The Ettrick Deli is down the street from Virginia State University. They offer a good selection of subs, sandwiches, salads, fried chicken, and desserts. Everything is made to order, with the salads & desserts made fresh daily. They have amazing chicken salad (also made fresh, not canned or store-bought), coconut custard pie, and Philly cheesesteaks.
The only drawback is that there isn't any room for eating in ~ you can use the picnic tables out front if you'd like, and they're covered so you're protected from the weather, but there aren't many of them. Also, there is no delivery service. Most of the people phone in an order and then swing by to pick it up before taking it home. So if you're looking for a quick lunch or subs for dinner, give them a try.
