They just don't listen 7/18/2012

I am done with Devachan Salon. I use all of their products. I've been there numerous times. My hairstylist's name was Robert. I have repeatedly told him I do not like the hairstyle that he insists on cutting, especially since he lops off half of my hair! I had finally got my hair to the length that I want and all I asked for was to pull up the top layer to mitigate the "pyramid head" effect. Instead he makes the layers shallower and cuts the hair to half length. He says he didn't want me to have a "Bob" and that "He loves this style on me" Well I don't love this hairstyle and to think that after 4 visits and repeatedly expressing that I want my hair long and I don't want my hair to look like a pumpkin, he would give me a different hairstyle. I have also been there and had a different stylist who equally had no regard for what I was asking and how my hair works. If you get there and you find that you and your stylist inherently agree on how your hair should look, great. Otherwise don't go back a second time. They just don't listen to you. more

Best cut ever! 4/14/2012

I had suffered so many bad haircuts from stylists with no clue about how curly hair looks after it's dried and not worn straight. I can't tell you how many times I ended up looking like Reba McEntire or some other country music star. They would cut it straight, assuming that I wore it that way, I couldn't do anything with it. But no more. I read about Devachan Salon in Allure magazine in 2004 and have been seeing Keith since then. No one else has touched my hair since then. I love the products, too. And I haven't shampod my hair with traditional products since 2004, when I became a Devachan fan. more

Very unhappy from Nadine 5/17/2011

I was looking forward to coming to this salon, thinking that I would finally find a hairdresser who would understand the needs of my curly, sometimes frizzy, thick, but fine hair. I met Maryann, who was very nice and patient. She did not listen to me, however, when I warned her that, if she cut too many layers into my hair, my hair would certainly triangle out and I would look like a clown. She continued to reassure my that this would not happen, and proceeded to cut several short layers above my ears. I walked into the salon with long hair well below my shoulders. Although I had asked her several times, she did not listen. This was 6mos ago. Unfortunately, I have had to wear most of my hair up or back, as I do look like a clown while my hair now forms a triangle. It will probably take another 6mos, a total of one year, before my hair grows to just below my chin line, where it should be for hair like mine. I wish this did not happen, but there is nothing I can do about it now. I just will never return and I hope that I find someone who listens next time. Also, cutting my hair while dry, really made it look fuzzy and it was uneven. Search around for a hairdresser who will listen to you, as you know your hair best. more

hared it 12/5/2010

my appt got mixed up and i was went to Keith, I'm pretty sure that was his name, anyway, didn't listen to anything I said about growing it out and keeping it wavy not super curly, instead of working with how I do my hair he just said do it different, but didn't explain, he just kept randomly cutting pieces. The color i never even had done because the woman seemed so irritated that I was't sure what I wanted that I just said forget it. my hair now has no shape or style and it's even harder to do, I am super unhappy with it AND it was very expensive more

definitely worth the price of admission 6/10/2009

I have short (chin length) curly hair and have worn my hair curly for over 15 years without straightening it. I know my hair, so I wasn't sure that I would learn anything about curls at Devachan, and I was ready to have yet another unimpressive and boring haircut. I am very happy to report that I was pleasantly surprised and sincerely impressed by the Devachan experience. First of all, I got hands down the best cut of my entire life from William, who took under 15 minutes to entirely reshape my hair perfectly for my face, which no one ever knows how to do. Even for a curl expert, the devachan method and advice for washing and styling is really helpful, and despite the extra care they took, doesn't mean more styling time at home. I definitely recommend this salon for anyone who wants a great cut and good curl advice. I am not a beauty person, so the price is more than I would ever pay elsewhere. I'm happy to report that the truly great haircut was worth it! more

change your life cut 6/8/2009

I can't say enough about this place. I always thought I just had thick, shaggy hair with some wave but they cut it and tell you how to take care of it. Granted they sell you their products but for the first time in my life the products made a huge difference (especially the gel). I get stopped by strangers to ask where I get my hair cut. Larry does fabulous color as well. Julie cuts my hair but I think they are all great. Run, don't walk if you have frizzy, unruly hair and walk out with gorgeous ringlets that are so easy to do at home. They teach you to air dry your hair this way! What could be better? more

Smoke and Mirrors- Don't bother 2/18/2009

This salon is all about hype and "style". It is THE MOST IMPRACTICAL haircutting salon experience I have ever had. The good news- They are not scissor happy. The bad news- They don't really cut your hair to suit your face- or your style- or your schedule- They cut you hair to suit your hair. A little snip here, a little snip there- but NO SHAPE. Not like any haircut I ever had. THEN, the application of hair goop and clips to manipulate the curl (WHAT? I have curly hair- cut it correctly and you won't have to manipulate it!). And sit under the hairdryer because it has to air dry. Of course, you can't run your fingers through your hair when it's done, because it is GLUED into place. I honestly felt like I was at an old lady salon from forty years ago... It was curly helmet hair. A year later, I went back to the first person who cut my curly hair into blunt layers- Starting at the crown- the cut took 20 minutes, it air dried by itself in 5 minutes and I walked out with a head full of curls that I could sleep on, wear a hat over and it would spring back- for a very reasonable price. NOT what you get at Devachon- BECAUSE THEY DO NOT KNOW HOW TO CUT CURLY HAIR!!! They only know how to style it. And charge you a fortune in the process. If you have worn your curly hair natural for years like I have, run, do not walk away from this place- They will not understand your lifestyle or your hair. more

The worst cut EVER 11/17/2008

This place is only about hype NOT good cuts. I would not recommend it to anyone. They pretty much insult your intelligence with all the crap they tell you while cutting your hair, two at a time and leave you with pieces and stringers all over the place after you spend $200. Not worth your time or money. I waited 6 months for my hair to grow to get a good cut and now I'll have to wait some more to get a decent cut. They give everybody the EXACT same haircut, no matter what your hair is like. more

I'll go back! 7/11/2007

I had my Devachan cut today, with Judy. She was initially unimpressed with my mop of frizz (it was 90 degrees out and humid today!) but after cutting half of my hair off, things are very different. My scalp massage and conditioning break were heavenly, and, indeed, I have reclaimed my curls. I'll know tomorrow just how good the cut is, after I shower all the products out and style it myself (I don't have a dryer to sit under for 20 minutes, nor do I have 20 minutes...but I do have the products, and have been using them for months now). The experience was pleasant, albeit prety expensive. I don't live in Manhattan so I do get "sticker shock" when I go in for just anout anything. more

Best Curly Cut Ever 5/20/2006

Devachan caters to people who have curly hair. I came here after a lifetime of cutting my thick, unruly hair boy-short because I didn't know how to deal with it, or fighting with it every morning when it grew. I had tried every product imagineable. After Devachan I take the Greyhound from Boston to get my hair cut twice a year and then I roll out of bed not having to do anything, literally. They cut hair dry, so they can observe it in its natural sprung-up habitat - curly hair is longer when wet - and then wash it in their own products. Then they do final styling and snipping. They don't push their products but they do explain them. The hairdressers are interested in educating you about your particular hair, and be forewarned, you will come out of here with curls. A friend of mine was horrified to realize that, after a lifetime of blow drying, she actually had Shirley Temple style ringlets. (She still blow dries, but she uses less drying products, and she comes here twice a year, saying she is more into "gentle waves".) My cuts here are so good that I get out of bed, shake my head and everything falls right into place. It is super conditioned so I no longer fear humidity and rain. I get compliments all the time. And I have an easy routine now that works with, not against my hair. I like Ana and Judy especially but just about everyone here is good. Bring pictures if you have ideas, otherwise they are good at working with your face. Very relaxing environment, not snooty or rushed. Allow two hours for your first appointment and book at least one month in advance - they are very much in demand. And be prepared for an entire salon of curlyheaded stylists; it is surreal. more

Not for this curly girl 5/10/2006

Warning before you book a cut at Devachan: they do the dry cut. And it ain't pretty. I booked at an appointment with Keith after reading reviews of the salon and thinking, "Finally! A place that will understand my hair!" Don't happen. When I sat in Keith's chair, he gave me a consultation and we discussed my routine and my hair type. Then he started cutting it. Wait? No shampoo? No conditioner? No, that would come later. When I came back with a wet head, he moved straight on to styling it. No more cutting, the bits of snipping he'd done in the beginning was it. He proceeded to tell me how my curly hair routine should be every day, which was so complicated and lengthy, there was simply no way. I asked him to face reality and accept I had ten minutes to do my hair in the morning, to which he smiled as if it was the silliest thing he'd ever heard. Ultimately, yes - the salon is very devoted to the Cult of the Curl. Obsessively so, to the point of giving you a curl 'fro, even when it's gentle waves you're going after. I walked out of there looking like a permed poodle, still sporting split ends that I'd hoped would be cut off that day. Instead, I wound up making another appointment, and lots of apologies, to my regular stylist to get a result closer to what I wanted. more

Curl heaven 8/18/2005

This is the place for curly girls and guys to get some respect - and some great hair care. Lorraine Massey, founder of the place and a curly girl herself, has, literally, written the book on how to best care for tresses that don't wanna be straight. She had also produced a line of products designed expressly for those who want to love their locks. Unpretentious and groovy, you'll be delighted with the results from any of the stylists. more
