Horrible haircut and constant upsell pressure 5/10/2011

SUGGEST TO AVOID - I have been going to this salon on a walk-in basis occasionally over the last 4 years. My schedule is quite busy so I usually don't have time to arrange beforehand. The cuts I've gotten in the past have been good to very good until yesterday, First, I walked in as I have in the past and the receptionist and the woman training the receptionist were not very friendly and in fact, the trainer was dismissive and downright unfriendly. She wrote my name in the book without telling me of wait time or availability. I had to ask about the wait and cost and she told me she made an ""appointment"" for me and it would be $35. I asked for the walk-in rate and she said I had to wait (though the salon had just opened and there were stylists sitting and standing around.) After ten minutes when I was about to leave, they assigned me to a stylist who was friendly and seemed to understand my description of the cut I wanted (long relaxed layers) and even showed him a photo. I explained that due to my disability, I needed a good cut that I could wash and go without drying. When my hair was washed and I was at his station, he suggested I have a blow-dry but I said I prefer to let it dry naturally and also didn't have time. He would not stop and kept repeatedly saying I should let him blow-dry my hair especially since I can't do it myself (nice touch using my disability to upsell). I am not exaggerating in saying he didn't let up. I had long hair to the middle of my back, should have been fairly straightforward. I was so uncomfortable with the constant pressure that I didn't even focus on the 10 minute haircut or the fact he didn't even bother to show me the back of my hair in the mirror. He spent more time upselling than on my hair. I tipped him, paid and dashed off after he tried to sell me hair products as well. What a disaster! My ends dried and ends are sticking out in different directions, a horrible cut. I have long thick hair so to have it lay so oddly is unusual. I can roll out of bed and go out the door and my hair looks fine. How someone could mess up this cut so badly is beyond me. My hair before the cut (uncut for 9 months) looked better than the cut I got yesterday. This has taught me a huge lesson-never assume that a chain salon has a minimum standard of competence and professionalism! more

Terrific Salon- Melody is awesome! 12/2/2010

I have been going to Dramatics for the last 8 years with Melody as my stylist. She is soooo talented. She will always listen to what the customer has to say and suggest colors, and the placement of highlights that look best on YOU. Now I tend to be more adventerous than most when it comes to my hair, but my best friend who is super picky goes to Melody as well and has always been very happy with her work. more

Melody is the BEST!!! 11/16/2010

I went to Dramatic to do my color and had such a lovely experience with one of the stylist ""Melody"". I was very nervous about having highlights put in my hair because of my past experiences. Melody has a terrific eye for color. She saw my skin and picked out a wonderful sample for my hair. Not only she did wonderful job on the highlights but also her personality was so pleasant. I am completely happy with her service. Thank you so much for making me look pretty and youthful. I recommend her highly.. more

Love this place 11/14/2010

I've been going to Dramatics on 57th for over 7 years...I moved to the neighborhood and stumbled in one day to see if they could fix some bad highlights I got from out of town. I was assigned to Melody and she saved the day! I've been a loyal customer ever since...Melody is an awesome colorist and stylist, I like to change things up and she always works with me to ensure that I get exactly what I want. I've worked with a few of the stylists there and they are always accommodating. I'm very surprised about some of these reviews, I have to say that all of my friends that have gone to the salon on my recommendation have been very happy and continue to go back! more

the best experience ive had 8/28/2010

naturally weve all had bad experiences in beauty salons they cut too much, your hair turns orange from a bad dye job. but not this place. topaz is my stylist and i went in a little nervous but hoping this would be it in finding the right person for me to do my hair. when i met topaz her eyes were so kind and i knew she was the right fit for me. shes a little older than i am but i felt so comfortable with her. we had a great consult and she explained what needed to be done and i told her my fears of salons and...clowns. she reassured me that my cut will be what i wanted and it truly was. ive recommended my sisters and my mother to topaz and they love her too. im so happy i found dramatics on 57th and topaz! more

Warning! The Worst Salon in NYC!!! Use at your own risk! 6/19/2010

If you enjoy your hair and like it looking good, read this, learn from it and, DO NOT GO to this salon. Pros: You can learn from my mistakes! Cons: If you want your hair ruined, this is the place for that! more

Less than impressed.... 6/13/2010

Been to this place twice and will not be coming back. First time I visited I got a haircut with Shine which turned out ok. However, I was really annoyed that I was upselled to get a conditioning treatment that cost $30 and it did nothing special. I actually get better results using my Loreal leavin than I did with this ""Shea butter"" conditioner. Decided to go back to get highlights from Melody. This was a huge mistake. They charged me $40 more than I was quoted on the phone, the stylist worked on several other people, didn't listen to what I asked for, and I didn't get the results I wanted. Plus, I left salon with half wet frizzy hair because she didn't have time to blow dry and was going to charge me more to do it. I do not recommend this place. Pros: Got a call after, offered to re-do highlights but I declined Cons: bad highlights, over booked stylist that did not LISTEN more

Don't do it 11/18/2009

I have long straight hair... it's hard to mess up a haircut on me. All I asked for was a trim... I came out with completely uneven hair everywhere. Also... the guy who washed my hair might as well have washed my face too... water everywhere and it felt like he was malesting my head and neck... like why was he even touching my neck???... I felt violated afterwards. Don't come here... it's not even a real discount compared to other places. Plus, now I have to spend the next two months growing my hair out... Cons: Terrible hair cut more

Snobby, hidden fees, and poor customer service. Can you ask for more? 2/8/2009

Although the haircuts themselves may be reasonable, I agree with the other bad reviews which say that they do there best to nickle & dime you starting with the ""walk-in"" price of $20 for a guy's haircut. They made me pay for $35 with their more ""experienced"" stylist because I walked in at 12:27 and asked if I could get the next available stylist. They neglected to mention that they ""made an appointment"" for me at 12:30 and then made me pay for the more experienced one. Furthermore they charged me for shampooing and conditioning which they did not tell me up front. I thought it was part of the cut. In the end the simple haircut I could have gotten in Chinatown (with one hour massage) for $25 ended up costing over a $100. Pros: Their pros is the mediocre haircuts Cons: Overpriced if you factor in hidden costs, Long waits, poor customer service. more

Excellent Hair Cuts 6/25/2008

I've been going to this Dramatics for almost two years now and I find the staff to be efficient, courteous, and helpful. The stylists are fantastic and the prices are very reasonable. I'm a busy guy who doesn't always find time to make appointments in advance and I always find this Dramatics location to be very accommodating. My hair cuts here have been consistently well done and the prices are less expensive than other salons and barbers that I've tried in Midtown. This is the best place for a guy to go for a cut in NYC as far as I'm concerned. Pros: Talanted professionals, great service, friendly, accommodating, & affordable Cons: They can get very busy more

Stay Away!!! 5/13/2008

Can you get a good cut at Dramatics? Yes, but you may not get the cut you want, and in terms of customer service, you will not get what you bargained for. I went to Dramatics for a few years because it was all I could afford, but they pride themselves on nickle and diming their customers and all complaints are treated with disdain. If you do not confirm every step of the way the pricing for each service, they will rip you off. For instance, they advertise a walk in price, but if you call and say, ""are you open, do you have any free stylists? I'll be right over."" They consider that an appointment and charge you the extra fee for appointments (by the way, they do the same if you simply walk in and tell them you'll wait until someone becomes available). I've also had them give me to a more tenured stylist and charge me more for him/her without letting me know. I've been charged for a deep conditioner when the shampooer simply asked if I'd like a conditioner; and I've been charged $60 extra for drying my hair. When I complained about each of these ""the manager"" wasn't available and the receptionist told me she couldn't do anything for me, when they weren't being outrightly rude. Pros: It is possible to get a good cut. Cons: Deceitful pricing practices, disdainful staff and management, heavy handed upselling of products. more

great value, considering the prices for haircuts in this city. 2/29/2008

I went to high priced salon... paid $110 for a men's haircut... only to be unhappy with the cut. So the next day I was walking through my neighborhood, and found Dramatics on 57th street. So walked in and ask if some one can help, I explained my situation and the girl at the frontdesk said sure and introduced me to one of the stylist. And to my surprise I was very-very happy! Needless to say I've been going to Dramatics ever since. Thanks Dramatics for saving my hair!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! more

STAY AWAY--Take your hair, and your business elsewhere 1/21/2008

I live in the neighborhood and I thought I would give this place a try--what a mistake. I asked for a very simple style--a classic bob, one that every hairstylist is expected to know how to do. The woman who cut my hair was extremely inexperienced, and one side was actually longer than another. The stylist also completely botched my bangs. I asked if another hairstylist could fix my bangs and the manager refused. I tried repeatedly to speak to the owner and was also rebuffed by various other employees. All in all, the hairstylist's and the management's attitude was one of not caring--they just wanted me out of there. One thing is for sure--I will never set foot in DRAMATICS nyc again. Pros: none that i can think of Cons: bad hair, bad attitude more

Awesome Highlights! 1/18/2008

I recently went to this salon after my friend recomended her stylist. Her name was Tequila, I was a little weary at first but my highlights turned out to be the best highlights I've had since moving to NewYork. She listened to to me and did everything I wanted. The color turned out GREAT! I was really happy with my highlights. Everyone there was so nice with the exception of that blonde receptionist that is SUPER rude! I am going back even with the rude receptionist, it's totally worth it! more

I loved this place. 10/13/2007

I was visiting from Atlanta and asked for a ""New York haircut"". The stylist, Splash, gave my unusual request in depth thought and discussion. I got the best haircut I've had in years. The price wasn't cheap like Supercuts, but it was reasonable and the cut and service were more than worth it. The style still looks great, one week later and after washing and restyling it myself. They were backed up when I first walked in, and the front desk went out of their way to accommodate me when I said I couldn't come back until 10 minutes after one of their last openings. I went in 50 minutes before closing on a Saturday, when everyone had been working all day on a very busy day, yet everyone from the front desk to the stylist found the time and personality to be upbeat and friendly, as well as the time and skill to do their jobs well. Very fun place too, where all the employees have nicknames related to the entertainment business. Pros: Great place for a haircut! Cons: None. more

$55 for a SIMPLE Hairdrying straight 9/25/2007

Chop Shop of the worst kind. The first question I was asked is ""did they give you a price at the front desk?"" and when I said no the ""hairdresser of the year"" decided I was the ""loser of the year"" and quoted $55 for a simple blowdry that Inormally get at a much better salon for $35. I needed to get a blowdry for a work function in an hour otherwise iwould have walked out. Cons: Dishonest, Gossipy, Catty, Non Proffessional, Not Skillfull Staff more

I've been going to this salon for 4 years and always got great results with Omega. Ever since he left for London, I've been trying different stylists at this salon, hoping to find another Omega or at least someone descent. Although, I've never left unhappy, I never left satisficied with my style. The front desk area is always a breif and quick experience forcing you to hurry up. more

Forgive me, Hair--I have sinned 9/18/2006

I should have known. I am in my late 20's and I live in NY and yet, I decided to save a few bucks and pop into Dramatics on 57th. For Color. Pros: Guys with short hair can prob get a good cut Cons: The skill level from the receptionist to the stylists is subpar at best. more

Average 7/19/2006

I had been going dramatics for 4 years to one person. I never had a problem until her personal life started to interfer with my time. She would leave me longer than she should would product in my hair because she's on her cell phone. The hairstylist gossip about one another in front of clients, which is just unprofessional. But it just got worst after I asked for a full head of highlights. I have black hair and I wasn't expecting to be blonde. What I wanted was a warm carmel/golden color. Like Eva mendes, jessica alba... she told me she would lift me hair slowly so my hair won't get to fried. 1st go at it was OK. my hair was a little fried because she lifted it lighter than what i wanted that she had to reapply a semi-perm color gloss to drop the color from being too light. i had to get my base lighten, she actually made my color auburn brown. =/ Pros: take walk in's Cons: gossiping group, loud more
