Nakama is a fun place to eat. The atmosphere is young and trendy and as a result, the place is almost always packed. You should make reservations...

Mixed Feelings about Nakama's Sushi 9/6/2006

I am a sushi fanatic, so was excited to have some during my visit to Pittsburgh, but I did not expect much because I have heard from some chowhounds that Pittsburgh is not strong in Asian food restaurants. We ordered a few rolls between us during the lunch hour, as well as a seaweed salad. Because Nakama puts so much priority on the steakhouse part of the restaurant, there is only one table for four in the restaurant for sushi eaters, so we had to sit at the bar. If you just want sushi, you can't sit in the steakhouse area. This was a bummer, because it made it harder for me to chat with my companions. Our seaweed salad was $5, and it was tiny. The amount was fine for one serving, but was expensive for what you got. The spicy yellowtail roll was fresh and delicious, also affordable. The inside out rolls are the best deal on the sushi menu. Our Hawaiian roll was scrumptious and so was the Caterpillar roll. The eel was fresh, which is something many sushi places aren't able to provide. Presentation was decorative. I had a few issues here. If there is one pet peeve I have it is smoked salmon in my sushi. I can't blame Nakama for this because I ordered a Philadelphia roll (JB is my usual favorite) because I had forgotten that Philadelphia rolls use smoked salmon and are not the same as JB rolls. My enjoyment was tainted because of that. Their menu didn't detail what was in the Philly roll so I was caught off guard. I asked the bartender and he explained that none of their rolls use regular salmon except for the by the peice sushi. I am wondering if he was mistaken because there are quite a few rolls on the menu that included salmon, and if they all used smoked salmon, it would ruin the taste of the rolls. My other issue is the sushi selection. While ok, it could use expanding (I must again grant that the steakhouse is the primary focus of this restaurant). I also would want to see some sushi lunch specials in addition to the cooked dish lunch specials available. This would certainly be a good place to grab a drink one evening and enjoy some bites of sushi while you're at it. The website has a menu: http://www.eatatnakama.com It also lists discounts and events. more

Hip Japanese restaurant 4/14/2006

Great Japanese restaurant on the South Side. Their chefs are authentic and entertaining. My kids enjoyed watching our chef flip shrimp and catch them in his pocket! It is kind of hard to hear other people at your table, as it tends to get quite loud in there. We get served fairly promptly. My family loves their sushi. Also, the kids enjoy the light up ice cubes for their drinks, although the cube itself costs $5.50. The food is pricey, so we go there for special occasions. You can get great deals on appetizers (half off) and drinks ($1 off) during their happy hour. Sign up for their newsletter for special offers, too. You get a free dinner on your birthday. Parking can be hard to find on Carson Street, depending on what time you are arriving. more

Good Sushi and Habachi Grill 8/20/2005

I've been to several Japanese steakhouses, and I enjoyed this one as well. The food is great and the sushi is fresh. The service was also excellent. It is new and has a very eye-catching interior. But I have had very similar food for a much smaller price. And every time I have gone there is a wait of some kind and the bar is always crowded. But it is a fun place with an energetic and modern atmosphere as compared to the calm, traditional ambiance of typical habachi grills. more
