Top notch! My wife (a chef herself) and I were blown-away by every dish and every aspect of our dining experience here. We will be back again and again. more

Expected and recieved 6/24/2010

I kept hearing that Craft is casual of sorts, and it does have that general sense throughout my dining experience, the only exception being our main waiter who at times acted too formal and stoic to make my party casually comfortable. The food was mostly great, with a combination of FANTASTIC dishes (particularly the braised halibut and butternut risotto) and other average dishes (scallops and ravioli). Yes, the prices are on the higher end, but that's just what you're getting into from the get-go. Overall, do recommend to others, primarily because of the food. Pros: Food Cons: service more

Too good to serve you 6/9/2010

I must say I was expecting more out this place. With all of the accolades and the price, I wanted to be blown away. We were placed in a back corner table, and right next us was another couple. I hate it when the seat tables too close that you can hear each others full conversations. Pros: Duck Cons: cramped table, rude waiter more

Great American Cuisine 5/21/2010

I have found the place I want my final meal to take place at- Craft. It was an unforgettable dining experience. The space is gorgeous-dimly lit, high ceilings. The tables are huge so you may have to lean in to hear your dining companions, but really once the food comes out, there isn't much to talk about. Our waiter was very knowledgeable. We started with a pasta that had duck and was really good. It was a nice portion size for the price. Four our entree we had the short ribs, halibut, and potatoes gratin. The short ribs were hands down the best food of the night and really the best thing I had eaten in a long time. They were supremely flavorful, tender and we could not get enough. The halibut was tasty but it was hard to come close to the short ribs. The potatoes gratin were a nice accompaniment to the meal. For dessert we had chocolate chip bread pudding which was warm and a nice ending to our meal. The manager came over and was extremely pleasant. While it does add up, its perfect for a special occassion. I can't wait to save up and return. Pros: short ribs more

Simple yet delicious cooking 4/22/2010

I have been to Craft Bar right around the corner and I cant wait to try Craft, supposedly the higher end of the Craft Empire. It def impressed me. My girlfriend and I ordered Stinging Nettle Agnoletti, which tastes like spinach dumplings. It is crispy outside and creamy inside. For entree, I got the Monkfish wrapped in Bacon and she ordered their pan-seared scallops. I was very happy with the monkfish; the texture is very similar to lobster and the combination of that and bacon is marriage in heaven. The scallops are tender and flavorful as well. Then we decided to go all out and try the dessert as well. Our waiter recommended their home-made doughnuts. They came in a small bowl and is sufficient for more than 2 people to share. These doughnuts are fluffy and sweet and are paired with chocolate and lemon dips. Overall, the food is amazing and the service is just superb. I think our bill came out to be around $100 with tips. It is a little pricey but definitely tasty. Pros: Delicious and great atmosphere more

Ok Food, Great Dessert 1/24/2010

I love the atmosphere of this place and everyone dresses casual in this classy environment. The downfall is it is kind of expensive for small portions and honestly the ravioli was kind of mushy. BUT the restaurant redeemed itself with its fudge brownie and ice cream dessert. YUM! Pros: Cool atmosphere, great dessert, yummy breadsticks Cons: Soggy ravioli more

One of my favorite steaks 1/22/2010

The staff was professional, but welcoming, friendly, and helpful. The ambiance was lively, but not overwhelming. Outstanding wine list, but it trended towards the expensive side. Pros: Outstanding Steak, Wide Selection, Top Quality Cons: Could easily become pricey more

Strong Execution 11/22/2009

The roasted foie gras was delightful! Smooth as butter, slightly juicy, and melted in my mouth. The Jerusalem artichokes were excellent, crispy on the outside and tender inside. Beef Short rib was fabulous; tender, feel apart easily and caramelized well on top. Pros: food, service, location more

Head Judge Badly in Need of Advice from Top Chefs 2/23/2009

Chef Colicchio would be well served paying some attention to what's going on in his own kitchen before dispensing advice to aspiring chefs. First, despite our reservations three weeks in advance, they tried to stick us in the bar area immediately in front of the entrance. Rolled their eyes when we insisted we wanted a NORMAL table in the dining room. My husband's roasted foie gras was spectacular. My quail was practically still moving it was so rare. I called the waiter over and asked him to have it cooked through, explaining that I am pregnant and cannot eat undercooked meat. The quail came back five minutes later, still undercooked and, this time around, luke warm. Just let go of that one and waited patiently for my main course, the braised short rib. Mediocre at best, but passable. My husband's aged steak? Also bordering on raw. I mean we both normally like our steaks medium rare, but this steak barely had anything resembling a sear on the outside and was completely uncooked in the center. Moreover, the sear looked like the minimal degree of cooking done to the steak was performed in a poorly warmed electric stove--it was pale brown and unattractive. It arrived without a steak knife--in a delusional hope, I guess, that the meat was tender enough to be cut with a bread knife. Well, it wasn't. After a few unsuccessful attempts to flag down the waitress, we finally grabbed a busboy and asked for a steak knife. After some bewildered staring, he sent someone else over to clarify what we wanted. Finally, they set one down next to MY plate. My pommes puree were the consistency of a cream soup--too liquid to be eaten with a fork. The potato gnocchi side came in a pool of almost solidifed butter, was sticky, rather unsavory looking and tasted of garlic and, remotely, of something sweet. Not in the good way.... The trumpet mushrooms were good. The rest--bad! Dont blame the recession for bad business! Fix the restaurant! Pros: Good chocolate chip muffins as parting gift Cons: Food, ambience, service more

Unbelievably good 2/7/2009

Everything was great. The wait staff was very polite, and were patient with our lack of food knowledge. All of the food that we ate was worth the price. The food was all cooked to perfection, and was very tasty. The wait times were all reasonable. Best yet, we got free complimentary muffins on the way out! The check can get pricey, but is absolutely worth the cost. Pros: Great wait staff, great food, good atmosphere Cons: Meals can get pricey more

Nope! 11/29/2008

Tried the Tasting Menu Last Night- 110.00 per person. Started with a Raw Scallop dish that was tossed in Olive Oil that was bad. Didn't eat it. Third course in, we had the Scotish Hen- they sent it out raw. There is a difference between raw and rare. I took one bite and had to put it out into my napking. My girlfriend was revolted by the taste and could not eat from that point forward. We asked to stop the tasting menu dead in the track from there and ordered the Sirloin for Two- unacceptable quality of meat! We drank some delicious wine and the service at the bar was nice and very accomidating to us. Check was over $1000 bucks (mostly on wine) and my girlfriend and I went to bed drunk and with empty stomachs. more

Go somewhere else 9/18/2008

My husband and I were in New York for the weekend and wanted to go someplace special for dinner. We regrettably chose Craft. The overall experience was disappointing with the exception of a couple of bright spots. The hostesses were very nice, the bar was quick, the Bloodless Mary was great and you can be happy sitting at one of Dale's tables. However, the food was mediocre at best, especially considering the ownership. Our Sucrine Salad with pickled egg was completely bland and lacking of taste. The servers tout the dishes as being ""large family-style"", but this is not the case. Our delicious Roasted Cauliflower side was hardly enough for 1 person & the Day Boat Diver Scallops entree provided 3 small/ medium sized scallops. Our sirloin was cooked properly, but seemed to be a less than stellar cut of meat since it was like chewing on an old shoe. The Gratin potatoes were basically a milky liquid mess without any flavor. Throughout the meal we politely commented to our server (Elliott) about our dissatisfactions, to which he would reply ""oh"" or ""ok, well I am sorry to hear that""! He offered nothing to accommodate us. We then advised the manager of our overall disappointment. Her solution was to deduct two $10 drinks from our bill. Again, not what we would expect from such a ?fine? restaurant. We eat regularly at other comparable restaurants and have never come even close to experiencing such disappointment in the food & unwillingness of the staff to make amends. I guess the sole focus there is ambiance, not necessarily food or service. We chose to go somewhere else for dessert deciding against throwing additional money away at Craft. If you are seeking a ""place to be seen"" rather than a place for good food and service, then you should definitely check out Craft. However, I recommend going someplace else if you want to enjoy delicious food and great service. We recommend Veritas instead. Pros: Cool ambience Cons: Food and service more

The Best Restaurant In New York 8/7/2008

Hands down this is the best restaurant in New York. The food is always great. The menu is simple, to the point and delicious. The staff is alwasy welcoming and glad that you are there. Go to this restaurant often and try everything. You will find your favorites, but there is not a single thing that is bad on the menu. To end the meal, though, try the donuts for dessert. You won't be sorry! Pros: Excellent Food Cons: Expensive more

Great food, great service, great night! 7/21/2008

A group of my friends took me out to dinner for my birthday the othr night. I arrived before my group and had a seat at the bar. The hostess and bartender were both very attentive and friendly. We were seated promptly once a few more of the group arrived. They didn't seem bothered that we weren't all there unlike some restaurants that villify you for it. We had a very helpful and patient waitress. The bacon appetizer, magyu, and chef's selection were to die for. I ordered scallops for my entree and was incredibly pleased, another of my friends ordered steak, it was great. Someone ordered the monkfish and while it was good, it was not as phenomenal as the rest of the food. For sides, the gnocchi was great, the mushrooms were wonderful as well. We ordered dessert and they brought my plate out with a candle and happy birthday written in chocolate. All of the deserts were good, especially the banana. Pros: food, service, ambiance Cons: Price more

Left feeling 'crafted' 11/14/2007

This was my second ""Craft"", first was CraftSteak in Vegas, which was forgettable, underwhelming (except for the bill). What i remember about that meal was they had an interesting sort of ice cube in my drink. Putting that aside, i did look forward to Craft NY and went in for the ride. Nice looking place to spend an evening, if the chairs didnt have flexible backs, requiring you to do a sort of pilates-ab crunch when you sit back. the guy at the table behind me was trying to relax too, we became impromptu bookends, leaning against each other's chair-backs to preserve balance. It felt like i was sitting in a 9 dollar Target plastic lawn chair. Then the menu confusion, the staring, trying to form a meal from this strange muddle before us, esoterically named vegetables and all. Perplexed faces. Asked for advice. The waiter: ""It's family style, you share the plates. So, everyone order one thing from each course, they're small plates"". What? we share, but we still order 6 of every course? do we each get one bean, one brussel sprout? The waiter walks away. Comes back, tells us everything is good. now order. whatever you ask about, it is good. Oh, thats very good. That too. We order. we end up with 9 starches (with duplicates), 3 greens, 5 white fishes (with duplicates), a mushroom. every dish is savory except for one, of beets. slab of foie gras for 6 with 1 half of a beet garnish and 3 dots of sauce to share. Big, interesting wine list, we want to order several wines and ask for the sommelier. He/She phones it in via the waiter, who returns the list and points at something, 'it's very good', says the invisible sommelier. The small dishes go cold during the pass-around. The theme seems to be 'salty'. Needed a good waiter to make this concept work for a group, It was unsatisfying, unfocused, not special or fun. My dessert: pumpkin crumble. The pumpkin was undercooked cubes, crunchy. eww. Bill: $1100. The 'craft' here seems to be hype, gimmick, and profit from confusion. Pros: good shellfish, general food quality Cons: overcooked, over-salted vegetables. substandard service. menu concept. more
