Good food, excellent happy hour, friendly staff 7/19/2011

I have always loved this restaurant for the selection of wine and delicious food. They have great happy hour deals too. I had my rehearsal dinner here and all of my guests loved it. It was a beautiful night. more

Good restaurant down and on the way out... 4/10/2011

I'm a Denver native, enjoyed Tante Louise way back, was thrilled with the Cork House when they opened, loved it and became a semi-regular (live in the hills), brought lots of friends … but sadly, last visit was my last time there and I will no longer recommend it. Food went down hill, service was abysmal, we were banished to a corner of the place and seemingly forgotten, one hour for any food to arrive, had to ask for bread (white, store bought), and then had to ask for butter or olive oil (another 10 minutes). salad: cheap, entree: cold, and what happened to ""wine restaurant?"" I would come because of the dynamic wine list, and the chance to sample wines: ""no, we don't do wine flights."" What? Since when? It's a WINE restaurant! Clearly, they've given up, and so have I. more

Best Happy Hour and Patio in Denver 3/27/2010

This place is so great in the summer. They have such a beautiful patio and lots of great specials during the week. Happy hour is awesome, with drink specials and appetizer specials (they make a great extra dirty martini). The cheese flights are really fun and tasty to try and the appetizers are really good. \r \r The only reason for my 4 instead of 5 stars is that I didn't have a very good steak here. However, I will continue to go back for the reasons listed above. Love having it in the neighborhood. Pros: Happy hour, specials, atmosphere, patio more

Great atmosphere 6/4/2009

I had one of my most memorable dining experiences at the Cork House years ago. We slogged our way there during a major thunderstorm/flood and the power went out as soon as we walked through the door. But the staff just lit candles, put together a decadent cheese and pate plate and pulled corks on some serious wines. It was a magical, memorable evening. more

Great neighborhood find 4/21/2009

Great place to enjoy the happy hour specials. Not sure its worth it all the other times. Bathroom was small and food takes a while but is usually worth it. Menu is expansive and the fare is high quality. We'll be back soon! Pros: Happy hour, food, parking if early Cons: Bathrooms, parking if you're late more

Best Wine Spot 1/15/2009

This is hands down my favorite restaurant in Denver. The atmosphere is wonderful whether you are in the mood to eat by one of the fireplaces inside, have brunch on the patio, or have drinks in the bar. This restaurant is extremely cozy, the staff is genuinely friendly and helpful, and the food and wine make the experience complete. Try everything on the happy hour food menu at least once; my favorites are the sweet potato fries, both sets of sliders, the cheese flights, and the spinach artichoke dip. The entrees and salads are also fantastic and reasonably priced. Pros: Parking across the street, happy hour 7 days a week from 3-7 more

The food is just not good 4/27/2008

The Cork House is great if you want a good glass of wine and a cheese flight; but anything beyond that is not good. All the food was over cooked. The muscles were rubbery and the salmon was tastless and so done! The specials were terrible and we finished nothing. Even dessert, which I think can't really be that bad, just add chocolate, was bad tasteless, wanting. \r Don't waste your time or money. Denver has too many really good restaurants to waste a meal here. Pros: Good wine list and cheese choices and the service was great Cons: Any other food items, just bad more

Longest dinner of my life!! 2/28/2008

I was so excited to try the Cork House - the 5280 deal was wonderful and the food sounded great. I was mistaken. While the server was friendly, it took nearly 20 min. to get our wine order (just 2 glasses of wine!) The cheese plate was decent, but nothing extraordinary. The wedge salads were thrown on the plate with boxed croutons and bits of tomato - again, not bad. The wine, cheese and salads took about an hour to be served - when the salad plates were cleared we waited for the entree, and waited and waited and waited. When the steaks arrived another hour later, they were rare - not medium as ordered. After the long wait, we decided not to send them back, just asked for a box and the desert that came with the 5280 meal. Guess what? We waited again - the coffee that was supposed to be with desert was gone and we were still waiting. This is not the place to go if you would like to eat your dinner in less than 3 hours. Pros: nice place, good happy hour wine prices Cons: SLOW!!!!! more

Stay away, stay very far away... 12/20/2007

\r \r Last night a friend and I dropped by the Cork House for dinner. We had no reservations but did not need any and were seated at a lovely table by the fireplace. The ambiance is incredible but that is the last nice thing that I can say about this eatery. We started with a scallop appetizer which sounded lovely. However, it was tough and horrible. The waiter was shocked when we told him. They took it off the bill. We then had the martini salad which was passable. For entrees we had the flatiron steak which came out as ordered but was only tolerable if dipped in the gravy. The potatoes and mushrooms that came with steak were left on plate after tasting. The crab stuffed shrimp was okay but no better than a cheap frozen entree. The shrimp dinner came with lemon rice and prosciutto ham wrapped around dry lettuce. I cannot emphasize dry enough. Both were dry and the ham was rubbery. I cannot complain enough. The service and bar is another horror story. Stay away, stay very far away. Pros: The ambience Cons: Food, Bar, Service more

Greatness 10/9/2007

We had the time of our lives on the patio at the Cork House. We've found our new happy hour spot. We sat on the patio Thursday night for half price bottles of wine. The service was WONDERFUL, they were friendly, could answer our wine questions and made great pairing recommendation for their appetizers. We had the seared tuna (perfect) and a great Australian white that was crisp and complemented the food. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone. Pros: Happy Hour more

Don't Order the Food 9/28/2007

Pretty space, friendly people, nice patio, and miserable food. There's no nice way to put this, but aside from the cheese course, there wasn't a single presentable course served to me or my party on our visit. The seared tuna was of very low quality and extremely stringy. The wedge salads were poorly constructed (and if you can screw up a wedge salad, something is terribly wrong). The salmon entree I was served was of poor quality (fishy smelling), and the presentation was appalling (drizzled with brown sugar and bbq sauce from a bottle). A flatiron steak was served medium rare as ordered, yet was tasteless and chewy. Desserts capped the experience--an icy creme brule', and an assortment of sorbets (one of which tasted of Lysol). I rarely complain about restaurants--let alone publicly, but this was a miserable dining experience. I have a pit in my stomach--both from the food, and the fact that I paid for it. If you go--order a cheese course, and then leave. Pros: The Food is Horrible, Yet You'll Likely Live Through It! Cons: The food is horrible. Truly horrible. Uck. more

way overpriced. incompetent chef? 9/22/2007

I got kind of excited to try this place one night so we stopped in. the cabernet's they had were way way over priced. The food, quite frankly, for the price, was miserable. I was excited to see that i could order a side of seared tuna with my salad. With a little balsamic vinegarette, that would have been delicious, but alas, they had no balsamic vinegarette (um. what?) and instead of tuna they brought me the salad with two large, uncut \r and tough steaks of SALMON. seared. what? im not the kind of guy to send things back, but this time, i really should have. i mean, how was i supposed to cut that? also, you shouldn't sear salmon like that. it makes it even tougher. the raspberry vinegarette they sent me was terrible and sweet. i could hardly touch it.\r very disapointing. I could have gotten sick. I ordered a salmon steak, which was also very over priced. I think it was 19 or 20. My girlfriend had the filet mingnon, which was around 34. What we got was the same quality, if not less, than something we get at lonestar steakhouse, or TGIFridays. My GLAZED salmon, also had what appeared to be KC masterpiece barbeque sauce slathered all over the plate.. why? why? it was not a very good filet anyway. it had clearly been frozen. paying so much, i thought for sure they might have a better hookup. I thought the staff was rather rude as though they work at a four star resturaunt, which they do not. Our waitress however, was very polite and sweet, and attentive. Don't let the corona umbrellas on the patio fool you. This place is not layed back. The music seemed to be the same as the waiting music i get when i have to sit on hold with a Dell Computer tech agent. revolting.. Basically, what you'll get here is chain-resturaunt quality food and service, at four-star price, and a nice view out the window at an east colfax 15 line bus stop.. scary..*sigh* just go to outback steakhouse or something for a better experience with real music, at a fraction of the cost Pros: good wine Cons: terribly over-priced. pretentious environment. more

No more happy hour :( 8/1/2007

We used to love the Cork House for their fabulous happy hours and would go almost every weekend. We were incredibily disappointed to learn that this weekend, they changed their happy hour. Appetizers are now 7 dollars (happy hour price, not normal price) and you can only choose from a list of about 10 wines that are ""only"" 6 dollars. I'm sorry, but 6 dollars is NOT a happy hour value. To top it off, our chips and bread were so stale we left the spinach adn artichoke dip sitting there. \r \r We won't be returning anymore. The new happy hour is pitiful. I guess all good things must come to an end. Pros: Nice patio Cons: Overly priced for poor quality more

good food; great service 7/27/2007

I came here on a Thursday night with a group of nine people. It happened to be raining that day, which the manager said was the reason the restaurant wasn't crowded. We had reservations but could have easily been seated without them. Happy hour is half off wine by the glass, until 7pm I believe. Thursdays are half off all bottles. I had the french onion soup, which was very good. I also had the duck entree, which was good but really pretty average. We split a bunch of desserts--the bananas foster was really delicious, the sushi chocoloate thing was fantastic (very rich-tasting) and the chocolate cake was good (very HUGE portion). The service was probably the best thing about the restaurant. Our waiter was very attentive and a manager also came by our table a couple times to make sure we had everything we needed. All in all, a great experience. Pros: great service; resatuarant is larger than it looks from the outside more

Best Happy Hour 5/5/2007

For Happy Hour this place hits all the marks for me, 1/2 price wine, ten dollar flight of five cheeses (of your choice) with a nice selection of crackers and bread. I hear their Martinis are three dollars and are all top shelf. For those of us not really looking for a scene to be seen and would like to catch up with friends, the location seems central and not too loud. Oh, hay and don't let me for get to mention the Sweet Potato fries - tasty sweet salty deliciousness. Service was really good the last three times I was there and the Manager even stopped by. The parking can be a little bit of a pain, although if you have lived in Capitol Hill you will find a spot. Pros: Happy Hour Prices, Nice Selection of Cheeses, Not Loud Cons: Parking more

Great experience. Don't necessarily believe other reviews 1/14/2007

Read other poor reviews, but wanted to try it anyway. Glad we did! On a frigid night, it wasn't too busy. Service was great. Very perssonable server. Made good recommendations for wine and cheese flight. I read that they were out of several wines in one of the reviews so I queried the waiter what was out of stock. He only knew of one wine. But lo and behold, the one I ordered was out. However, they had a special deal on a wonderful cab, of a good vintage. (And I had a half off wine coupon, that I could apply to it, even though it had a special price.) The menu is not your typical salmon entree, chicken breast entree, and petite fillet entree. The menu included things like chicken potpie, meat loaf, and catfish (although I don't know what type of wines you would pair with these.) The stuffed flounder in parchment was an excellent entree. Only negative was that the red wine was chilled. I asked why, and he explained that the cellar is a real cellar, and on a sub zero night, it gets cold. We nursed the wine for about a half hour and it came to room temperature. That just added to the uniqueness of the restaurant. Definitely would return for the reasonable prices, unusual menu, ambiance, and the wines. Pros: Variety of menu, reasonable prices Cons: Out of first choice wine, cold wine cellar more

Miss Taunte Louise 10/1/2006

We went on a Friday night, and had very friendly (if slow) waitstaff and enjoyed the lovely patio, but that is the extent of the nice things that can be said of the experience. We asked to be moved to the patio because the inside of the restaraunt was as loud as any bar. It seems all of the ambiance of Tante Louise has been washed away by clientele that might have been just as happy at a Bennigan's on Friday night. The food was more in the Bennigan's ball park too. The cheese flights and wines, enjoyed on the patio are worth the trip, but if you are looking for fine dining, do not seek it here. I have never seen a chef ruin lamb the way this one can.... Pros: Romantic patio Cons: Terrible food, so-so wine list more

My Friday evening at The Cork House 8/11/2006

The experience we had at this restaurant still has me boiling. Some of the wait staff is rude, some of it is inept and unprofessional, and most if it is never there when you need it. The waiters I saw all looked to be twenty-somethings who seemed very unhappy to be doing their jobs, and I think they're all in over their heads.\r \r We arrived on Friday evening at around 6:15, and met friends on the deck. It took 20 minutes to get my first glass of wine. I ordered the crab cake/tomato dish, and it was actually quite good. However, the waiter completely forgot about my friend's order of salmon. I had completely finished mine, and when the waiter finally came by, we reminded him that we didn't have all our order. He ran away in a flurry, and brought out the salmon within five minutes. While I can understand not overcooking fish, the inside of the salmon was raw and cold. I know, because I tasted it. The inside of the salmon looked a little like pink petroleum jelly. We sent it back, and it finally came out again, still underdone, but at least edible. What a mess! more
