bad service 1/8/2006

Well, well. I wish I would have read the reviews about the paltry service. Bad, rude and terrible. Ruins the whole experience, even though the food was ok. Small portions. Cons: bad "service", rude, BAD SERVICE more

NW fresh ingredients at their finest 1/3/2006

I have dined at the Farm Cafe a few times. My favorite things have been the baked brie with seasonal fruit (so delicious, tried replicating at home, just not the same) and the halibut cakes (which were only featured one of the times I have eaten here, and I hope they return shortly). The service can be slow (having an empty water glass for about 20 minutes or so) but I would not recommend eating here for the service, it's all about the fresh fish and seasonal vegetables, I cant wait to go back again. I do recommend dining during mid-week and earlier in the evening to avoid long waits. Pros: wine, fresh food Cons: slow service more

WOW! 12/28/2005

12/26/05 My husband and I moved here from Chicago where we were used to fabulous restaurants. We have been here a year and a half and this was by far the best meal we have had in Portland. The food was creative, delicious, and resonably priced. The bar had fun drink specials. The house is small and cozy. The waitstaff was a little distant, yet knowledgable and helpful. The wine list was small, yet what they had was great and they featured a lot of local wines. Again, reasonably priced. We have our new favorite place!!! Pros: cozy, delicious, well priced Cons: none! more

Fantastic service and Food! 12/22/2005

We ate at the Farm Cafe on a Thursday night. It was not crowded, we had no wait for a table at 6:00 pm. Our server was incredible, olite, attentive without being disruptive. fast and informative. great service! The food was truly incredible! We had the Fried Brie with that famous bread for appetizer. Cream of Mushroom soup (best ever), with a Feta Cheese salad (very fresh and great cheese) and the Pan Fried Trout (wow, they are famous for this for a reason, with rice pilaf and veggies), very very very good indeed. Apple Crumble for dessert topped with vanilla ice cream. all of the dishes were well presented, hot when needed and cold when necessary. We never had to wait for service of any kind. filled our water glasses more than once. checked on us several times. this place is all organic and mostly vegetarian. Pros: Service, Food more

Rude, insulting service. 11/29/2005

The food is quite good and not too spendy but I have been terribly insulted by the waitstaff. The blatant contempt my server showed for my girlfriend and I would have been laughable had we not been trying to enjoy ourselves. Who owns this place and where is she? I have been there several times over the past year and the service has ranged from mediocre to appalling. Please sack the waitstaff, I'd love to be able to eat there more often. Pros: Food, Price Cons: Terrible Service, Obnoxious Band more

Farm Where The Emperor Wears no Clothes 11/22/2005

Their waitstaff will ""grace"" you with fake smiles, forced cheer while delivering their version of ""service"". The food was OK, but sitting at the bar, the three gals working had nothing positive to say about their customers at their tables. ""Did you see her dress...Oh my god, I cannot believe he is here...."" It brought visions of a high school girls' locker room, built in a hen house, set on the theatrical interpretation of the Emperor Wears no Clothes. Nothing like a Paris Hilton attitutde from your waitress. Humility is not in the lexicon for these gals. The food is pretty good, but when you see such disingenous service as these ladies provided, it makes everything tast bitter and salty. Can the entire front of house staff, replace them with people who are more interested in their customers than themselves, and this alone will make the food taste better. Pros: Location, Food-OK Cons: Service, Service, Service more

great food, breathtakingly bad service 11/16/2005

The Farm Cafe is a strange dichotomy. On one hand the food is really really good, on the other, the service is off the charts bad. Judging by how openly rude everyone is, I would surmise that management must encourage such abysmal behavior. If you can put up with some of the rudest, most stuck up people you have ever had to deal with, you will be rewarded with some of the best food around. Pleasure and pain is the best way of describing the Farm. Pros: Food, Ambience Cons: Service more

Delicious Salmon! 10/22/2005

I love this place! The food is amazingly fresh and so flavorful. The space itself is very small, and some tables are placed awkwardly making you feel like you're in the way in your seat, but it's cute and cozy. I've been here a few times, and getting the attention of the staff when you arrive can sometimes be difficult, and waiting for a table is challenging in the small space near the bar if the bar is full, but the food is excellent. I suggest ordering a few things and sharing. The seafood caesar is delicious and they don't skimp on the seafood. The rosemary hazelnuts are yummy too, but the best thing I've had here is the salmon, by far! I love that they support local farmers and use seasonal ingredients. It feels healthy to splurge a little here. Pros: fresh food, local ingredients, great flavors Cons: small space more

special! 10/3/2005

What a jewel on this gritty stretch of E Burnside. There are so many good restaurants in Portland that I am too busy trying them all to return to many, but I just went here for a 2nd time & it was good. It's unpretentious but special. The food is creative, fresh and delicious. I've had equally good food elsewhere -- but at twice the price. I like the service -- not overbearing or pushy, but friendly and attentive -- it's a good place to go with someone you want to enjoy a nice time without staff trying to turn 'em and burn 'em. Wine recommendations were knowledgable and spot on. This is an urban place, and small. Small groups, party of two -- Everyone who is lucky enough to eat out in Portland has their special place. This is mine. Pros: Food, wine list, service more

One of the best meals I've ever had 9/23/2005

The food here was AMAZING. It was elegantly presented, simple and full of mouthwatering flavor. Good sized portions, but should have ordered seconds because it was THAT good. We received good service; our server was attentive and checked up on us quite often. I only wish this restaurant was closer to where I live so I could enjoy it as often as I wanted. I recommend this to anyone visiting Portland and to enjoy a meal for me. Pros: excellent food!, inexpensive, variety Cons: crowded more

Small portions 8/23/2005

The food is great, the service is ok, the atmosphere is lovely. Portion sizes could use some work, considering entrees come a la carte. I shouldn't have to purchase an $8 appetizer in order to leave satisfied. Pros: atmosphere, good food Cons: small portions, aloof waitstaff more

Excellent choice for a taste of Portland 6/15/2005

Ate at the Farm on our weekend vacation to Portland. Were able to get a seat for dinner after waiting on the back patio for only 15 minutes while enjoying a delicious mojito made with fresh mint by a friendly bartender. Dinner was sensational. The salad with fried goat cheese was to die for, as was the baked brie with seasonal berries!! Everything was fresh, nicely presented and just the right portion size. Dessert was good, especially the chocolate souffle! Definitely would go back again & again!!! Pros: inexpensive, fresh, ample portions more

A rainbow of a trout! 5/16/2005

The Farm Cafe has started serving trout occasionally as a daily special, and it is the most heavenly food I have ever had whether it be atop jasmine rice or over potatoes!Kudos to the Farm; at $14 a plate this is the best deal for such a feast! The amazing pinot noir choices enhanced this special meal. Something magical must happen in that tiny kitchen. xo, Happy Regular Customer Pros: amazing food more

Very Bad 1/29/2005

I've been here several times and tolerated the snotty service; not any more! My horror story: After standing in the door for ten minutes waiting for someone to acknowledge (instead of staring past) us, we finally asked about the waiting time. We were sternly told to take seats at the bar: we would only be given an estimate if we sat down. Then, we had to convince a waitress/hostess to give us an estimate of waiting time. Her answer: ""You shouldn't be thinking in terms of time. You can sit at the bar and eventually you will get a table."" Unbelievable! Easily the worst experience I have ever had in a Portland restaurant. The service has always been poor, but this was just the final straw. As much as I like the food here, I say avoid this place until the staff learns what it means to be a professional. Pros: Good food, Hazlenuts Cons: Bad service, Horrible service, Terrible service more

Flavorful food, yet challenging service 1/29/2005

Tried the Farm for the first time tonight. Thought we'd check it out for late night fare. Initially we were greeted by ""we're out of this, that and the other thing."" That's fine, I'll let that go, yet it seemed confusing as to who was the waitress and who was going to take the order. We finally did put in our order and got our bread - yum yum Ken's artisen bakery- but never got our wine. I worked in a few restaurants when i was younger and remember the first mantra - what can I get you to drink. The wine never came. I had an excellent Penne and my partner had the seafood caeser. We left not as frustrated about the service because the food was amazing and flavorful. fix the service and we'll try it again. more

Excellent 1/22/2005

Tremendous restaurant. We were nervous reading the other reviews about the service, but had excellent service! This is a new favorite. more

Good service early in the evening 1/18/2005

Despite all the reviews of bad service, I found the wait staff to be prompt and attentive. Our waitress helped us pick out a great appetizer (the baked brie is absolutely wonderful) and our meal came promptly after we had finished it. We did come early (5:30) and had our pick of tables--perhaps coming at a less crowded hour is the way to avoid long waits and busy servers. more

Great, not fast 11/18/2004

They don't take reservations and you might wait an hour. Bar is excellent but tiny so you may have to wait outside. Appetizers are great and available at the bar. It took a while to be served at the crowded bar: service at the table was excellent. Food was outstanding and VERY reasonably priced. more

OK I changed my mind! 9/22/2004

I said I wouldn't be back, but I went back. And the service is a lot better now. The food has always been good. I got the tofu cutlet, which I thought was fabulous, and that should tell you something as I am a veal-and-foie-gras-eatin' meatatarian. Presentation could still use help, although it too has improved. I do wish they would use bigger plates so the food had room to be displayed nicely. But it's a comfort food restaurant above all else, so enjoy it for that. And the Friday night band rocks! Pros: Pretty room, Delicious fresh food, always improving Cons: Neglectful service, Limited parking, So-so presentation more

Went for the 1st time lastnight 8/7/2004

And overall had a good experience. The food was very good (I got the famous tofu dish and he got the snapper) though my SO was quite jealous of my yummy tofu:) The house wines are now $4 a glass, but still a very good deal. The beer list is quite short, but it is adequate. The service was very good; our waiter refilled our glasses promptly and although it was packed our drinks came about 2 minutes after we ordered and our dinner about 10. The only bad part was our table. I think it was probably the worst one in the place! It's a tiny end table stuck in a corner so I had to turn my neck weird to face my SO, and my neck hurt quite a bit for a few hours afterward. The other tables didn't seem to have that issue, though. Pros: veg options, cheap good wine, pretty house Cons: , bad corner table more
