This place is way overhyped. I got some patties that were not fully cooked, and only grilled on one side. I have no idea why this place gets so many reviews. Thumbs down.

Burger Nirvana on N. Lamar in Austin, TX 4/16/2010

Yesterday I treated myself to lunch out. This place is truly a veritable temple to the cow. A cathedral for the carnivore. Dan’s Hamburgers. In a time when Austin’s pretentiousness is peaking, this place is a throwback to a simpler time that was a lot less full of itself. This is not a place that advertises organic foods that are purchased from 3rd world suppliers at 1st world prices. Nothing about billions having been served. No free range, low fat, or any of the other feel good marketing BS that infects other burger places to be found anywhere. What you will find here is an amazing aroma that seduces your soul when you open the door of your car from the parking lot. You’ll also see glimpses of an old iron grill that appears to be from the 40’s or possibly earlier, searing wonderful all angus beef patties. You will also possibly note that this is likely one of the last places in Austin where you can order a burger in English and the person who takes your order does truly speak the language, and wonder of wonders, gives a damn about giving good service. I think we probably waited maybe 3 minutes longer than we would have at our local gigantor burger palace. It was worth it. Old school white paper for the wrapper with grease pencil writing on it that you can actually read says which burger is which. As I’m picking up the order they are pulling the onion rings and fries out of the fryer and bagging it up for me. No heat lamp nonsense! The burger was juicy but well seared on the outside, almost bordering on crispy. The texture of the meat was that of lean ground beef and no fillers, unlike at the chains whose patties just have a different texture that makes you wonder what in the hell the truth is behind the “100% all-American beef” ads. This burger didn’t have a quart of mayo slopped on it like most fast food places. The tomatoes were actually RED, not the anemic pink 3rd picked over garbage the size of a quarter that I’m used to having disgrace my burger. The lettuce was crisp and had been shaken or spun to keep it from being too wet and therefore compromise the structural integrity of the burger. This place is absolutely one of the best. If you have the chance to make it, you will not be disappointed. Pros: Everything (and I don't say that lightly!!) Cons: No location for far north Austin or Cedar Park area... more

Dan's the man... 6/12/2009

Been eatin' hamburgers at Dan's (and yes, I admit... Fran's, too) forever. Now I feel like kids in a divorce having to choose between the two. Happily, I love 'em both! Pros: Best Hamburgers, esp. with jalapenos! Cons: Sometimes the large dbl. meat & cheese bun falls apart... more

Unimpressed... tastier burgers can be found elsewhere... I WISH THERE WAS AN IN-N-OUT HERE! 10/22/2008

I had several locals tell me the history of this burger joint & how great their food is. So my hubby & I tried it today. The place was packed, but service was quick. We got our order hot & fresh... took a bite into it, and wasn't impressed. The burger was definitely better than Mighty Fine's or any other fast food joints out there. \r I still say an IN-N-OUT ""animal-style"" burger is unbeatable. After eating one, you want another! The burgers are packed w/ flavor. Not just some greasy patties dressed w/cheese & bacon. Unfortunately, IN-N-OUT's are only in Cali, AZ, & Vegas. So if you're looking locally... check out P.Terry's on S.Lamar & Barton Springs. The burgers are tasty & the fries are similar to IN-N-OUT's -- a freshly cut potato that's never been frozen. =) more

Good, Not Great. 8/1/2008

Dan's offers a perfectly respectable burger that will satisfy most burger cravings. Not greasy (enough). Burger was served hot, ingredients were fresh and of high quality, and the patty was juicy. Very nice and the service was prompt. Although this burger is not the greatest, it ranks up there and is more memorable that Hut's. Unless you are absolutely craving Dirty Martin's, this place will do. By the way, the shakes are definitely thick. Like the burgers, they are not the best in town, but I would certainly order one again.\r \r The Lamar location is infinitley better than any experience I've had with the one on Manchaca.\r \r Although Dan's can be considered as being truly Austin, it simply lacks the ""Keep Austin Weird"" personality of a place such as Dirty Martin's. Still, Dan's is what it is and although it isn't perfect, I'd hate to see it change. Pros: Everything I've had has been very good. Cons: I'll probably never crave anything from Dan's. more

Looking for cheap eats with tasty burgers? Than Dan is your man... 4/11/2008

Went to this place at lunch time on a Friday. Although packed, some how their system works. Burgers, fries and onion rings were all very good. Prices very cheap. I didn't think the burgers very very greasy at all, compared to Hut's Dan's beats em in taste and Hut's wins as more greasy and much more pricey..\r \r Neg: Poor parking lot, atmosphere (decor is zilch). Pros: Burgers, fries, onion rings Cons: Parking lot, lack of decor more

Beats fast food anyday 11/12/2007

If you are going to get a quck burger and fries, dump McDonald's and come to Dan's. The service is quick, and the food is awesome. I have never had a bad burger here and The fries come out fresh, hot, and delicious. They only accept cash so be prepared before you go, but this is one of my favorite places for a fast meal. Pros: Great Burgers/ Fries Cons: Cash only - be prepared before you go more

yummy yummy burger 6/5/2007

One would think that this kind of food would be bad for your health, but the average age of the clientelle here is about 100 so they must be doing something right. SImply the best burger anywhere. And the breakfast is wonderful as well. Their breakfast tacos have hasbrowns in them which makes them just perfect. The burger is fantastic - something about the way the burger blends with the cheese & the bun all practically melting together .. superb! It's everything a buger should be - yes it's greasy (that means juicy), but who wants an old dried up blackened burger? Not me! The staff is always super-nice as well. But the morning staff does seem a little stressed out sometimes, because it is always SO busy in there for breakfast. A+ Pros: delicious Cons: cholesterol more

Great hamburgers and cheese burgers. Fries and onion rings always hot and fresh. Can't go wrong here. 11/8/2006

You can't beat the quaility and the price anywhere. We take our out of town guests to Dan's when they are looking for a great old fashioned hamburger. They could add something like corn dogs for the little kids to their menu, but really we have no complaints at all. more

BEST HAMBURGER...... EVER !!!! 12/14/2005

Just Moved to Austin 2 months ago. I tried it once after being in town after a week or so and now I am addicted. Hands down the best hamburger I've ever had. The only thing I don't like about Dan's is that it is not in my backyard. Pros: tasty more

Great Burger! 6/6/2005

Simply put...they serve up a wonderful burger and awesome onion rings. Pros: Inexpensive more

all-american food! 5/24/2003

Dan's is as American as a fourth-of-july parade. This is the best place to get a burger, fries, and milkshake meal (don't miss out on the milkshakes!!). It's the perfect ""fast-food"" place--like what McDonalds should be, but isn't. more

Great grease burger 4/3/2003

Great burgers for those days when you ARE NOT counting calories. Reminds me of a great place in Houston. Fries are good and all is served in a funky dining room with funky people. more

Breakfast & Much More! 10/31/2002

Dan's has many different excellent breakfast choices, depending on what you might prefer. Their egg dishes are tasty and for old-fashioned Southerners, they have the best sausage gravy over bisquits available in Austin. Also, their prices are VERY reasonable. Pros: fast & good Cons: noisy more

Dan's is bad 10/26/2002

Dan's Hamburgers are awful. Not much else to say after that. more

A Lifetime of Burgers 10/25/2002

When I was about ten years old, my eldest brother, who was in highschool at the time and familiar with all of the best places to catch a quick bite to eat, suggested to my parents that we go to Dan's Hamburgers. I remember thinking, ""oh gosh, not another greesy hamburger joint."" But to my surprise, Dan's was anything but. Sure it had all of the normal characteristics: a drive through window and three different sizes of hamburgers. But as soon as I had my first Dan's Hamburger, I knew it wouldn't be my last. Between the fresh toasted buns, the burger was juicy, and it tasted as if the meat had been prepared with that little extra something. The french-fries were crisp and light, and the staff friendly and couteous. Fifteen years later, my family gets together every Saturday to have a burger at Dan's Hamburgers! Thanks Dan's! Pros: Inexpensive, Friendy Staff, Breakfast and Lunch! Cons: Parking more

How hamburgers are supposed to taste 10/10/2002

Exactly. This is how a hamburger is supposed to taste. A thin and wide griddle fried slab of grease. If you want more meat then just get a double. Nothing is worse than a giant flame broiled burger where there is no flavor and at Dan's they understand that. The milkshakes are great too. Be warned, it can be tricky at lunch as this establishments popularity sometimes outweighs its seating capabilities. Oh and don't come here for ambience, come here for the food, think of a really old Dairy Queen and that's what the place looks like. Pros: great food, inexpensive Cons: crowded, parking more
