Romantic, Relaxing Bistro 11/22/2008

A cozy bistro with reliable classics (especially good: roasted chicken, mussels in wine sauce, grilled steak, and codfish provencal). The owners have created an inviting and warm atmosphere, and they make an effort to get to know the large number of regulars, enhancing the neighborhood feel of the restaurant. Also, they've brought in friendly & helpful waitresses this year (replacing the rude hipster girls from their earlier days). more

Amazing Bistro, a hidden treasure. 12/27/2007

Great food at very reasonable prices. Their standards are fantastic and the specials never fail to please. Be sure to ask the owners to recommend a wine. The selection is fantastic and they know what they're talking about. A tad small for kids, so you may want to get a baby-sitter. However, a fantastic place to take a date (even if it's a date with the wife :-). Pros: Food, Price, Service more

Reliable, simple neighborhood spot 11/28/2007

This isn't anyone's idea of destination dining, but if you live in the neighborhood, and don't feel like cooking one night, it's a perfectly sweet little spot. Dishes are a lot like what you could cook at home, but the lovely staff, cute little back garden and general consistency of quality make it worthwhile--plus you don't have to do the dishes afterward. more

Not kids friendly 7/6/2007

Actually its just not the right place to take kids but where it is. Went there for brunch, the place is kind of small and I noticed others strollers that were definitely in the staff way, they tried to make jokes and worked around but were clearly not happy. We just moved in the neighborhood so I thought it was another Williamsburg attitude place but overall I had a good time and they were nice. The food was good and will for sure be back for a nice evening with my husband when we finally found a babysitter. Pros: Cute garden Cons: Too small and formal for kids more

Wonderful steak frites and other bistro French fare 4/30/2007

I frequently eat at Fanny's for brunch and dinner and have a wonderful experience every time. The steak frites (available all day) is wonderful and affordable at $14; the fish sandwich is deliciously crispy; a hamburger I ordered medium was cooked perfectly; the desserts are as sinful and tasty as they should be in a French restaurant. Though I'm not in love with their croque monsieur (try Gribouille instead), my boyfriend loves it. Other reviewers bring up issues with the waitstaff -- though they can seem a bit distant and perhaps even cold, 1) the owners French after all, and 2) I've still never been neglected and have always received my food on time, been asked if I wanted more bread, and had offers to refill our water/other beverages. I wouldn't let rumors of bad service dissuade you from checking out Fanny. Note: There's only one vegetarian entree option at dinner, so we tend to leave our pickier vegetarian friends at home when going to this restaurant. More resourceful vegetarians can make a meal out of their daily vegetarian soups, starter salads, and vegetable sidedishes. And brunch is definately veggie friendly provided one eats eggs! Pros: Food, especially Steak Frites and Fish Sandwich, Prices, Decor Cons: Sometimes aloof staff (though they're really not that bad), Lonely Patch of Graham Ave. more

Almost there - great food and decor, terrible waitstaff 4/7/2007

The decor is cozy, classy, a little dark, very comfortable. The back room has a lower ceiling and is great for a romantic dinner or a small gathering. One bonus is that I""ve felt comfortable bringing important guests in the evening, and stopping in for lunch while I wait for my laundry. The food has always been fantastic, burgers worth eating burgers for, incredible seafood stew and I've been known to insist that my dining companions get dessert even if they're not in the mood just so they can experience them (you HAVE to try the lavendar custard!!). The only downside I've seen is the service, which ranges from mediocre to a tad-too-casual for the ambience to downright horrible (I think it's the only time I've tipped below a base of 15%. If I'm spending $100 for two people I want bread plates and a clean fork for my entree. And no attitude). I don't know what's up with that as everything else seems very well thought out and cared about. I definitely recommend that you go, for the most part a wonderful experience, but if I keep getting bored, hipster waitstaff I might start looking elsewhere. Pros: An all around cozy, enjoyable experience Cons: Sub-par waitstaff on several occasions, especially for the price more

Salt bombs!!!! 1/28/2007

I went there last night - and was terribly disappointed! i had a nice fluffy salad of boston lettuce put in front of me and it was actually a salt bomb in diguise!!! My entree - more salt. so much salt. and i like salt!!! The waitsatff was unfriendly if not borderline bizarre - no smiles, no ""how is everything?"" just a curt, ""you want dessert?"" To be fair - my boyfriend liked his steak. Pros: not too crowded on a sat in williamsburg Cons: id rather wait 1 hr to eat at dumont or diner. more

Worst Service for blandest food! 12/2/2006

An overall terrible experience! After we got over our rude waitress, they fed us average food while charging us $10 for every bottle THEY assured us we can bring. Then when we found a disgusting olive pit from an eaten olive in our bread basket, the waitress shrugged it off and asked if we wanted more bread!! Who could eat at such a dirty place?!! Finally when we thought she was making amends with a free dessert for the birthday girl, we were charged for that too!! Even the crowd in this place was lame. It looks like it stepped right out of midtown and took its insipid drabness to brooklyn.....should have stayed away. Terribly mediocre with no allure. The only thing this place has going for it is that it's almost next door to the best bar ever! Pros: location Cons: food, service, outrageous corking fee, cash only more
