This was my second time at Douzo: the first time I loved the food and the service. This time showed that like many restaurants that get popular quickly, Douzo has not been able to...

Editorial review from GrubHub 1/17/2014

The food is always great when it comes to sushi! I love their seaweed salads!! Service is great and rite on time based on Grub Hub website. Wish the service fee wasn't $6.99 though... more

Love this place. Hands down the best mid-priced sushi in Boston. You can't go wrong with their spicy salmon or eel avo rolls! My go-to sushi joint in the city. more

Always very tasty and fresh sushi. Love their Dragon roll and steamed shumai more

Don't go to Douzo - Its an utter waste of time 9/21/2010

The decor of the establishment is bland. It isn't particularly elegant, the service does not justify the price, and the place is extremely small. The spicy seafood salad is tiny, the rolls have too much rice and not enough sushi (an indicator of cheap ownership). The food was mediocre at best. I would not recommend it. I have eaten sushi at at least a hundred locations from California to New York, Japan, and Korea. For a truly authentic sushi place, that has healthy portions, a clean elegant decor, and excellent service, try A Table for All Seasons. Forget Douzo, its an overpriced, stuffy little place with an unwelcoming atmosphere, that has larger social aspirations than it does culinary ones. more

Douzo Review 4/7/2010

Huge fan of this place, however it is a bit pricey. The location is basically right off of the Back Bay train station, therefore making it a hot spot for late night dinners practically any day of the week. Take a date here, grab some quick but good sushi, or just sit by the bar for some after work hour drinks. I've only been here on a Thursday night and business was bustling, which I like seeing over an empty and quite dining room. However this does mean you should be prepared to wait a while if you visit Thurs-Sat, so try making reservations if you can. Even waiting by the bar gets tricky on these days, since it's somewhat small and gets crowded very easily. Pros: romatic settings with dim lighting, good sushi Cons: pricey more

Amazing Sushi!!! 2/12/2010

Before going to Douzo, we were big fans of sushi, but pretty much stuck to the basics. At Douzo, we ordered the Omakase (where the chef creates a plate of whatever he chooses) for $70 (to split). It was the best, melt in your mouth sushi we have ever had! The fish was incredibly fresh and we found ourselves loving the eel and their specialty rolls. The service was great both times we went with our server being kind enough to explain what everything on the platter was (repeatedly!!). We would recommend Douzo to anyone and, although we wouldn't mind trying another sushi restaurant in Boston, we can't force ourselves to stray from Douzo!!! Pros: everything Cons: nothing more

Overrated Restaurant: style, but very little content. 1/17/2010

I don't hate this place, but I don't quite get all the 5-star reviews, either. I work nearby, so I've stopped in a few times (for take-out, post-work drinks with co-workers. and dinner with friends), but I have yet to be completely satisfied with my experience. Sure, the place is pretty and the food taste almost as good as it looks (What can I say. I'm a sucker for presentation), but I still think Douzo is a case of style over content, i.e. hot looks but tepid personality. The last time I went there for dinner, our party of four was seated quickly and our order was taken within a reasonable amount of time. We waited a little longer than what might have been expected considering it was a weeknight and they weren't horrible busy but hey...these things happen. No biggie. So the food came. It looked lovely and it was very good but hardly amazing. No one checked on our table after they served us and when it was time for the check we waited. And waited. When we finally got our waiter's attention and asked for check, he promised it immediately. Then we waited some more. Literally half-an-hour went by between clean plates and the bill, which wouldn't have been so bad had we not waited another 30-minutes (after speaking with the hostess, etc) for the waiter to return with very little apology. If I didn't think there were a million other places in the area that I could get better sushi (or a better deal, a better atmosphere, a better experience, etc.) I might try them again. However, Since this is hardly the case, I'll leave this place to those of you who must have more time and money to waste than I do. Pros: Convenient location and sleek appearance. Cons: Slow service and mediocre everything else more

delicious! great decor! great service! 10/28/2009

my favorite sushi in town, by far. more

Best sushi I've had so far... 10/29/2008

The sushi was so fresh, it melted in my mouth. The waitress was wonderful & very helpful, and her suggestions were on point. Their Cocolate Volcano Lava and Banana Tempura were out-of-this-world-delicious. I have tried my share of Martinies and had not found a Martini I could say I like, but after having their Green Tea Martini, I can now say I have a Martini of preference. It was all worth every penny.\r \r MizZim Cons: The directions given by map quest weren't very helpful. more

Best Sushi I have ever had 6/25/2008

This was the best sushi I have ever had and the service was great as well.\r If you are in the mood for good sushi and are in Boston, do not miss this place! more

Overrated 6/5/2008

Fish on sushi is quite thin. You are certainly paying more for the rent, location and the decor than the food. more

Very Average Sushi 3/25/2008

I live in NYC but travel to Boston every week and since I am a sushi lover, I go to Douzo (I know of no other sushi place near my hotel). I like the ambience but I am afraid the sushi and maki is sooo average. Too much rice on the maki---much more rice than actual fish. To top that, the maki rolls just collapse as soon as one picks them up and dips them in soy sauce. Last night, I ordered some miso cod--which is supposed to me soft and buttery but Douzo's cod was dry and overcooked. I can order better maki and sushi from the small takeaway shop near my apartment at 1/3 of the price. Pros: nice setting Cons: very average sushi and maki more

great restaurnat I love it 11/27/2007

I been going to Douzo since they open the door for business almost 2 years ago, Im huge huge fan of Douzo. great drinks & fresh sushi & great food, excellent service and freindly hostest. 3 hours parking for $5.00, very trendy, for the price you are paying for it, what can we ask for more, ,,,,,except they need more seats for restaurant , Keep up Douzo, Excellent Job more

Unprofessional management, frozen shumai, hair in sushi - appetizing, don't you think? 10/20/2007

I had the most heinous experience at Douzo. And I mean heinous. After waiting an hour (which is fine and normal in Boston), we order and my friend and boyfriend's sushi arrive 40 minutes after we order. Shockingly late, I know. The waitress then informs us that the fish he ordered as well is no longer available. Why was he not informed right after he ordered....instead of 40 minutes later? Clearly a kitchen and communication problem. Then, the manager comes over and insincerely offers free dessert. What he should have offered was a comprable fish on the house. My boyfriend then finds a piece of hair strewn across his sushi - after he has already eaten 2 pieces - yes, disgustingly, he ingested this hair. How does the owner respond? By offering a new plate of sushi. PLEASE. Who can have any appetite after realizing they've ingested hair. The owner is so offended by my boyfriend's refusal for a new plate, that he walks away and never returns to ask ""What can I do to make this better?"" Only after I approach the owner and cajole him into understanding my boyfriend's viewpoint does he begrudgingly agree to comp my boyfriend's meal and take-off a round of drinks. The owner even had the audacity to say he was going to offer a $15 gift certificate, but decided against it because he felt offended by my boyfriend's response. Who would return to this unrefined, ill-managed place to use a $15 gift certificate? And one more thing - as a Chinese-American, I know some Asian food well, and I can tell you that the shumai that you pay $6.50 for, tastes eerily familiar - from the frozen section at the Chinese grocery store familiar. Consider yourself warned - your precious money and time are better spent elsewhere. Cons: see above more

if you're in Boston, this is a MUST-GO 9/30/2007

I am a HUGE fan of douzo, and now I miss it so much after I moved. I used to go there every other week. The food is DELICIOUS. the starters are amazing. The spicy seafood salad is heavenly. The fried shomai too, the othe spicy shrimp something i forgot the name. \r \r As for the rolls, I love the PHOENIX roll you HAVE to try it. the shrimp tempura roll ofcourse, and the volcano, everything is nice there. And the desserts are also amazing. \r \r if you wanna have a great sushi experience, authentic, and a beautiful atmoshphere, it's the place to go. Pros: Delicious food, unique rolls, nice atmosphere. Cons: they close early, and also close midday friday!! more

Great Atmosphere... good sushi 8/26/2007

We went here for the first time and it was tasty. There were some creative rolls, however, it was very pricey. I guess you are paying to eat in Back Bay.I recommend this restaurant for people on dates, rather than for families. I liked their Snow Mt Roll. Pros: Atmosphere, service, fresh ideas Cons: too pricey!, unclean floors more

food was okay, paying for ambiance 7/7/2007

I went to Douzo for the first time last night and it was decent... the food was pretty solid, but certainly nothing to rave about. I've definitely had better at Oishii or even Fugakyu for that matter. That being said, they have great drinks, a nice ambiance and pretty good service. It''s modern and trendy and it's obvious that's what you're paying for. My only caveat: Some of the tables are squished so closely together that you can hear exactly what the people next to you are saying... it's a little uncomfortable and definitely somewhat intrusive when you feel like you have to whisper. Overall though, if you're looking for superior sushi, Douzo is not it, but if decent sushi, in a great location and a nice setting is up your alley then Douzo is the place to go. Pros: nice ambiance Cons: tables are superclose more
