Oh my God, I can't get enough of this 2/16/2012

Oh my God, I can't get enough of this place!! By far one of my most favorite places to eat EVER! I love the relaxed atmosphere, modest setting, unassuming location, and of course the mouth watering cuisine. It is a real gem! The people who own it are so sweet and take real pride in what they do. I have tried at least 5 other Ethiopian food restaurant and there is no comparison. Dalo's is THE BEST. After writing this review I am hankering for some Dalo's.... here i go! more

LOOOOOOVE Dalo's 2/5/2011

There just aren't adequate words to describe the Dalo's experience but I'll try. Wonderful, cheap food, Warm, friendly owners, lovely Ethiopian decor, all around nice atmosphere. My kids and I have gotten a lot of friends hooked on Dalo's. We get the vegan platter, with the spinach, lentils, miser watt?, salad-y stuff & injera. At first I couldn't understand how they could stay in business with such low prices, but luckily for everyone Dalo's is super popular now & deservedly so. more

Good food, quite cheap 7/30/2010

We just picked the buffet (which was what most folks were chosing). It was only $10 and you get 4-5 vegetarian dishes, 2 chicken dishes and 2 beef dishes along with injeras. Everything was in 2 flavors: spicy & non-spicy. The lentils, spinach and cabbage dishes were good, the chicken dish (one serving of the buffet) was good and the other serving was okay. The restaurant is in remote place (it's actually on Williams St, not on Vancouver Ave (as put in the address). Still hard to find. The service can be slow if the places gets crowded (at one moment, the entire buffet had half the buffet not filled). The waiters seem down-to-earth. Since it's in a remote place, you can find a lot of street parking. Pros: Good food buffet, quite cheap Cons: Hard to find (it's on Williams street, next to Vancouver Ave more

Yummy! 10/16/2009

The food is delicious and the staff are super friendly. Several vegan choices and the small vegan combo is only $7- plenty of food for one person so it's a great value. Ambiance isn't great and the wait can be a tad long but I love the food and staff so I forget about all of that once I get my food. The other night I went in and they had an all you can eat buffet which was awesome- instant gratification with 5 vegan choices! I hope they make it a regular thing. Update 1/6/10- the all you can eat buffet is now a regular thing at Dalo's. It's just $10 and a great way to introduce someone to Ethiopian food or to get instant dinner. Pros: wonderful staff, yummy food, inexpensive Cons: ambiance/lighting more

Food was good, but too slowwww! 8/14/2009

Went on Saturday evening at 7pm. The place was about half full. We all ordered tibbs dishes and ordered an appetizer. Received drinks fairly promptly but after 45 minutes no appetizer, and all the people that were there when we arrived still had no food on their tables so we started getting worried. After about an hour one table near us got some food. Finally we got our food I think around the 80 minute mark. The food was good but not great. Definitely not worth the wait. Not coming back. Pros: Food was decent, not great Cons: Very slow to get our meal (bring a novel to read) more

Absolutely AWESOME 5/3/2009

Everything positive said and written about Dalo's is absolutely true. The food is fresh, delicious, adequately spicy and above all CHEAP. You will never find better Ethiopian food in Portland- I've tried. The enjara is so fresh and tasty unlike the other places where it's cursty, cold & very bitter. Do yourself a favor and just go - try to get there before 8pm on friday and saturday - the rest of the week is fine after 8pm (except sunday - they're closed). Go and you wont be sorry. Pros: Everything said by reviewers is TRUE!! Cons: Odd building/Odd location (but not enough to not go) more

DELICIOUS! 5/1/2009

The food is absolutely delicious - the least greasy Ethiopian food I have ever had! Loved the level of spice - great flavors and fresh. My husband picked up take out and said the dining room was a bit rugged. So we would probably only do take out. I can't think of a true con. Give it a try!!! Pros: Affordable, delicious, ample portions Cons: wish it were closer to us more

Inexpensive, delicious, lovely people 3/14/2009

Yum, just delicious ethiopian food, good portions, low, low price and an enjoyable atmosphere. The guys that play jazz there on Friday and Saturday are a lot of fun. If you have yet to try it, you should soon! Pros: Delicious and affordable Cons: It's a bit funky looking from the outside more

Delicious and Cheap 2/23/2009

The most delicious Ethiopian food I have had in Portland. The prices are amazing and I am always stuffed when I leave. They are also incredibly nice. more

Cheapest dinner in a LONG time... 2/17/2009

Hard to find. It does not look like a restaurant on the outside. We found the entrance on Williams, not Vancouver, with a pink awning. Not a place to take someone you want to impress. We dined there last night and it was really weird. Half of the restaurant was well lit with good music (of course that half was full!) and half was so dark you could barely read the menu and the hum of the refrigerator unit behind the tiny bar was way louder than the music in the other room. It was pretty busy. Probably because its so cheap! Service was SLOW. If you are okay with standing up or being very direct to get attention, you'll be okay, but subtle hints like eye contact or a nod does NOT get their attention. The food was pretty good. We shared a small vegetable platter and small chicken tibbs. Some of our veggies weren't hot all the way through and it could have been spicier (we weren't given an option) but it was a good deal of food and we took home leftovers. I had the honey wine (so-so) and he had a Rogue. We got out of there for under $20. I prefer the vegan platter at Queen of Sheba but with the prices Dalo's, I'd say its worth a shot if you aren't real picky. Pros: Super cheap Cons: Cultural gap in the service more

Best Of Portland 11/5/2008

One thing that I love about Portland is the amazing diversity. Dalo's Kitchen is a wonderfully delicious addition to the diversity of Portland. If you're reading this and the other reviews, you can see that pretty much all of us who've eaten at Dalo's rave about it. My best recommendation is - go, try it, and judge for yourself. You wont be disappointed. I hope they stay open forever!! Go Dalo's and thank you for your delicious goodness. Pros: Small but well representative menu- Delicious too ;-d Cons: On really busy nights, the service may be slow, but the atmosphere and music more than make up for it. more

Amazing Restaurant - Must Experience!! 10/20/2008

This place is one of a kind in Portland. There are many other Ethiopian restaurants in Portland but I'll challenge you to find a finer place than Dalo's. Dalo's has the best combination of great food at an amazing value. I'm sorry the previous reviewer had such a bad experience but it clearly doesnt represent the norm at Dalo's. This is a hard working family owned restaurant, where they greet you with a smile and a warm atmosphere. Above all, Dalo's distinguishes itself by the quality of their food!! They have a small menu, but everything is good. You must try the veggie platter (small up to 2 individuals or large for 3 or more) - great for vegans and really filling. If you eat meat, you must have the Kitfo - I dont know what they put in it but it's mouthwatering beef tar-tar (you can have it cooked as you like) that packs a uniquely rich flavor. I can go on and on, but trust me, you will not be disappointed with Dalo's. Pros: Tasty food that wont hurt the wallet Cons: Cant stop eating more

Terrible restaurant... 10/8/2008

Terrible customer service I ever seen before...\r I was so dissapointed them behavior. \r I went there couple of times and everytime they serve food differently or forgot something.\r I never go back this restaurant anymore. more

Simply Delicious***Yum***Yum*** 8/6/2008

I eat out at least 5 days a week, in the Portland area and I just have not been to a place that I enjoy more. Dalo's is, in my estimation, THE BEST VALUE in the Portalnd area. Dont come here expecting to be impressed by the ambiance, you may be disappointed. Come here with an appetite and you'll leave full and wanting more. The food is delicious and DIRT CHEAP! I dont know how they do it, but I'm not complaining. If you're a vegetarian, get the veggie platter which includes Spinach, two types of lentil dishes and a mixed veggie dish. If you're a carnivore like me, get the Kitfo - dont even look at the menu - trust me. Ideal for groups and even cheaper. I read the reviews here and went and I plan on eating at Dalo's at least once a week. Pros: Delicious, unique food at a great price Cons: May be hard to find, but worth the hunt. more

Good food, great value. Must try at least once. 6/22/2008

Have been here a few times. The food alone is worth the trip, but the value is phenomenal. The vegetarian platter is consistently good (and I'm not vegetarian), and is just spicy enough. The injera was great. Top it off with the honey wine, and you've got a nice meal. A nice little relaxed place, albeit hard to find. There has even been live music, but I don't know when it is offered. Pros: Food, value Cons: Odd location more

Wow!! Amazing Food 6/16/2008

Just moved to Portland area and a friend brought me to this place. Truly a gem in Portland. I cant believe you can get food this great at this price! Definitely the best Ethiopian that I've ever had. I'll be there at least once a week - try the Kitfo and the Gomen (spinach) - but save some for me ;-)\r Food = AMAZING!!\r Decor = Tribal/ Ethiopian\r Atmosphere = Cozy/ Social\r Service = Good\r $ = CHEAP!!\r Menu = Simple/ Authentic\r Recommendation = Must Go!\r Pros: Food Cons: Cant Stop Eating more

Best Ethiopian 3/20/2008

I really like this place & I'll keep it simple:\r - Great, quality food\r - Very authentic but not just for connoisseurs\r - Phenomenal value\r - Solid service\r You're really missing something if you dont try this place at least once- there's something for every palate.\r Pros: Great, tasty food Cons: Restaurant is in an unusual location more

Dalo's Or Bust! 1/28/2008

By far the best Ethiopian in Portland!! Don't even bother with the rest, you're seriously wasting your time if you're looking for better quality ethiopian food. I've eaten (I think) at all of the Ethiopian restaurants in Portland and you'll not find a finer Kitfo, Awaze Tibs, Veggie Platter, Injera or any other dish. Dalo's has a small menu but everything is well done. Besides the quality, you cant beat the deal - a group of 4 will be hard pressed to spend more than $36 (and that's including a bottle of the delicious Honey Wine). Cool place to hang out with friends. Enjoy. more

Awesome food! This place is great for groups. For four we shared the veggie combo and zilzil tibbs last night, along with a bottle of honeywine. The food was fresh, our server was friendly and informitive ( beautiful too:) i must add. We entered on the williams side of this bizarre building. But once we found it we were pleased. Pros: yummy food, quick service & seating, homey, lots of decoration to look at, & a DJ! Cons: none to add more

worth the wait ethiopian goodness 1/1/2008

so so good. reminiscent of the dishes i first tried with college friends in San Francisco on lazy sunday... more
