Editorial review from Citysearch 3/10/2014

PORTIA by far (and I've been to all the so-called Best) IS THE BEST most AWESOME HAIR COLORIST in ghe world!!!\r \r What she did for me today, all 3 1/2 hrs is AMAZING! Worth every second and cost, sheus Senior stylist and Color Educator for all the branches. Therefore all their corists are well trained...and creative. Everyone walked out halpy and bbeautiful today.\r \r I will NEVER GO ELSEWHERE unless of course Porscha does but she's auite halpy there so we ain't gong anywhere!!!\r \r Also, I LOVE MY HAIRCUT!!!\r \r I no longer have to envy other blondes. I got EXACTLY WHAT I DREAMED OF FINALLY AFTER 40 years at fancier salons. I much prefer having SUPER HAIR than fancy coat-check!!!! more

Nasty Girl 5/25/2012

Initially I was satisfied with Portia as a stylist - always good haircuts and decent color. She listened to what I wanted and then did it. And then...ohmygod - she did a 360 turnaround on me - which left me shocked and furious. I became unemployed so was on a tight budget. I went in for a haircut and though I needed to retouch my roots I just wanted a haircut as I was going to take care of the roots myself. She didn't like this but hey.... She didn't realize I was watching her in the mirror - she made a really disgusted face at me and then proceeded to dish out major attitude. I should have left when I saw that grimace but stupidly I didn't. The haircut was ok but her unprofessional and rude behavior was so outrageous that I vowed - never again. I went back to the salon and saw another stylist and Portia gave me one of those 'if looks could kill.' Aside from Portia - unless you love ear splitting music go early in the day - the later it is the louder the music. I also tried to meet with the manager to let him know how awful Portia's behavior was but it was made abundantly clear to me that he wasn't going to give me the time of day. Their loss - I've told all my friends to stay away from this salon - and most especially from Portia - as we used to say, ""...she thinks who she is."" NOT. more

Dramatics NYC 5th Ave... Excellent stylist Cobra 6/12/2011

I had the best stylist ?Cobra? doing my hair and I have been in lots of different places in NY, but he gave me exactly what I wanted, he understood how I wanted my hair cut and colored. I got amazing highlights and gorgeous cut. My husband liked my hair for the first time; he said I finally found a good professional that is worth every penny. I will definitely go back for my touch up. I totally recommend, and now my girlfriend is waiting her turn Thank you Cobra for making me look irresistible :)) more

I recently went to this salon for a little trim and ended up getting my haircut by a stylist named ""freedom"" I should have nown at that point this was a mistake-but thought its just a trim-so it would be ok. I ended up with one side of my hair an inch longer than the other. I didn't realize until the next day after washing and drying it. I went back and told Freedom the problem. She was so nasty to me said sit down and started hacking away at my hair. Her attitude was horrible-She literally started picking up my hair and cutting like a maniac!!! It was so uneven and badly hacked at anyone would have known there was a problem. She was acting like I was a problem-but her cut was awfull!!! At that point i went to the manager very upset and explained the situation. He did nothing and was clueless how to handle the situation. Yes-this really is the bottom of the barrel in Salons-These hairstylists come from a local beauty school and are badly trained in both cutting and etiquette. Stay Away!!!!! Spend a few extra bucks and go to a professional salon. Freedom needs a new career!! more

Not recommended for your precious hair 2/17/2010

I walked in for a style. The stylist spoke to me while doing someone else's hair, did not get a sit down comfortable talk at all. I went for a perm (large curls) also called Wave. Ended up with dry frizzy hair looking as if I just woke up from sleep. I paid $300 for that?!!?? the breakout of the cost was $150 for the perm, $50 for products and of course the perm did not cover the little slight trimming ($45) she RECOMMENDED I did and the $50 courtesy tip. To add to my woes when I checked the pricing on the website....hahahah. Cons: Not personalized, awful looking style and marked up prices. more

Portia is INCREDIBLE 11/10/2009

I wandered into Dramatics on 5th Avenue over two years ago when another salon's stylist stood me up. I was given to Portia who instantly reorganized her schedule so that we could recreate my look. Two years later, I am in her chair once a month without fail. Pros: Great price, creativity, expertise, consistency, Portia Cons: Loud, not all stylists are equal more

absolute crud!!! 7/20/2009

Truly terrible stylists who talk really loudly, curse and act like children, seemingly without any clue that they are at work. One stylist, with very curly, long hair that seems to be highlighted blonde (sorry, I don't remember her name) was INCREDIBLY classless and rude and had absolutely no idea what she was doing. Better off going to super cuts than let her cut your hair. I have been to enough stylists to know when someone just doesn't have any talent and she doesn't. I have also tried 2 other stylists there and was unimpressed, although they were vastly better than her. Better to pay a bit more or try another salon that has actually tried to train their employees. Pros: cheap Cons: everything else more

Harley is flawless 2/11/2009

I've read the other comments on here and felt compelled to share my experience I had today at Dramatics NYC on 5th Ave. I had rather long hair for a guy--a short ponytail. I was anxious about getting my hair cut, but was ready for a change. I requested Harley, whom I had selected off of their website because he had hair that looked like i wanted mine to look. Safe enough, right? Well, he also turned out to be the manager--doubly safe. He listened as I told him what I wanted and assured me that I'd be in great hands. Well, I was!! Harley wa thorough, precise, caring, thoughtful, and incredibly in touch with how I was doing. He continually asked me if I was okay, if I liked where he was going, if i was comfortable with the length or wanted to go shorter. An absolute dream. And the final product was perfect! Se x y, trimmed, with a great shape, and low maintenance! I had three people at dinner that night tell me that it's the best haircut I've ever had. I couldn't agree more!!!! Pros: Harley, lovely receptionist, friendly staff, cutting edge Cons: music can be loud if you're easily bothered by that ( I had a blast!) more

NO NO 7/15/2008

I came here because a friend I work with told me they were great and a good price. I paid 175$ for higlights only. I told the woman I wanted to have a dark ash brown color with a few light sparkles in my hair, I brought a picture and everything. I also told her I hated red and my brown color always fades to red so i wanted her to do her best to cover it up. I left with a light brown hair and my light streaks were red orange and I looked like a zebra. On top of that they charge you 20$ to blowdry your hair so after paying 175 for something i completely did not want I was not about to pay an extra 20. I left with a WET head and an even worse hair color than before. I had to wait a week and the dry it all dark bown myself since i could not afford to have it fixed and take the chance of my hair looking like sickness fluid again. Yes my friends said the color was of ""sickness"" and another told me I looked like I had ""Old"" hair and i'm only 22. Stay away unless you dont care what about what your hair looks like Pros: good location Cons: dont get what you want, 20$ to walk with a dry head more

Stay Away!!! 5/13/2008

Can you get a good cut at Dramatics? Yes, but you may not get the cut you want, and in terms of customer service, you will not get what you bargained for. I went to Dramatics for a few years because it was all I could afford, but they pride themselves on nickle and diming their customers and all complaints are treated with disdain. If you do not confirm every step of the way the pricing for each service, they will rip you off. For instance, they advertise a walk in price, but if you call and say, ""are you open, do you have any free stylists? I'll be right over."" They consider that an appointment and charge you the extra fee for appointments (by the way, they do the same if you simply walk in and tell them you'll wait until someone becomes available). I've also had them give me to a more tenured stylist and charge me more for him/her without letting me know. I've been charged for a deep conditioner when the shampooer simply asked if I'd like a conditioner; and I've been charged $60 extra for drying my hair. When I complained about each of these ""the manager"" wasn't available and the receptionist told me she couldn't do anything for me, when they weren't being outrightly rude. Pros: It is possible to get a good cut. Cons: Deceitful pricing practices, disdainful staff and management, heavy handed upselling of products. more

Consistently great haircuts at even better prices 4/8/2008

I have seen two different stylists at this location. First I saw Foxy back in October. I received a fabulous hair cut from her. More recently I saw Chase, who also gave me an amazing cut. I would see either Foxy or Chase again in a second. They both listened to what I wanted, and before doing anything crazy (like cutting off my hair!) they told me what they were thinking and asked for my opinion. Pros: quick service, great prices Cons: music can get a bit old more

Harley is the best Stylist out there! 3/27/2008

I have to say..after reading all these bogus reviews about the salon I felt compelled to write. I have went to Harley for the past 3 years and not once have I ever had but an amazing outcome! I am OBSESSED with being a Blonde and he gets it perfect each and every time. In terms of cut, whether I have been short or long, I always come out looking Amazing. When I have wanted Great Lengths extensions he is a perfectionist to a T. Although I can't speak for others when seeing different stylists, I know Harley as perfectionist himself, which would mean he would would have noone but the best working for him and the Dramatics franchises around the city. For every one (1) bad comment, I am sure there are 100 good ones from people who don't take the time to write on a board...they just go back! Trust me everyone - After trying so many salons around the city...I have found my home in will too! Pros: Expertise Cons: Time Mangement more

Employees clearly writing reviews, b/c this place is horrible! STAY AWAY!!! 3/25/2008

It's very clear that the employees at Dramatics have started posting their most recent ""positive"" reviews b/c this place is seriously horrible. Dramatics is cheap for a reason - the decor is cheap, the products are cheap, the stylist look cheap and the hair cuts are cheap....and you def get what you pay for at this place. Dramatics isnt exactly overflowing with refinement, style or remember that before you chose to get your hair styled here. more

Great stylist 3/11/2008

Although I can't vouch for any other stylist at this location, I regularly go to Foxy and she is certainly 5 stars in my book. I knew she was a professional the very first time I went to her; she took the time to figure out what I wanted and she was friendly and cool throughout the entire cut. I originally went to Dramatics because I needed a cut at the last minute and was in the neighborhood. Now I go to Foxy once every couple of weeks and she keeps my hair looking great. Her rate is a steal for the cut you get too; way more worth it than my old stylist at John Allen's Tribeca. Pros: Foxy, her price Cons: Horrible music sometimes more

Beware!! I ended up with purple hair! 12/14/2007

After explicitly saying that I did not want any red highlights, my stylist decided to color most of my hair (which was supposed to be light brown) chocolate rasberry..which really just looked purple. I said brown, she said ok, and then used purple. Then she acted surprised and disappointed that I didn't like it, never even ackowledged or apologized for completely ignoring what I asked for and doing what she felt like doing. I had brought in a picture of what I wanted, but she ignored my instructions and I walked out looking like a freak. I only paid because I was in shock, and now I completely regret it. I had to go to another salon to have it fixed, because after coming home, coming out of shock, realizing the two thick bleach blonde highlights she gave me made me look like a skunk, and reading so many terrible reviews.. I didn't trust them enough to go back and make them fix their mistakes. Now- I have very dark brown hair because it was the only color that would cover the purple..and I can't do anything about it for a few weeks. Im miserable.. and will never go back. THEY DON""T LISTEN.. DO NOT GO THERE. I seriously think that the only people that have written good reviews are actually dramatics stylists pretending to be customers to boost their ratings...My sister went there for a trim a few weeks ago, and they butchered her hair. In fact, when asked if she wanted bangs, she said No, I hate bangs.. and 5 minutes later the guy not only gave her bangs, but asked ""so how do you like the bangs?"" - almost mocking her. Save yourself the agony, and go somewhere else. Dramatics is terrible. Pros: easy to make an appointment, because customers don't return Cons: everything - the stylists ignore what you want and do whatever they are in the mood to do. more

I am very very happy right now! 11/15/2007

I have been living in NY for two years and was extremely nervous about getting my hair cut here because I had someone do it back home. I had been to Dominican places to get a trim. I had been growing my hair for the last four years but I decided to trade in my long hair for something short. My roommate goes to this location all the time and she recommended it to me. I decided to give it a shot after hearing of this place from my roommate and a co-worker. I made an appointment and later my roommate insisted for me to request Kiss. I called back and she was booked and I was set up with Foxy. I did not want to wait and something felt right so I went that evening and Foxy took care of me. Pros: Great location, friendly and caring staff, not a long wait Cons: You can not tip on your credit card more

HAIR HORROR!!! 8/1/2006

Oh my, without any thought the most horrific experience i've had at any salon!!! I should have listened to the other reviews, as they mostly say the same, but it was close to my work so I went anyway. BELIEVE THE REVIEWS! This place is truly the worst salon in New York. You ask me what's bad? WHAT ISN'T? The cut, the shape, the color, the style. But the reviews that talk about the color are really the ones to pay attention to. I figured, how bad could they be? BAD!! I'll never make that mistake again. It's like they don't understand what color is what. Take the advice of the reviews and go anywhere but here. It was a disaster!! I know I've learned my lesson. Pros: they are close to my work... but probably not yours! Cons: EVERYTHING! A horrific experience from top to bottom, so bad I actually felt the need to write this review, which I never do. The worst Salon in NYC more

WORST Hair Cut and Color anywhere! 7/31/2006

This place is horrible. The cut was disastrous and the color was even worse!! I've never been to a salon that has absolutely no clue what color is what. Save your money and color your hair yourself, believe me it'll be better than this place! Pros: Nothing Cons: THE WORST CUT AND THE WORST COLOR YOU WILL EVER HAVE! THEY ARE COLOR BLIND!@ more

NOt good 7/31/2006

Not the place you want to go if you want a good haircut, and their colorist is pathetic. Bad bad bad color and i have been to many places, any place is better then this... stay clear if you care about your hair at all. Pros: i can't think of any, maybe a somewhat ok price, but do you really want to pay for someone messing up your hair??? Cons: the color and the cut, what more do i have to say? more
