You just lost a customer! 7/2/2011

Me and my wife have not been to your restaurant in years after our favorite location closed so we thought we would try here. The redhead with the chest tattoo was rude once we walked in the door. She was complaining about us seating ourselfs as it was busy. We apologized for our forgetting that we had to wait to be seated and she was still belligerent and rude. more

Very Rude Staff Trumps Good Food 3/25/2010

I normally wouldn't take the time to write bad review , but I have to say that the staff at the Elliston Place location are totally rude. I went in the other day and was greeted (well not really) by some young guy in a baseball hat who after I said ""Hello"" said nothing. Literally, nothing--not a ""Hi, how are you?"" or ""Welcome to Calypso, what can I get ya?"". Nothing. Being pregnant and a little picky, I took a few seconds and changed my mind once on what I ordered, but placed my order and said, ""no red onions"". I paid, a woman made my salad, and was simply handed the to-go bag. I asked, is there plasticware?"" She said, ""At the end of the counter"". Again, no ""Have a nice day"", ""Here you go, thank you!"". Nothing. Food smelled great as usual but when I got to my car and opened the container, there were red onions all over the top. So, I got out of my car, went back in and handed it to the guy and said, ""There's red onions on here"". He said nothing (yet again) didn't apologize, just took it from me and handed it to the woman who made it. She says, ""Oh, I didn't know you didn't want red onions"", then muttered to him, ""Did she say no red onions?"" He said nothing. Well of course not, because the young, rude mute didn't tell you and wasn't listening when I placed my very simple order. He, clearly frustrated, remade my salad, handed it to me and sent me on my way again w/o so much as a ""sorry about that""...more of a, ""Get the hell out of here ok? You just wasted an entire salad."" In my opinoin, this genteleman should at LEAST be reprimanded. He has NO customer service skills and is just plain rude. I will never visit that location again. Pros: Good food, fast Cons: Rude, rude staff. more

Awful vegetarian food 10/17/2009

We are vegetarians and were looking for a good place to eat while visiting Nashville and this was very disappointing. There were not that many options to begin with, we ended up ordering the Boca burger with sweet potatoes and rice and the black bean salad. The burger was disgusting, it tasted like it was just boiled in water or microwaved to heat it up, the sweet potatoes were fine, but the rice was crusty and out of a box. The salad consisted of canned beans, boxed rice, tomatoes, lettuce, and stale chips. Nothing was homemade or original. If you are into good food, I would suggest you steer clear of the Calypso Cafe. more

Great place to go 5/21/2008

I have loved this place for years. I always get the Lucayan Salad. It is awesome. It also come with two cornbread muffins that are incredibly good. I also recommend the Black Bean Dip for an appetizer. The one on Elliston is always packed at lunch, but there are several locations throughout the city that you can try. Great restaurant. Pros: Great food Cons: Crowded more

Top cheap eats in Nashville 10/2/2007

VERY quick service (less than 5 minutes for nearly everything). Rotisserie chicken and the salads are must-haves. Less than 10 bucks per person and you walk out full and satisfied. It's not fancy, the parking is limited, and they cram in as many people as possible during lunchtime. But they keep people coming in. Pros: quick service, good value Cons: parking, slightly hectic during lunch time more

Amazing Veggie Dishes! 5/21/2007

I left Nashville about a year ago after spending 4 years there -- and having had many lunches/dinners/snacks at Calypso Cafe. I still miss the black bean dip (so so delicious, and a meal in itself), the Martinique Callaloo, the bean and corn salad, and the sweet potaotes. A delicious, flavorful, healthy, cheap, friendly dining option! Nashville is lucky to have this place! more

Food Posioning 4/30/2007

A couple of friends of mine had raved about this place. I ate here last Sat. w/them, and started to feel ill about an hour or two after eating there. I had the Lucayan Salad....which tasted okay. I have barely eaten in the past few days and I am still feeling the effects of this. Obviously, I would not go back. more

The Aruban Sauce is all I want in life 1/30/2007

Quite possibly gods gift to Nashville. This restaurant is perfection. The food is orignal, the service is great and the prices are so cheap its criminal. The have a line of sauces that you can take home in mass, my favorite is the Aruban sauce, but also try the J erk Sauce. Black Bean Dip is my favorite appitizer. 2 people could eat there for under $15. Even though its a local chain, this location seems to have something special in the staff. If you are going for lunch during the week days, get there early or dont go there hungry, seating is limited and there is always line by 11:30am. Pros: Price, Food, Sauces, EVERYTHING! Cons: seating is limited and its VERY popular lunch place more

Absolutely the best food for the money. 3/5/2006

My husband and I have been going to Calypso about once a week for years. We love the black bean salads, the chicken sandwich, the muffins- just about everything! The service is quick and friendly, the ambience is comfortable, and the price is great. Don't come for a romantic night out, but for any other night, this is the place to go. When I think about my favorite places in Nashville, Calypso is one of them. Pros: Healthy/Fresh, Delicious, Cheap Cons: Noisy, Crowded more

Always disappoints... 8/1/2005

A tiny, tasty wood-grilled chicken breast accompanies a tablespoon of cooked rice and two hard-as-a-brick corn muffins. Why do I go back once a year? Because everyone is wild about the place. Pros: Jerk sauce Cons: Value, Portion size, "corn pucks" more

Yes, yes yes! 8/17/2004

I always get the chicken breast (on a pita) w/the aruban honey lime dressing & it is always great! Don't miss the black beans either, they are awesome! I was not too impressed by the key lime pie (not very key lime & kind of runny) or the corn muffins (too dry). Overall, though this is a great place to get a healthy AND quick dine in or take out meal that is really yummy! While I think it is not really ""cheap"" eats, it makes up for it with the taste & quality of food. I have been to the Elliston place location and the Rivergate location & they are both very consistent! Go there & eat! Pros: Great chicken, Healthy choices, Quick more

networkmaven 8/17/2004

I've eaten at the location in Cool Springs and the location on Thompson Way - both are good. Better servings at the Thompson Way location. Better service at the Cool Springs Location. This is one of the RARE places for dining out where one can obtain a healthy meal - not fried - not salted to death; just good healthy food and spicy is nice. I would recommend Calpyso Cafe to anyone who wants to stay healthy, feeling good and get a good value for their dollar. Pros: Healthy, Pleasant Atmosphere, Helpful Staff more

mediocre flavors 1/13/2003

I didn't find the food very flavorful or fresh. It's not terrible, I just don't think it deserves the 'best takeout' rating. Cons: crowded parking more

Great Food 12/15/2002

I'm a vegetarian and this restaurant catered to my needs. I recommend the black bean dip...it's awesome! more

Nice Chick 11/8/2002

loved the chicken - very nice and moist ... the reddish sauce was different (kinda sweet salsa type).. food was server within a minute! more

NOT like Mama's 10/29/2002

Wonderfully urban ""service with a snarl"" (I once exchanged a total of five words with a waiter during the time I was in the cafe), prompt, great people watching, and excellent food. more

Never A Disappointment! 10/20/2002

The food is always great and the service is super fast and very friendly. Everything I have had there is delicious. Nice healthy food too. more

Carribean Attempt! 10/9/2002

Instead of classifying the cuisine as Carribean, I would opt for such labels as Faux Caribe, or simply, Black Beans and Things. Being a newcomer to Nashville, I wanted to feast on the plethora of dishes from various restaurants... beyond the meat and three. I was ecstatic to know that there was a ""Carribean"" restaurant that, I thought, would have many of my favorites to satisfy my insatiable Carribean cravings, like ""Moors y Cristianos"", Fricaseed Chicken, Ackee and Salt Fish, and Steamed Callaloo with, you guessed it, Salt Fish. To my dismay, the menu fell short. Short of Champagne Cola, the inevitable ""Ting"", and Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee that complement the true flavor and zest of, what is supposed to be, the ultimate Carribean feast. I guess Calypso Cafe serves a purpose in Nashville, an alternative to commercial eateries with only a hint of Carribean flavor, in the restaurant decor. more

crave the salad 9/17/2002

Calypso serves the greatest salad, loaded with chicken, oranges and pecans with a fabulously unique dressing. I've never been impressed by the sides, but I find myself having cravings for this salad. The chicken is good too, and it's cheap! Healthy food, fast service, cheap and tasty - perfect lunch spot! more

step out to the carribean 8/5/2002

very unusual and tasty food, uses a lot of black beans and ""barbecue"" sauce. the sauce seems to be a cross between spicy salsa and barbecue. The service is fast and simple. There are also good and unique homemade desserts, such as mint glaze topped brownie. Pros: inexpensive, healthy more
