomes impossible to get a seat. Pros: staff, space, atmosphere Cons: new more

Cool new bar! 11/26/2005

Happily came across this new bar on Eldridge st. this weekend. It's a huge place with 3 levels yet somehow still has a cozy, warm atmosphere. It has a great upstairs balcony with couches and a downstairs music room for bands...should be starting music soon they said. Pool table, great drink paintings...what else...projected movie on wall...would be great for a party, or like i did, just going in for a couple drinks. Check it out before it gets too crowded, cuz it probably will... Pros: atmosphere, bartenders, location more
