Overpriced and Rude Manager/owner 10/19/2009

Took a date here and had the smallest portions imagined served. Overpriced is puting it mildly. When we walked to the entrance the owner/manager stared us down and did not acknowledge us. Thought we were invisible. I said I wanted a table and he pointed! Pure arrogance! I don't think they want black customers in Farina! My worst experience in my lifetime in a restaurant! Pros: Good architecture Cons: Rude, racist manager/owner, overpriced, tiny portions more

overpriced, so-so. 10/19/2009

Small portions, $30 a plate average, $11 cocktail average, okay service (lots of water and bread served). Seated upstairs and it was a rare October humid/muggy evening and there was no ventilation other than the open door. Pros: fancy, full of middle-aged hipster people Cons: fancy, full of middle-aged hipster people + expensive more

I sing great praises!!! 10/10/2009

We had our wedding rehearsal at Farina. Gabriele- the manager-helped make the night perfect:) We had the private dinner room with attached roof top balcony. We couldn't have dreamed of a more perfect meal and atmosphere- all 45 of our guest couldn't stop singing their praise:) Thank you!! Pros: food, service, atmosphere!! Cons: absolutely none more

Outstanding Northern Italian Cusine 9/21/2009

This restaurnat is outstanding and has never failed to let us down. We make the trip to the city from the Peninsula even in rush-hour traffic and have done so countless times since we 'found' them serving their authentic too special Focacia (like none other) at a charity event. \r Farina's consistant and excellent quality food is prepared and served with attention to detail. The pasta is superb, the best outside of Genova, Italy, the menu and wine selections are diverse. \r Attention to service from ALL of the staff has been unique, friendly and professional at the same time - and it doesn't matter whether you're dining mid-week or on a busy weekend. Pros: Authentic and consistant Cons: If there are any - it's worth it. more

Farina - a terrible experience 9/15/2009

I went there tonight with my wife for our anniversary. The whole fish I ordered was full of scales. I tried at least 5 bites and couldn't get past the scales each time. The extremely arrogant manager, while he did take the fish off the bill, refused to comp us even a cup of coffee. He said that he was OK with losing customers!!?? I must say that the waitress was very nice and gave great service. It was the manager's attitude that prevents us from going there ever again. Pros: Close to my house Cons: The manager is horrendous more

I had the misfortune of dining at Farina last night. \r \r The food was mediocre at best; plain and tasteless was the motif. The small portions were definitely not worth the exorbitant prices. And we waited more than 45 minutes for our main course and our orders still came out wrong. Our main complaint, however, wasn't the food or the wait, but the unfathomly rude manager, Gabriele. \r \r This guy could not have been more arrogant. Because of the long wait for our food, our server had brought us two complimentary glasses of wine. But when we got the bill, we were charged for the two glasses. When I brought this to the server's attention, she told me to go talk to the manager, Gabriele, on the other side of the restaurant--note she didn't bring him to our table; she pointed him out and instructed me to go to him. When I found Gabriele and showed him our bill, he nastily sneared that he never agreed to comp us the wine. I explained to him that his server had. Incredulously, he insisted she didn't have his authority to do so and we should pay for what we drank. I responded, absolutely floored, that we would never have ordered the two glasses had they not been complimentary. He could have cared less and would not remove the charges. Moreover, his demeanor was downright haughty and discourteous. In sum, he was absolutely CLASSLESS. This kind of ""customer service"" may fly in Liguria--his apparent home--but not here. It is just beyond the pale for a manager to charge for a complimentary glass of wine. \r \r Given the tasteless food and manager's lack of any decorum, I recommend you stay far away from this one! more

atrocious service! DO NOT EVER GO HERE 1/22/2009

The most atrocious, arrogant, degrading, insulting service I have EVER experienced in my life!\r This restaurant needs to be expelled from the Mission and thrown back somewhere, I don?t want to say Marina/Marin cause they don?t deserve this. \r The menus were snatched from my wife and our guests and we were told to leave. The manager who I thought was going to give us a reason to stay was the rudest servicewomen I have ever talked to.\r \r heard they have good food but we never tasted it, we couldn't stand the service. more

I heart Farina! 11/25/2008

I adore this restaurant. First of all the decor is minimalist with the perfect finishes, every detail of this place was carefully crafted to make you feel special when dining. Beyond how beautiful the ambiance is the food is incredible, while I'll admit a bit pricey but throroughly worth every penny! From the freshly baked bread, to the obviously delicately hand-made pastas I was loving every single morsel. Farina you have my heart and I will be back soon with all my friends! Pros: The food and atmosphere! Cons: Parking in the Mission more

Loved it! 10/2/2008

I have to say that I completely disagree with some of the other reviews on here. I had an exceptional experience at Farina. My husband and I stumbled in and sat at the bar, we had 2 wonderful glasses of wine reccommneded by the bartender. Then the food...we had their cured meat app, then shared a walnut pesto spinach ravioli that was so yummy! The bread was to die for and then we shared dessert. The total experience was perfect. I love the design elements and the one long family style table. I felt that the prices were completely justified and the food was impreccable. I will certainly be coming back and bringing family when they come in from out of town as well. more

what a total disappointment 8/26/2008

those of you who like delfina and thought this was worth a try, let me give you some advice: ""don't bother"". the food is mediocre and wildly overpriced. for $34 a plate and $16 apps, i expect truly excellent food, not average and undistinguished fare and horrible service. our waitress was worthless. it took us20 minutes just to pay. and the wine list is one of the more offensively overpriced in the city. in a town with as many good cafes as san francisco, this place will not make it. even if the food were half the price, there are still a dozen places i'd rather eat.\r \r miss this one. not worth it all all. more

Terrible experience with Farina Management 7/17/2008

I made a reservation for a friends' birthday party at Farina on a Saturday. 10 of us. When I called to confirm two days before Javier, the manager, said my reservation was down for Sunday. He said there was nothing on Saturday available and BLAMED ME for the problem. I couldn't believe it! I told him it was an error on Farina's end, but he said that was not possible and that he couldn't help. I will NEVER do business with this restaurant again. more

Came here on Friday. This place is super cool and modern. They have outdoor/sidewalk seating. We had to wait for a bit, which is pretty standard in SF, on a weekend. Once we were finally seated, our waiter came by and said he''d be right with us. Ten minutes later he was right back with us. That was pretty much the premise to the service the entire night. SLOW SERVICE. So... on to the food. We ordered this prosioutto flatbread thing, and foccacia. Soo good. The foccacia melts in your mouth..I ordered the asparagus ravioli. Literally, the last time I tasted pasta this delicious was actually in Italy. The portions were perfect. This place is as noisy as it looks. Maybe it was so noisy that our waiter forgot about us, because we had to flag him down to get our bill. TWICE. I was too full for dessert, until I passed bi rite on my way home (ha ha). Regardless, food is great here but the service was not. You can't beat homemade pasta made right in front of your eyes. I'll be back (on that waiter's day off.) more

Great food and atmosphere, jerky service 4/11/2008

My husband and I dined here without a reservation on a week night. Even though the restaurant was packed we were seated at the counter right away. The pasta was fresh and delicious, the pesto was a little over powering. The portions were a great size and very filling. Our problem was with the service. We had almost finished our appetizer by the time our beverages arrived. The Coke that the waitress brought was 1/2 Coke and 1/2 melted ice. Several more times duing the meal the waitress offered to refill our drinks, the glasses were rather small so we accepted. When we got our bill it was quite a bit higher than we expected - about $20.00 more. We were charged for every Coke - these were Cokes that were on tap and delivered each time with melted ice. The last Coke was brought about 5 minutes after we got our check. On the way out of the restaurant, I stopped the person I thought was a manager, a guy with a suit and a shaved head and I complimented him on the food and told him that we were stunned to be charged $20 dollars for soft drinks. His response was a nasty ""this is a restaurant"". Wow, a restaurant. The majority of fast food restaurants don't charge for soft drink refills. Most fine dining restaurants in the Mission don't charge for refills either. Pros: Nice Atmosphere Cons: Charges 3 Dollars for Each Coke Refill more

Fresh, Authentic Italian - Cheese and Cured meet lovers heaven! 4/6/2008

I dined here last week with a friend who had recommended it and been there the week prior. The space was much warmer and has a nicer ambiance than it appears on the website - the lighting is much dimmer. We sat at a table however you can also sit at a bar and watch the chef's making pasta. The service was good - we had very nice servers and hosts - not sure why some people who reviewed weren't happy but we didn't experience that at all. The food was delicious - if you've ever been to Italy, than you'll appreciate the menu - it's very fresh. There were 3 of us and we shared 2 appetizers - one was some type of delicious bread topped with procciuto and burrata cheese - A-MA-ZING! The other was slices of salami, cheese, and fava beans. Then we each ordered a dish - two of us ordered pasta, and one ordered a pizza type dish. The dishes are heavy on cheese and/or meets. I would agree that the pasta portions were on the small side however, after the appetizers, bread, etc - none of us left hungry. We finished with a warm molten chocolate cake. By the way, they offer a large selection of wine - all Italian.\r \r If your idea of Italian food are the trattoria's of North Beach, then this may not be for you. But if you can appreciate REAL Italian - this will be a home run. I will definitely go back! Looks like reservations are a must here. Mangia! Pros: Fresh authentic Italian more

Read this before dining at Farina 2/1/2008

Farina is a well set-up, beautiful restaurant in the Mission with an inviting atmosphere and we had heard pretty good things about the food. However, when we visited Farina, we were very disappointed in the ?to cool? attitude displayed by the management staff. The way that the management treated their employees in front of the costumers (on two occasions) during our visit was both unprofessional and unacceptable. I would caution anyone reading this to think twice before supporting this type of attitude in our city. The food is average at best, except for the homemade pasta with pesto, and is for the most part, overpriced. Next time we dine out in the Mission, we will be going to Last Supper Club, Delfina, or Luna Park. All have just as good, if not better food, without the attitude. Pros: Great atmosphere Cons: Poor attitude; Average, over-priced food more

Not all that... 9/28/2007

Beautiful space, but only okay food. Portions seemed small for the price. My advice, fill up on the bread or you will leave hungry (or go to Olive Garden which is a better value - sad but true). Pros: Wonderful space and decor. Cons: Too pricey for what how much food you actually receive. more

Best Pasta outside of Italy, great service, nice wine list. Good foccacia. 9/3/2007

Wow. It takes superb service, food and atmosphere to receive a WOW in San Francisco and this place has it all. The design is exquisite, the food divine and the service exceptional. The foccacia melts in your mouth, the homemade pasta is like that I have had in Italy and the desserts are also lovely. We love that you can order several wines in a carafe which is perfect for dining of 2. They also have a private room upstairs that looked like a great place to hold a private dinner. This place will rise to the top in SF-I would dare to say best Italian food in SF. Reservations are recommended although we were able to get a table for 2 quite easily on Labor Day weekend. Pros: Great food, great service, great restaurant design, good outside dining Cons: Already recognized for being a great restaurant, this restaurant requires reservations more

possibly the best handmade pasta ever tried in US 6/29/2007

beautiful interior design and delicious authentic Italian food. The pesto handmade pasta is to die for, it melts in your mouth as well as Focaccia di Recco which is truly authentic ( I tried the original one at Manuelina in Recco). One focaccia for two or three people to share as an appetizer is more than enough. All fish is truly fresh. Please keep in mind that they are still waiting for the alchool licence.\r \r You you want to try the real Italian regional food, this is the place. Hopefully they will be able to keep the authenticity ! more
