Filter was the most awesome-ist place. The bank that now reside in its place was soooo unnecessary and completely out of place in that area.

Horrible Cigarette Smoke!!!! While the location and food are great, the cigarette smoke is absolutely awful. I think because Starbucks and Caribou forbids smoking, every cha...

Filter 5/28/2006

The best way to describe this coffee shop is to call it local, which is funny because it used to be called the Local Grind. When the Local Grind shut down everyone thought that it was over and then Filter popped up in its place. They have great seating and drinks at reasonable prices. This is a nice place to meet with friends over a cup of coffee. more

Finding a Seat Like Musical Chairs 5/25/2006

Every time I go, it's crowded! And some people are friendly and cool with it, and others get kind of grumpy. However this leads to a great vibe for studying, writing, chatting with a friend, whatever. The coffee is very good, and there are plenty of delectable dishes and sweets to go with it. The staff is kind of hip, but not in a "follow-the-leader" kind of way; they are definitely feeling their own groove. The bathroom situation needs some work--they need more of them and/or to clean more frequently. more

Cider 5/20/2006

This place has great cider for those of you that don't drink coffee. It is in the middle of Wicker Park so it is easy to get to. The people who work here are really cool and once in a while give you a free refill. The seating is great with couches and large chairs that don't match each other but bring the room together well anyways. more

Got Coffee 3/8/2006

Filter, which used to be called Local Grind, is safely my favorite coffee place in Chicago. Their chairs and couches are comfortable in a more unique way than your average relaxed shop, because it is all mix matched. At any time of day you will find people hanging out with friends or cramming in that last sentence for tomorrows paper. A great place to just be. more

Ecclectic Comfy Coffee House 3/5/2006

Filter has a very relaxed artsy atmosphere with plenty of comfy seating. You will see an ever-changing array of wall art as well as a mixed group of people who just seem to fit. Their prices are good, though they do not take credit cards ( for those who are used to Starbucks). Feel comfortable visiting alone during the day or night to have a cup of coffee and relax. Or bring a friend or date, it's not too loud for conversation. Their coffee drinks are pretty good and they will serve you in a glass or ceramic mug. I really love the feel of this place and i go there as often as possible! more

Great eclectic food and coffee 8/30/2005

They have an extremely wide variety of food of both breakfast and lunch or dinner options, including such types as goat cheese, etc, at very reasonable prices. They also have a wide variety of both coffee and non-coffee drinks. There's a pretty eclectic group of people there - artsy types, students, and just the mix of locals that you would expect to find in Buck Town. There is a lot of seating, but be prepared it is pretty smoky. more
