A Decade of Good Food 8/9/2009

I've been going to Castro's since Umberto bought the place over a decade ago and it's some of the best Tex-Mex this side of LA. (I grew up in LA). The Chicken Nachos and Tortas are really good. So it the Carnitas. The green sauce is mildly addictive. P.S. As a student, I ate there 2-3x a week for 4 years and have NEVER had the experiences described by other reviewers. For the Prospect Park uberstroller-vegan types, it's a Mexican dive folks, complete with Juan Gabriel blaring in the background. Repeat, it's a DIVE. Pros: Cheap, Good and Stupidly Consistant Cons: It's a dive. more

Terrible Service and 2+ Hours for Delivery 2/6/2009

Recently, we ordered from Castro's. It took them over 2 hours to deliver our food. They were unapologetic and unhelpful. There excuse was that they had ""two big tables"" to serve. It was without a doubt the single worst experience I have had with a restaurant in my 6 years of living and eating in Brooklyn. The food is not worth it. Avoid at all costs. more

IF I COULD GIVE 0 STARS I WOULD 12/2/2008

I am so irritated with Castro's every time I order from them. I have vowed on several occasions never to go back, but they are the nearest and cheapest Mexican food restaurant. My roommate and I just had a late night craving for some chips, guacamole and a cheese quesadilla. When the delivery person arrived, our bill was $15.15. Excuse me? I asked to speak to somebody at the restaurant who told me I had (unwillingly) ordered a large chip and a large guacamole and proceeded to give me this huge attitude about how ""everybody knows when you order chips and guacamole, the chips are going to cost money"". I'm sorry, I'm not going to pay nearly $10 for chips out of a bag and mediocre at best guacamole. Instead of trying to be helpful, she talked down to me and made me feel like an idiot. I let her know she has lost my business for good and she laughed at me. Thanks.\r \r Anyways, I'd advise you update the menu here. A plain quesadilla is not $1.00, it is $4.50. Chips are not $3, they are $5. And I'd advise all of you to take your business elsewhere. Bonita is delicious AND polite. more

Best and most authentic mexican food in Brooklyn. 9/27/2008

As a Mexican born and raised world traveler, I know that it is not easy to find the real thing when it comes to food that is fresh, clean, delicious, authentic, and served by friendly and modest people. The place was rated best by cityguide a few times, and it has gotten even better. The place has gone through a beautiful remodeling, the kitchen is as efficient as can be, and the clientele is low key, friendly, and this truly family restaurant is a joy to eat and spend some time in, in a genuine environment. Try it, and you'll be wanting to thank me. Pros: Fresh, clean food. Nothing out of the can. more

Enchi-Money 8/29/2008

This little nook of Mexican greatness is well worth the trip to Clinton Hill. Every time I go the Chicken Enchiladas get better and better. The outside patio just got a fresh coat and the added color finally makes the ambiance match the flavors. Castros is by far my favorite restaurant with the great service and amazing salsa. These other reviewers don't know whats up. Pros: Homemade Salsa, Outdoor Patio, Friendly Staff, Quick Service more

Be Very Careful Here 8/3/2007

It's not so much that the food is bad. They have a few good dishes, no doubt, but there is a tremendous problem with their service. I recently found something wrong with my food, I can't say what because of the rules of this site, and it was a major ordeal just to get up and walk out without paying. I wish I could tell you what happened, but I can tell you it was very humbling. more

Hygiene important to you? Stay away from Castros! 8/1/2007

I've been going to Castro's for several years, almost a decade. They have always had consistent food at unbeatable prices. I used to dream of their burritos! Unfortunately, the last three times I have gone (within the last six months), I have SEEN the cook/ cooks behind the counter, digging in noses, scratching at privates and other unholy acts while preparing the food! I DID let the other members of the staff know on each occasion what I had witnessed only to be blown off. Please keep in mind that I have been a very steady customer. Since they have remodeled their little hole in the wall they have changed a great deal. Keep your eyes open if you eat there and if you haven't and hygiene is important to you stay away!I cannot BELIEVE that people still eat here! I know it's convenient but are the obvious disgusting practices concerning cleanliness not an issue to people between the ages of 18-22? Hey Prattheads..give it a seconds worth of thought! They are working without gloves..drinkin beer while they make your burritos..the bathrooms are horrific..I just can't understand how ANYONE with eyes can eat there! Not even harping on the service issues...give some REAL restaurants in need a chance and your money..gross.. Pros: they USED to be the best burrito joint in brooklyn Cons: now the staff is committing disgusting acts while preparing food! more

Best Mexican in Clinton Hill 7/18/2007

Castro's is great. I haven't had a bad meal from them, and its much more consistent and affordable than Los Politos. Try the cheese enchiladas with green sauce, anything with carnitas, or one of the HUGE burritos. You won't be disappointed. The service is sometimes slow, but the food is worth the wait every time. Their delivery is usually quick, too. Pros: Food is great Cons: Service sometimes slow more

Great food 12/23/2006

Try to avoid the more basic things like tacos and try to explore the lesser known dishes. The shrimp Mexicana is unbeleiveable - the shrimp are crunchy - not stringy or soggy - they pop in your mouth and the flavor permeates the rest of the sauce. Anything in the salsa verde (green sauce) will excite you and the burritos are HUGE - like footballs gone mad. \r \r The staff is friendly, it is amazing to watch the guys behind the counter work - like a wonderful dance. \r \r As the guy below did - don't be too finicky and difficult. You want that service? Go somewhere else and pay more. This family owned business is worth far more than that type of treatment. \r \r It's an easy going environment but can be a bit noisy - that's not a complaint though. more

The best, the best - oh, and the best. 12/22/2006

This place does what it does well - serve incredible food with a deep and rich history. If you want to ""customize"" your order like you would with a place that charges 3 x the price - Castro's isn't the joint for you.\r \r If you want to take in amazing smells, eat food that will give great memories and feel great then go ahead in.\r \r My father, my girlfriend and I go there just about Friday night. They treat us well, they serve us fast, they don't skimp on the servings, we always leave in food comma.\r \r Oh, and we've been going there for 8 years. Pros: All - I am a regular Cons: Can't think of any more

Not bad if you like getting ripped off! 11/24/2006

So, one night I decided to try it after reading reviews here. I was craving a steak/shrimp burrito. I walk in. Place looks good and smells great. I ask for a half shrimp, and half steak burrito. I was already shocked to see that the shrimp burrito was $11.50 at a ""hole in the wall"" restaurant! I am then informed that there will be an additional $3.00 charge for the steak. So I reply that I just want half the shrimp of a shrimp burrito, and the rest steak. She says she knows, thats the price. I'm like alright, I gotta try it at least once. I also asked that the all the trimmings come inside, like guac/sour/pico. She says fine. So I walk home excited with my first ever $14 burrito thinkin this better be good. I was dissapointed from the start. I found the sour cream simply spread on top, and the guac and pico on the side. I like eating a burrito with my hands, and find it easier if everything is already inside. Anyways, the flavors were good. It was very tasty. But I felt jipped and not cared for. That is the overall theme with this place. Maybe their heads have gotten too big. Maybe they're just dumb. \r \r I went back one more time thinking I could get better results with a more basic order. I ordered delivery this time. One grilled chicken burrito. Nothing special. They list grilled chicken as a meat choice next to all the others. My burrito was supposed to cost $6. They have an $8 minimum for delivery. So, I got a taco for $2 too. The delivery man shows up with a bill for $11.55. I'm like hold on, I'm calling them. The lady promptly tells me that I asked for ""chicken breast."" I say ""No, I asked for grilled chicken."" She says, ""Oh, there is an extra charge."" I tell her ""You should tell people that over the phone."" \r \r I think I could fly home and get a burrito for cheaper before they get my order right! Pros: Tasty food, open late. Cons: Bad service, ticky-tack charges. more

authentic & very tasty 1/24/2006

Good Down Home Mexican 3/11/2005

I live in San Francisco for 14 years and this is the restaurant that is most typical of the kind of Mexican places in the Mission that I loved. My favorite there was La Victoria and this place reminds me of that. I love the fact that they have cabrito (goat) as I grew up on that in south Texas. Their chipolte chicken is just delicious. Regarding ambience, it is great if you long for the down home wobbly tables cramped Mexican places that you grew up with. more

Love this place! 7/7/2004

Castro's fills the void of good mexican places in this neighborhood. The food is fresh and good - and the back patio is nice too: you feel like you're not even in NYC anymore. Watch out for the scrappy orange cat though - he bites. Pros: food, patio more

¡Que Sabor Rico! 2/15/2003

Get the burrito especial con chorizo. You can't go wrong with this spicy sausage, better than the chicken or beef which would be much better if it were seared rather than limply fried on the skillet. This is one of the few places in NYC where they steam the tortilla and then stick the whole burrito under the broiler to toast the top. Try one and you'll scoff at burritos served in the city's other so-called Mexican restaurants. Pros: Cheap., Authentic. more

Excellent 9/6/2002

I LOVE Castro's!!! Excellent salsa verde and Santa Fe burrito. You can't get any better than this!!! more
