Don't have expectations 1/2/2006

The drinks here probably are fantastic. I hear that all the time. However, don't go expecting fantastic cuban food. MixTo or something is much more reliable for that. Maybe our disappointment was related to the expectations from all the hype. It wasn't bad, but we had really hoped for a great meal. Maybe if we paired up some silly drinks with the food it would bring out some hidden flavors or something. You probably want to go and try this place, but for the price I wouldn't expect anything out of this world. As I said, try MixTo a few blocks away for a fantastic meal. more

fun... if you can aalsa 9/14/2005

cuba libre is a fun place. the food is good and they have some of the best mixed drinks in town (mohitos, caprioskas). At night, the place turns into a salsa party. they usually have good DJs and a semi decent crowd. However, there is often a line to get into the club by 12midnight. So get their early. Most of the people dancing are amatures, dont feel any pressure to be a star. Upstairs bar is much more chill and a meet market. No tennis shoes! Learned the hard way! more

Cuba comes to 2nd Street 8/30/2005

I'm not sure what's better at this place...the mouth watering mojitos, the dark and comfortable atmosphere, the lively music OR the great food. Weekend evenings are the most lively when dancing commences downstairs at 10:00. My favorite dish is the paella, though they have many traditional Cuban dishes with a bit of a nouveau twist. more

Great mojitos! 8/25/2005

If you're looking for a great, strong rum drink and want to check people out and be seen, this is the place to go! Despite the fact that it's been around for a few years now, Cuba Libre remains a happening hot spot on the weekends. The bar is always packed and the decor is fabulous. The food is also surprisingly good, though I think most of the party seekers on the second floor never even try it. The downstairs provides for a more romantic dinner setting - but make sure you make a reservation in advance. more

Tropical Sunday Brunch 8/15/2005

I went to Cuba Libre in Old City for brunch having been to the place previously at night for drinks and salsa dancing. With the sun-dappled dining room, palm trees, and brightly tiled floor, Cuba Libre looks like a transplant from Havana, not Philadelphia. This was especially evident at brunch with the sun coming in through the skylights. Brunch features imaginative dishes like the stuffed french toast with tropical fruits that I had, the Cuban-style huevos rancheros with sausages and black beans, and a delicious basket of breads (muffins, banana bread, etc) that comes with a churn for make-your-own mango butter. The coffee I had was quite good and frequently refilled but for those who prefer it, the brunch also featured Bloody Marias, Mimosas, Mojitos. The restaurant is run by the same people who own Alma de Cuba in Rittenhouse, a place visited by J. Lo a few years back. The main disadvantage of the brunch is the prices fall in the low teens which struck me, a poor student, as a lot of money for eggs, even really good tropical eggs. I'd love to go back if someone else were paying. more

  • The Scene
This Old City restaurant has a decidedly movie-set/Epcot feel about it. Built to resemble a 1940s village, the two-floored space is weathered and bright, with plenty of tall...
